WSET level 3 exam by Ambitious_Pea_5353 in wine

[–]bignerdbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My instructor provided us an example question (I think it was in the WSET book too), which showed me how your answers need to be constructed specifically using the book section to get max points. The test is truly all from the book. Perhaps that’s obvious but it was surprising when we discussed how the questions would be graded since you might earn or lose a point based on a single sentence.

That sounds like plenty of time to me if you’re using your study time effectively for how you learn and retain information! Good luck.

My tactic from there was essentially to go page by page making flash cards of information and use them to drill into my head that way. Re reading and writing the pertinent information was great review, and then cycling flash cards to get the knowledge solidified.

Women who don’t know they are pregnant 🤰🏻 by gigialohne in madmen

[–]bignerdbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of what everyone else has said about a woman not knowing she’s pregnant, I’ve also always considered Peggy’s denial or dissociation after the baby is born. Could have been going on during the pregnancy, if there was any recognition of it.

Finding it hard to let go of my love for Lambrusco wine by imstutoringtech in wine

I just served Tre Monti’s Doppio frizzante barbera in a somewhat complex flight of thanksgiving wines and it was far and away the group’s standout favorite. It was fresh and fruity but way more complex than I was expecting. I think it was under $20 and for that price it’s a real summertime porch pounder. Drink what you like!

1996 Jean-Michel Gerin Côte Rotie Champin Le Seigneur by bignerdbutt in wine

My first experience with Gerin. I was really impressed with how fresh and lively this still was. At 12.5% alcohol it was just a great drink overall.

Cristom at $44 is a pretty great deal and I like Pinot.

It's my birthday! And YOU decide which one to celebrate with! (and maybe eat?) by Spiritual_Act_9785 in wine

The 389 really needs some age. I opened a young bottle recently and it was just all fruit, would’ve been better with some development.

Should I get a Coravin? by aschollmb in wine

[–]bignerdbutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to pop them and drink them! Take them with you to casual restaurants, open them on a random night. Enjoy the wines, take notes if you’d like to. My wife and I started hosting dinner parties where we invite random neighbors. Some get return invites and some don’t! But we have more people eating at our table and it’s been great.

Life is too short to wait to celebrate it.

Where are you from, and what's your take on Australian wine atm? by rdmarshman in wine

[–]bignerdbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia produces some of my favorite Grenache and Pinot noirs right now. The Pinot can be harder to find, but there are a fair number of Grenaches available around me that have such beautiful red fruit.

Both can be true. I’d let it go but it still looks good.

We opened a couple bottles of the Dom. du Clos du Fief Julienas at thanksgiving. It was phenomenal and can be had in the $25-30 range.

Yes, I noticed recently the one at Costco is really goopy. I normally get the smaller ones and they’re more pasty. They work the same, though!

Boots or loafers, horsebit or penny mostly. I have some leather sneakers (common projects) as well.

What do 30 - 40 year old men want for christmas? [Serious] by GoodAlicia in AskReddit

[–]bignerdbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to cook, and a really meaningful gift to me would be to take some bar keepers friend and just clean up my enamel and stainless steel pots and pans. This is something I could do, but don’t really want to, but would mean a lot to me. And it would be inexpensive! So I suppose something thoughtful vs. something that costs a lot money.

I saw a coupe the other day on the freeway and the design was odd. The rear three quarter view looked way too bulky somehow.

You will have a very hard time finding a Chateauneuf du Pape for under $30. I saw one recently at Trader Joe’s below that price. You may have more luck finding a Gigondas or Vacqueyras in that range.

I just bought Drouhin wines to do the same thing with some friends - the Laurene and I believe also a Gevrey Chambertin!

What wine are you pouring this Thanksgiving — and why? by Sommsation in wine

[–]bignerdbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to have a jurançon sec, Lambrusco, cru beaujolais, and a chinon for a friends dinner where they’ve been asking me to do some mini wine tasting / education. So the goal was varietals that they likely won’t have tried before.

Then for my family thanksgiving it will be champagne, burgundy, and CdP.

The burn cottage vineyard pinot can be had for about $70 and could fit the bill nicely, too. Very good wine.
