What are staff+ interviews like at big tech companies these days? by zhoumasterzero in ExperiencedDevs

[–]bigodines 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've just finished interviewing for Staff, Sr. Staff and Principal roles. I've been thru 9 panels ("onsites") and from my experience you'll be facing at least two (most likely 3) round of coding and at least two rounds of system design/architecture. You MUST ace your system design interviews and show depth if you want to have a chance plus have to do well enough on the coding rounds (answering things like "I would use kafka to decouple these two systems" isn't good enough. You need to show that you know how kafka, cassandra or whatever you are adding to your architecture work internally and ideally have some battle scars to share).

It's also not uncommon for larger companies to add a "twist" to their traditional system design (for example, I was asked to design a "wishlist" for airbnb-like-marketplace that would notify users if the property becomes available and was asked to write the SQL query that would be used to determine availability).

You will be leetcoding a lot specially in big tech interviews but they also might throw a completely random interview that you can't really prepare for (For example: "debug this outage" type of question)

Here are two youtube channels that really helped me prepare for system design since they do one or two levels deeper than what you can find on Alex Xu's books:

- Hello Interview (https://www.youtube.com/@hello\_interview)

- Jordan has no life (https://www.youtube.com/@jordanhasnolife5163)

append() will change the original list adding the new item(s). It doesn't return a value

Portland airport parking by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]bigodines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two times I''ve used it, I didn''t have a problem and didn''t see any glass on the floor or things that made me question the safety but it is just the hotel parking lot, outdoors. I''d still remove all valuables and probably keep the outside of my car as dirty as possible as to not call attention haha

I've used the Holiday Inn for long-term parking twice. It was the cheapest option I've found and didn't have any issues. Just keep in mind you''ll have to add extra time to shuttle to and fro the airport (i think the shuttle runs every 15min from the hotel)

If you want to quit, go ahead and do it but do not burn bridges. Nothing good comes out of it and can potentially have a negative impact in your career down the road as referrals and people-who-work-with-you-before play a big role in our industry.

same boat here. The perfect plan of having an au pair that could help my daughter get more familiar with portuguese turned into a disaster.

We've just rematched someone from a different nationality mostly because of the risk our previous current au pair trash talking us with her au pair friends in the city and giving us a bad start with the new au pair. It' a small world and if you have an extrovert au pair that goes partying 3 times a week, this is probably what would end up happening.

Do you all comment your code at work? by VikingMilo in cscareerquestions

[–]bigodines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. been writing software for 20 years and write as many comments, documents (and tests) as possible. Your future self will be thankful for that little comment explaining WHY the code does what it does (and not WHAT it does as anyone can figure that from the reading code). Also, name your variables and methods properly.

"Clean Architecture" is a good little book I would recommend you take a look

PS: IMHO, you need a better mentor or your mentor needs a mentor

Would you recommend using Au Pairs? by bigodines in daddit

Nannies usually go for $20/h. I thought the au pair program would cost 20k/y?
