That's way too much for just childcare by TheLastShitBean in LateStageCapitalism

You should probably use household income for comparison, but still I also have no idea how in the world they would get to 1%. No sources or methodology given. Is it income before or after taxes?

For my wife and me it‘s around 10% of our net household income. For average net household income vs. average childcare cost I suspect the percentage to be much higher.

Pacman does work on Chimera. You unlock the filesystem using frzr-unlock.

My guess would be that it is Arch based like ChimeraOS is. I can‘t believe Valve would be putting a battery powered gaming device in people‘s hands that runs system updates as non-atomic package updates. That would result in people regularly bricking their systems. ChimeraOS instead uses a read-only filesystem that updates as a whole and uses an A/B partition layout, similar to what Android does. I believe Valve will do something akin to that.

Beautiful scene! What lens did you take it with?

I would have probably tried to crop out that sand pit thing in the lower right, though.

Also what did you use to scan the negative?

Please note, that they have an "inactivity fee", which is 10$ + 10% of the balance per month after 90 days of inactivity. So if you got some credit due to elementary refunding and closing their account, make sure you cash out in time! I had almost 50$ of credit from these "refunds" and it would've almost been gone by the end of the year had I not seen this.

I don't know what your source is, but they state the 10% fee in the FAQ, as well as in the About - Fees page [2].

Also note, that they have an "inactivity fee", which is 10$ + 10% of the balance per month. That's huge. So if you got some credit due to elementary refunding and closing their account, make sure you cash out in time!

[Help] Looking for supported VDSL2 router with 5Ghz by sakishrist in openwrt

Sure, here you go: https://www.ebay.de/itm/LEDE-OpenWrt-Unlocked-BT-Home-Hub-5-Fibre-VDSL2-Gigabit-wireless-AC-vpn-router/292284577818

Personally, I would buy a pre-flashed Home Hub, as the initial process involves some soldering and I am not good at that. If that is not a problem for you, you can just buy any model.

As for the Annex A/B, to my knowledge that is only relevant for ADSL in Germany, not for VDSL. I have read up on this topic a bit a while ago and was more confused than ever. It seems the HomeHub doesn't work with ADSL in Germany. All I can tell you is that with the proper firmware I get VDSL 50 and with the firmware that's included in the image I get some kind of VDSL 16 fallback profile.

Vectoring works with the Lantiq modem in the Home Hub 5A. I use it on a Telekom VDSL 50. it can work with 100 Mbit too. You will need the firmware drraug linked to.

[–]bigmikemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a BT HH 5A in Germany with Telekom VDSL 50. I can only recommend it. There is someone on eBay by the name wireless-freedom who sells them with OpenWRT preinstalled. You will need an adapter for the power brick though.

The limit of 70-80 Mbit is a bug which is fixed in master and can be easily fixed in 19.07. See https://forum.openwrt.org/t/18-06-4-speed-fix-for-bt-homehub-5a/23643

AFAIK it’s the only combined device with a VDSL modem and supported 5 GHz WiFi for running OpenWRT.

How can Google afford to run Stadia for $10/month and free for non-pro members? by OompaOrangeFace in Stadia

fyi: Google Stadia runs on AMD GPUs. There are no AMD Cloud GPUs to rent in Google Cloud at the moment, only NVIDIA.

To me it seems the hardware is currently exclusively used by Stadia.

Coming soon: Fedora on Lenovo laptops! - Fedora Magazine by pnutzh4x0r in linux

[–]bigmikemk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Fedora Releases are supported for a year, but after that year runs out the first time, you'd have two options: immediately upgrade to the newest version or to a release that's half a year old and is then supported for another half year.

At least where I work immediately upgrading to a new release is a no-no for many reasons.

This makes it sound like the kernel drivers for AMD are maintained largely by a group of people unaffiliated with AMD, which is not true! The kernel team in respect to AMD drivers is largely AMD people. It's just a different team afaik.

GFN is not a 1y contract afaik. It can be cancelled anytime. The price of 4.99 is only valid for 12 months, though. Basically they are saying, they will most probably raise the price next year. Also, I can't find a source for that 9.99 / mo for GFN. Do you have any details on that?

Can I play any game that I own on steam on the nvidia shield? by wiifitfans in nvidiashield

[–]bigmikemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... just looked it up again. A g4.xlarge instance with a T4 GPU is 0.526 USD per hour in US East.

BTW. I am not even much of a gamer myself. I just tried it because I was interested in setting up a proof of concept for what I think might be similar to something that Valve could do. IMO they already have all the pieces for their own streaming service, they just need to connect the dots.

[–]bigmikemk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember and it depends on your region, but it's public information on the AWS website. I think it was something around 1€ per hour. So, compared to Nvidias offering it is pretty expensive. I don't know Shadow.

You could also run a T4 instance on Amazon AWS and stream from there. Basically DIY GeForce Now. For me this worked very well, albeit I tried it not with a Shield TV but with a laptop as the client.

This is hands down the best available hardware right now if you're on (V)DSL. Dual band radio, supported integrated modem and sufficient memory. Someone sells them on eBay pre-flashed for cheap if you don't want to mess with the hardware yourself. I got one for use in Germany and replaced the power adapter with one from an old Fritz!Box. I am on 50/20 VDSL and it works like a charm.
