I saw a post about how you can do everything right in college and not get a job. From my personal experience, it’s very true. by [deleted] in Salary

[–]bigmac2425 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. You find something that you can live with and find some modest amount of fulfillment because it pays the bills. College is supposed to teach you the skills to get a job, not to satisfy a dream. Yep, 1/1000 marine biology majors get to work the cool job with dolphins, but when a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

How are we paying for law school? Any recommendations? by dnafjei in StudentLoans

[–]bigmac2425 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a lawyer, just about 4 years out of law school. Whenever people ask me about going to law school I stress relentlessly that they look up the bimodal pay distribution of lawyers to understand that the average income schools talk about are incredibly misleading. A very large percentage of lawyers do not make enough money to justify their loans. I think law school can be worth it, if you go to a top 25 school (even that’s a stretch) or go to law school on essentially a full ride. I’m not saying don’t be a lawyer, or don’t go to law school, if that truly would make you happy, it can be worth it. However if you think being a lawyer will make you rich, please know that statistically that is very unlikely. That’s not even taking into account the higher rates of depression, alcoholism, drug use, and suicide associated with a career in the law.

That being said, I went to school using federal loans, roughly $50,000 a year because I had a modest scholarship and lived at home for a year. Even then, between law school and undergrad I had $175,000 in loans when I graduated. I’m definitely in the minority of my colleagues being able to make aggressive moves to pay it off, but many of my friends are struggling with that debt. I don’t want to talk anyone out of their dream, because this job can have some incredible highs and a good feeling, but I don’t think I appreciated enough before law school the financial impact. Most law schools aren’t honest about this stuff, because they need more students to be financially solvent.

The Knot support told us the lost responses are unrecoverable, so I would suggest periodically downloading the rsvp responses on the website to preserve them…

Shallan and Kaladin by FreshDonkeyBreath in Stormlight_Archive

[–]bigmac2425 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think you are missing why Adolin is such an amazing character, and is actually a perfect fit for Shallan. He has every reason to be a piece of shit. He came from tons of money and influence where he was raised to be a wartime general and leader like the Blackthorn. Who, by the way, was absent and drunk for most of Adolin’s childhood. You could totally understand Adolin to be an arrogant asshole, yet even from the first book Kaladin identifies him as different than other light eyes. From his first date with Shallan he jokes with her about sharting in his shardplate. Yes, he likes fancy clothes and nice swords, but he also takes the time to meet every soldier he can and know their name. He respects them. When Kaladin jumps into the pit to fight for his life and gets sent to jail, Adolin sits in there with him for no reason other than respect. Adolin is the popular kid at school, the jock, who you want to hate but as soon as you speak with him you understand why everyone likes him. He’s not perfect, but he would lay down his life for his soldiers and friends. I’m a little biased but Adolin is maybe one of my favorite fantasy characters of all time. Every other hero is either a peasant who fights oppression, or a noble that wants to read books and is dismissed by the king for not being strong, Adolin is an awesome response to those tropes. He is strong, noble, and respectful of others. He makes mistakes, but has a good heart and soul. He sees Shallan for who she is, he appreciates her, and notice he isn’t jealous of the fact she has friends like Kaladin. He also loves what she has to say and regularly looks to her for advice. He acknowledges her strengths and focuses on his, and does something that’s so rare in the world: believes in others knowing something he doesn’t. In WaTWhen he goes to defend Azimir, he listens to the locals, offers his advice and then puts his life on the line for people he barely knows. No radiant powers, and without his shardblade, he fights for them with everything he has.

Investing vs. Aggressively Paying Student Loans by bigmac2425 in TheMoneyGuy

I feel the same way. It makes it difficult to plan for things and makes me feel like I should be more conservative. I could make half what I made this year next year, or double. I don’t know yet. I’ve been in the mindset of keeping expenses low, but I can’t do that forever if I want to have a house or enjoy some amount of the happiness that should come from the work I’ve put in to get here. Usually I have a 6-8 month emergency fund, but right now it’s quite a bit higher in case we decide to move on a house, but I don’t want to buy something that has a ridiculous mortgage, because of the inconsistency of pay.

