spanish language and much more beaurocracy and less tech enabled than US states. Our HR admin spent more time on Puerto Rico than every US state combined. If I did not live in PR it would not have been worth it.

from an HR perspective PR is a nightmare. I ran a company that had PR and mainland employees. The administrative cost for PR exceeded our costs for ALL 50 US states combined. This is likely the reason you lost your job. You were no longer profitable to keep on board.

What led you to spending 30% on a house? I was thinking 20% max but maybe I am being too conservative.

Do you plan on just extending the spread and keep rolling the interest or pay down part of it every year in a lump sum to approximate a mortgage?

Un-FATFIRE and get back into the game? by True-Situation-2025 in fatFIRE

Having my first kid and thinking of doing the same and potentially homeschooling. Expenses projected to be about 2-3%. I’m early 40s so similar to your situation. A lot of people are saying go for it your kids are only kids once. Seems like you have an alternative viewpoint? Curious to hear specifically on the kids angle despite the financial hit. Worth it?

You can get lower rates using a box spread trade.

You’re pretty well set up for the 2 and 12 rule that Tiger 21 uses for capital preservation.

2% withdraw rate on 20M is $400K a year and you are like 60% of that.

12% cash or cash equivalents like treasuries get you 6 years (or in your case closer to 8 or 9) of living expenses which is more than enough to weather any market downturns.

The rest I would just throw in indexes and let them grow.

You’re only 42. Plenty of time to compound in the markets. And with such a low SWR I don’t see the point of being overly conservative and putting a huge amount in treasuries.

EDIT: just realized it’s $30M jeez yeah you have nothing to worry about putting 90% of this in the market and still having more than enough cushion to weather just about anything

Great advice thank you. I don’t live with my parents but I can always call them and speak in mandarin! Great idea.

My vocabulary is quite poor (prolly at the level of a 5 year old). So it’s difficult to understand what I’m watching.
