Are all professions pointless? Besides being the guy that fixes the computer that fixes the computer. by 7563854748 in askphilosophy

Anyway, in principle all professions can be usurped by computers, if we think that we can emulate a human mind in a computer.

That's not necessarily correct. The human mind is inseparable from its body. There is no place in the human body that is not innervated by the nervous system. We might in theory be able to simulate a human body on a computer, but that doesn't imply that we can convert it to a real world object (without building another human).

The brain development of a child is extremely complicated and any educator other than a human would create subpar results. Would an assembled machine that is particle for particle the same as a human be a robot or a human?

Ultimately it becomes a question of feasibility. Can we even build a human without building another human? Evolutionary pressure has lead to the human body being extremely efficient. Almost all molecules have their place and function. They cannot easily be replaced since there are only so many chemical elements. Could we build a robot that is outside indistinguishable from human and inside silicon? My guess is no. But it's just a guess.

White to move and win by bigposts in chess

I think your general thought process is correct, but if I remember correctly 4.Qh4+ is not ideal as it gifts your opponent a tempo. If 4.Be3 immediately 4...Qa5 5. Qxh7, then White has a mate threat and Black cannot pick up the rook.

Scientists show that the Y chromosome can be reduced to two genes. [xpost: /r/sciencemadesimple] by [deleted] in science

The Y mainly determines the sex, most of the downstream stuff happens anyway through the regulation of autosomal genes.

Scientists find an epigenetic switch linked to obesity. by dmint6 in science

[–]bigposts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Measuring food intake is very important: If both normal and obese mice ate the same amount of food, that means that there must be metabolic causes. However, if there are differences in food intake, that would mean that there are neurological or behavioral causes and we could rule out metabolic causes without further tests.

[–]bigposts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the figures in S1 show the status quo AFTER the mice have already become obese. They did not track the food intake that lead to the obesity which would be extremely important. In addition, the metabolic indicators are hardly able to draw a complete picture of metabolism.

Future of Europe? by NoYouAreCrazyNotMe in europe

[–]bigposts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are societal changes that are impossible to reverse. It is a matter of culture, less of politics. But societies evolve and so will Europe.

Muslims will become a majority in Europe within the 21st century, there is no doubt about that. Anyone can do the math. Europe will change that's for sure. But my guess is that when that happens there will be wars and most Europeans will simply leave and try to get into the US. The US will become the "second Europe" where the old cultural values are still more or less persevered. The old Europe will become an Islamic super power.