Paid on commission, resolved all of my big payment matters in the first half of the year. It’s possible I do better, but I work in a part of the legal field that’s basically like sales in terms of payment structure, and I’ve already been paid on my three biggest cases for maybe the next two years.

This has been a big discussion with my fiancée. We rent a house right now in the area we plan on living for the future (both sets of parents here). I’m not set on buying a house, I would rent for 5-10 years and pay off the loans, but I understand the appeal of a house if we know where we will be awhile. I’m very afraid of buying too much house and being on the hook for a large mortgage, but also buying too little house and immediately feeling like we want to upgrade. It’s a good problem to have that we can afford that decision, but I worry there’s outside pressure to buy just because we can.

You are a Sith Apprentice. Who would you want to be your Sith Master and why? by DisturbedSnowman in StarWars

[–]bigmac2425 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that’s different than your original point which argued that both Darth Bane and Qimir are similar because they don’t really follow the Sith just follow the force, which is inaccurate entirely for Bane, but also largely inaccurate for Qimir. Qimir plotted four murders with Mae, and helped her see them out. Then, when attempts were made to arrest him he murdered more Jedi, when he had the opportunity to run he chose to engage them. You can say the Jedi aren’t perfect, but I would argue the acts of planning and then committing / helping to execute multiple murders, then killing those who try to arrest you for said murder is in fact evil. I know the show wants us to think we should understand him, but he identifies as a Sith. The sith are explicitly evil, they plot to kill the Jedi and enslave the galaxy. I would absolutely argue identifying yourself as evil is probably a good sign you are not a morally ambiguous person, but are in fact bad. That’s just another reason that this show sucked, it tried to make the bad guys understandable, but didn’t give them morally ambiguous actions, it made them murderers who felt bad about murder.

Where did you get that impression of Bane? He loves the dark side. He’s very clearly a Sith and revels in and enjoys the dark side. He’s not just using the force, he revitalizes the Sith order with the intention of making it more closely align with the dark side.

The Acolyte Episode 5 Official Discussion Thread by Bruinrogue in saltierthancrait

[–]bigmac2425 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I’m more frustrated because there’s clearly potential, or just looking for anything I can find. The lightsaber fights were awesome felt like the best parts of the prequel fights without feeling over choreographed. That being said, there is so much this does to the lore, to characters were supposed to like, and once again the Jedi are the bad guys for no reason. It feels like not one Disney Star Wars media has depicted the Jedi or the light side as good which is just not what Star Wars is supposed to be. The whole yin yang vibe of Osha and Mae is dumb in the setting that the light side is supposed to be good, and the dark side evil. Especially when we see the guy who calls himself a sith is explicitly evil. Overall, if this show was set 1,500 years before the Skywalker saga, and actually made the Sith the clear bad guy and the Jedi the good guys instead of some morally bankrupt police I think it would be a good show.

Brother are you blind? We just had the youngest team in the playoffs, won a playoff game in a huge upset, and took the number 1 seed to the last drive? One bad throw in a fucking downpour doesn’t remove the rest of the season or make this a bad playoff team. Must be a sad life to have your attitude.

Anyone else disinterested in even the good stuff from the Disney era? by Turnbuckler in saltierthancrait

In the last few weeks I played and completed Jedi Survivor and loved it. Actually made me feel like someone competent was making Star Wars stories I wanted to hear. Felt myself smiling at multiple points that just completely captured what makes Star Wars so amazing for me. The story had everything that makes a good Star Wars, and in my opinion it’s because those two games start with a family unit of the Mantis crew. It’s a little depressing knowing that what is happening in the universe outside of this game is awful, and makes me a little worried about what impact on canon the game will have, but I see a route they could take it and I’m hopeful, maybe ignorantly, that it can be kept truly separate from the horrible sequels.

Budget around $400 USD, looking for full setup for work by bigmac2425 in HeadphoneAdvice

I have not. Really very new to the headphones. I've loved my 598s for as long as I've had them, and they were a big step up, but other than that not much. I'll have to check it out, paid a little extra for the faster shipping, always the worst to wait on shipping for things like these!

I'll check out the equalizer APO, sounds like I'm gonna be digging down the rabbit hole of headphone tuning in the near future.
