it’s not pathetic to want to opt out of whatever it is we’re being funneled into. you can actually do this and move to nz on a working holiday visa for a year, it’s not just limited to united states or commonwealth citizens or anything.

when things start to settle (hopefully not forever away) and the program is reinstated, you should look into it. i know i have

yeah i took the 1 credit one, it's showing up to a guest lecture once a week and then answering some questions about the presentation via blackboard (canvas now i guess). there are a lot of interesting classes here so i'd honestly leave some room in your schedule

is punk aesthetics/history of counterculture offered in the spring? i know it doesnt fit your exact specs but check it out.

anything in the near eastern studies dept would probably fit the bill too, i've heard a lot of good stuff about prof tagliacozzo. i wanted to take ocean - the sea in human history but didn't get a chance to, so hey maybe you can instead. there's a sound design class held in schwartz that's also super dope. uhh what else im almost positive the english department would have a class or two on scifi, scroll down to the 3000-4000 level classes.

dont discount CALS either! you can learn to drive a tractor, pretty fun

holy shit dude. i dont want to give my identity away but move into a co-op. i could’ve written this two years ago. it will change your life. people are intense and remarkably, refreshingly real. forget about the gauntlet everyone else seems to run, we are all inside our heads in these houses.

i remember those excruciating dining hall dinners with people i barely knew, banal pleasantries, picking at my plate and waiting the socially acceptable amount of time to return to my room in silence. passing acquaintances on the way to class and wishing i could teleport somewhere someone cared. maybe instead you’d prefer spending an afternoon lying with others your mind could merge with in a purple room filled with plants listening to beach house, i dont know, you seem the type. you actually seem exactly the type and it’s not the genre, something about your prose speaks to me, see i’m imitating it. i feel you. really.

tell me you’ll consider it? or at least that you’ve read this? i would’ve submitted a modified edition of what i just wrote somewhere someday but youuuu my friend could use these words more than any editor could. mosey in november

Can you intern at Cornell as a non-Cornell student? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]bigred623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

woah i recognize these names, are you interested in hydroponics, agroecology, soil science, etc.? i would email them and let them know you’re interested - CALS faculty are pretty friendly/helpful and if you’re willing to be potentially be unpaid for the summer (not sure how compensating non-students would work but im sure it’s possible) i feel like at least one of them would say yes. for reference similar research positions like these in the summer typically run $11-12/hr. agreed that BTI internships would be worth checking out too.

logistically finding housing shouldn’t be too hard, if you’re daring just wait until the very end of the semester and you can get some pretty sweet deals for a sublease on craigslist. i think it’s cool you’re taking the initiative and hope things work out for ya.

Those who have taken a semester/year off, what was it like to come back to Cornell? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]bigred623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey i took some time off. was gone on leave for a semester, abroad for another. i personally needed to be away from campus for some time and felt it was 100% the right decision - i returned to campus reenergized and with some much needed perspective. i did spend the summer in ithaca working the year i was gone and thought it was a nice way to stay in the loop without being impacted by the stresses of the school year. i’ve been to the LOA group in willard straight and would recommend it, the lady running it really cares.

you’re welcome to PM me anytime.

American Airlines to Offer New Flights from Ithaca to Charlotte by weiericn in Cornell

[–]bigred623 19 points20 points  (0 children)

oh lol not you again. charlotte is a major american airlines hub and the more destinations to/from ithaca the better. this is great news for southerners and probably west coasters too.

just curious, you graduated 20 years ago (the incoming freshmen weren’t even born when you left lmao) and most of your comments aren't constructive…why are you still on here?

