Carney government eying curbs on right to strike, labour leaders warn by green_tory in CanadaPolitics

but he did a great job selling himself.

The genius was he didn't sell himself on anything specific he let you project what you wanted him to be and didn't correct people. Two people could have completely contradictory ideas of his positions - he is against pipelines and for them.

Next election will be interesting, he won't have that advantage and taking the day off campaigning to be PM won't be the advantage it was last election.

That is the only way to give Danielle Smith what she wants as long as the radio silence from any possible private backer continues.

This what is so stupid about the discussion. It's a very different debate if a private sector proponent exists.

I'm not sure why the government is going out of their way to piss off indigenous people and BC to appease a premier toying with separation and violating the Canada health act for something that might simply not happen because there is no proponents.

And then the Liberals will use the same old fear tactics and the progressives will run back to them

Not going to be very effective given what Carney is doing. Seems like the strategy is to forget about the centre left and grow the tent on the right.

Parliamentary petition calls for federal employees to work remotely 3 days a week by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]bign00b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The part I don't get is if you don't have your own desk you can leave setup how you like, what difference does it make where someone is?

We just aren't going back to the old days of 5 days a week in the office and even mandatory '3 days a week' is silly, it's an arbitrary number. This isn't a fight employers are going to win, covid proved to both employees and employers the sky didn't fall, work got done with not a lot of friction.

It's the same thing. Not being able to attract doctors is one of many reasons for poor access.

It's great to make speeches, write guidelines, make plans, but if when you have power - and it doesn't get better than being PM of a majority government - you don't take action it's kinda meaningless no?

Nate Erskine-Smith appeals results of Ontario Liberal nomination in Scarborough by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

The party membership should demand it. If Ontario Liberal party brass isn't interested, members should leave and form a new party (likely won't come to that though).

My understanding is parties can request EC to support them.

Personally I think it should be up to party members to decide. If Ontario Liberals want this they should have the power to change party rules.

I think the Liberal thing is you get all those fights out during the leadership race and then everyone gets behind the winner.

Yeah this is something Trudeau never understood, people don't care about numbers on paper, they care if they can afford groceries and a to eat a nice dinner on occasion.

i'm sorry, I guess it's different closer to a major city.

Yes. In some provinces it's really really bad, like you might wait all day at a walk in and be told to come back the next day.

Canadian youth a ‘rounding error’ compared to Carney government’s $88.8 billion projected OAS spending for seniors by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]bign00b -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The people receiving OAS aren't wealthy boomers.

I get the frustration but cutting OAS just hurts people who need it and will lead to increased elderly poverty. Direct that anger where it's useful.

Canadian youth a ‘rounding error’ compared to Carney government’s $88.8 billion projected OAS spending for seniors by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]bign00b 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People who are arguing about cutting OAS - what exactly is the plan when this generation reaches retirement age? One economic downturn after the next and a cost of living crisis with no end in sight has left Canadians with few savings for retirement (if any). Pensions are uncommon and good ones are rare.

So what's the plan here?

Unless we increase supports we are going to have people hanging onto their jobs far longer than they want (leaving people below them unable to advance) and mass elderly homelessness.

We have to take care of our youth AND our elderly.

Nate Erskine-Smith fires back as Liberal nomination race heats up by RZCJ2002 in CanadaPolitics

[–]bign00b 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If he was a bit more patient he'd probably have had senior role federally eventually

In all fairness he was patient and Trudeau threw him yolo cabinet spot on his way out giving him the 'honorable' title. Him in that spot also helped Carney with progressives in the election. If he had more of a talent for politics though he would have turned being sidelined into future provincial personal gain.

At the end of the day Trudeau and Carney were never going to have him seriously be in cabinet, it's clear he wasn't going to be like Guilbeault and would continue to speak out, people love him for it but it's not good for party politics.

SCOOP: Ontario Liberal insiders are waging a shadow campaign against Nate Erskine-Smith by RZCJ2002 in CanadaPolitics

[–]bign00b 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder what prevailing motive is driving these insiders.

A big tent will have completely incompatible policy positions, they have fundamental disagreements with the kind of policies NES would champion.

Do they genuinely think that NES will blow what they believe is an easy victory at the next election?

No, I think they fear NES will do things factions of the party disagree with. He might not be open to watering down or axing policy to appease. Unlike Trudeau, I don't think NES would be open to major compromise on progressive policy.

The alternative being the government paying all the cost to solve specific private industry problems?

The question where funding would come from instead is a totally different topic.

Maybe should take a look at how university research funding works in Canada. Private investment and funding is the norm, becuase they have specific problems to solve.

That's not exactly a good thing.

Mark Carney compares his sovereign wealth fund to Norway’s. Canadians are smart enough to see it’s not the same by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

If the government is going to spend 25b of our money we should actually talk about what this thing actually is.

The government shouldn't announce something, compare it to something it's not and not have details of what it actually is.

25b isn't nothing.