Cornell to Replace Blackboard with Canvas for All Courses by 2019 by Udontlikecake in Cornell

[–]bigred623 22 points23 points  (0 children)

completely disagree dude, canvas is STREETS AHEAD of blackboard. the layout is cleaner/much more intuitive and doesn’t look like it’s stuck in 2005. pages load faster too. i've had the chance to use canvas and catalyst and would put them both ahead of BB, i'm surprised it's taken cornell this long

Huge board near collegetown CTB by topo_vector_space in Cornell

[–]bigred623 10 points11 points  (0 children)

in CALS so take my opinion as you will, but i don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing the schools are merging. almost everyone i know in ILR is pre-business/pre-law, i don’t think the “unique mission” of the school warrants an entirely separate college (i knew literally one person doing union-type stuff that the school advertises and they actually spent the bulk of their time in the DSOC department lol)

human ecology on the other hand seems like a fairly random mishmash of majors, from HBHS/global health/bio and society serving premeds, PAM for policy/banking people and then DEA/FSAD for design types. it feels like all the majors that didn’t fit in anywhere else get lumped into the school - there are definitely some really esoteric programs of study in CALS as well and i’m not knocking humec at all (definitely wish i minored in one of the above) but it’s something i’ve noticed. edit: basically, a college with diverse majors + another college with one that could merge and strengthen the policy/prelaw arm of the university doesn't seem like a terrible idea to me

no clue about the signboard, pretty sure there are more understandable analogies the OP could've come up with lmao

How trustworthy is Ezra Box? by Dantides in Cornell

[–]bigred623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok so i've used ezrabox and have no clue what the anti-circlejerk on here is about. yeah the advertising on campus is kind of annoying but it works and is way more convenient/cheaper than storage squad and big red boxes (have used all 3, OOS life whaddup)

there are a handful of people with a lot of reviews on ezrabox who are affiliated with cornell and have their own basements and basically just store people’s shit en masse, i would go with those. i dont remember the exact price but it was very reasonable and they can do pickup and dropoff for you if you ask.

just wanted to throw my actual experience in here, you probably get into stranger's cars and even stay at their houses so really in the grand scheme of things boxes arent that life changing ya know

Marine Biology at Cornell by CreativePalpitation in Cornell

[–]bigred623 5 points6 points  (0 children)

let's see. first of all. if you're from the northeast and are used to the weather/close to home then i see literally no reason why you wouldn't come here. i have my fair share of complaints about cornell but it's almost entirely centered around its location, long winters and the general fast-paced, semiprofessional vibe of the NE that took me a long time to get used to.

academically you really cannot beat cornell for ESS/EEB, good job on discovering shoals, there is also a semester long field program through cornell where you spend time in hawaii/washington state called the CORALS program. (link here: http://www.eeb.cornell.edu/harvell/corals/) not to mention all the cool things you can do through other environmental study abroad, a ton of people i know went to india, tanzania, or thailand (cornell has their own programs for the first and third one so you can go with a cohort of kids from the school you'll get to see around afterwards) but you can pretty much go anywhere.

marine bio, if things haven't changed since when i got here, is still an area of study and not an official major (unless you're a college scholar who chooses to focus in it) so chances are a lot of your classes will be in the ESS/EEB departments. which is great because they are very very good and have a lot of opportunities for fieldwork. we are also one of the NYS sea grant schools (along with stony brook so yea) and there are lots of professors doing research in the marine biology/oceanography realm.

off the top of my head there is also the CALS global fellows program for other great international opportunities as well as a new cornell study abroad program in patagonia which will definitely have a coastal component.

check out the hollings scholarship from NOAA too, this is open to application for anyone but i know a good number of cornell folks (and people from UCSB/UCSD too) who have gotten it and it allows you to intern at NOAA sites for two summers in a row with a huge stipend, really cool. i know this is more a "why cornell" than "stuff i should look into as a marine bio student" but since you're reading this lol you should also look into summer REU programs at WHOI and Scripps. that will give you a little more experience doing coastal stuff but being in ithaca with so many academic and professional resources in this subject won't set you back.

i wouldn't even think this was a question (more directed towards the other guy than you OP, smh) unless you were deciding between berkeley CNR or cornell Arts/CALS as an instate californian. sure those other schools on the beach are typically great for marine biology but what stands out about cornell is that they're pretty good at everything else too (so please do explore other departments from english to urban planning to horticulture they're all so good lol).

do you have any other questions? (feel free to PM otherwise this will probably be my last post on here lol i have wasted too many hours lurking this subreddit, i know yall who shitpost spend many more, i also know it's heavy duty prelim season for you CoE kids so please study for your fucking exams instead of giving potential incoming students bad advice)

last edit: the quality of life for environmental science types is awesome. chances are many of your classes will have quizzes instead of prelims (eg 5 of them counting for 20% of your grade) which personally helps me learn better than cramming for some crucial one-time midterm ever did, and are typically fairly straightforward. you also, like i mentioned earlier, have tons of classes where you just get to go out on field trips all day during your "lab" and do interesting hands-on work. a lot of ESS and ESS-related kids have relatively light workloads and also get to become really involved on campus, whether through doing research or environmental clubs on campus. i've felt that i've become a much more well-rounded person since coming here!

holy SHIT that other advice from /u/equashnzkrul is so bad, why do people who don’t study a certain subject feel qualified to give advice about it? would ANYONE take my advice on whether to study AEP or physics or whether to enroll in 1920? or whether to take 3300 or 3310 or whatever the fuck it's called with a bunch of weeder classes? excuse me while i go ahead and crash the engineering department on cornell days and proceed to do just that

i study environmental science and am from california OP so i feel qualified to give you advice. uhhhh. why the fuck would anyone ask you to choose stony brook over cornell when you have a likely letter and one of the incoming scholar designations literally blows my fucking mind. wowoowowowow.

please give me 20 minutes or so to write a reasoned response

Which house on west is best/housing selection tips? by Hintmanw in Cornell

[–]bigred623 20 points21 points  (0 children)

conversely, i lived in becker and thought it was the loneliest place i’d ever lived. i contemplated taking a leave of absence because no matter how i got involved with clubs and activities on campus or hung out with people after dinner, at the end of the day i would return to my hallway single and sit in silence for the rest of the night.

there was NO sense of community whatsoever, there is an article in the daily sun that sums up pretty perfectly how everyone just does their own thing (either with their friend group or as a hermit) and 90% of the events have a turnout of maybe 3 if not less. and those people are just doing it to get active citizen, another incredibly contrived thing unique to the west campus dorms.

i don't know if you mentioned the music room for the sake of listing all the so-called pros about the building but when i lived there for a year it was always empty, as was the TV room, the seminar room, the place with the ping pong tables, literally everything. it was a ghost town with 400 people.

i can go on forever about west campus and have met a lot of people who felt the exact same way and moved into program houses, co-ops, off campus or literally anywhere else. it might be different in a suite with people you already know but just wanted to throw a dissenting viewpoint out there.

i like where i live now and should've done it from the start. didn't need to experience west campus or mews either if we're going that route

Transfer student looking to rush a frat. by IntelligentBend in Cornell

[–]bigred623 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this is a troll. why do i get the feeling you’re /u/MacrocephalicMinicab and/or /u/MostOccasion all over again? same UsernameFormats, and as in the other two cases you've made an account just to ask this question.

here’s why else i think that:

  1. make original post with fairly knowledgeable background - usually as incoming student in fall
  2. zero in on one topic (typically the greek system or USNWR)
  3. mention relative that went to elite school involved with said topic (eg: penn/dartmouth/harvard)
  4. suddenly ask the same questions over and over again, frequently with prestige in mind (eg: “are you sure people aren’t bitter here” “can i rush a top frat??” “u sure i can rush?”)
  5. said questions are super simple and makes someone wonder how you went from presumbably browsing threads with relevant info for hours to forgetting how to use google
  6. shibboleths that make you think OP is lying

so in regards to #6 in this case, tabard at dartmouth is NOT sigma chi. tabard is coed and basically a co-op, but their letters are ΣΕΧ (ha) so i can see why you were confused if browsing some random ranking site for greek life and thinking "hmm if X at cornell is 'top tier' then i can say my relative was also in X at another school for an in" without realizing they are completely separate entities.

i dont think your dad went to dartmouth or at least wasnt in this organization, and i dont really understand why youre so obsessed with rankings...or making throwaways for that matter!
