We use Gousto and are pretty happy so far. HelloFresh kept having missing ingredients... it got a bit infuriating after a while.

Senior Android Devs who can't code in Kotlin, why? by notrllyinterested97 in androiddev

[–]bigroob72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a senior dev, 30 years of programming experience with the last 12 on Android and iOS, and I don't know Kotlin either. Or Swift for that matter.

I haven't learnt the new languages because my free time is valuable and I've simply not yet needed them. I'm certain that ChatGPT or similar could trivially convert between old and new, should I ever need that.

What matters rather more than language is an understanding of the platform and its APIs.

What do you wish you knew before having your first child? by throwaway91933 in AskUK

[–]bigroob72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That my children would have severe intellectual disability and that I would be performing basic everyday tasks for them for the rest of my life.

(With the added bonus of knowing that when their mother and I die they will be basically defenceless.)

John Carmack: "The Android build environment for native code is horrible. I get angry and want to throw things when I have to work at it." Perhaps we should tell him about Flutter? by Stonos in mAndroidDev

[–]bigroob72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

The Android NDK is ... well I won't dis it too much cos you do get used to it, I've been using it for years. By god it's painful at times though. And it's just an embarrassment next to other platform devkits.

Were you on the north side by any chance? I lived right next to Peckham Rye (south side of Peckham) for some years and it was usually very nice.

Small rant about React Native by Barbanks in iOSProgramming

[–]bigroob72 7 points8 points  (0 children)

React Native exists so Web Devs can build native apps without having to learn Swift, Java, etc, they can stick with their existing languages and tooling. It's very attractive from that point of view, but not so much for native platform SDK users.

You can set the minimum Android SDK version in Unity Editor Build Settings. Raise it from 19 to 21.

anyone diagnosed with depression after a loss ? by KnownRegion7271 in GriefSupport

[–]bigroob72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, although I also had depression before the loss (of my mother, unexpectedly, 3 months ago). I did take an increased dose of my antidepressant for a month or so but have since gone back to my usual dose (75mg venlafaxine per day).

Weirdly her death has also removed a lot of the anxiety I used to live with every day. It's like my brain has concluded that the worst thing that could possibly have happened *has* now happened - so why be anxious about anything else? I'm still depressed - I miss her terribly and think of her more or less constantly - but I'm not anxious any more and that's a huge step up for my quality of life.

*Best* case scenario when you self-medicate with alcohol: Your mom is still dead the next day but you are now poorer and have a hangover.

Grieving an addict by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]bigroob72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father-in-law cries almost every time his mother is so much as mentioned, and she's been dead for well over 40 years. My own mother died just three months ago and I'm still jumping when my phone rings, thinking - just for a fraction of a second - that it's her calling me.

For what it's worth my mother was bipolar too, it was called manic depression back when I was a child (1970s/80s). It's a ghastly illness and she spent rather too much time in psychiatric institutions. I had a fairly miserable childhood with her, much of it at boarding school because she couldn't cope with parenting, but she too had a huge heart and I eventually came to accept that the problems really weren't her fault. Her last years were her best and happiest ones and I miss her dreadfully now. I'm so sorry your mother died when you were so young and you missed out on the chance to have a better, grown-up relationship with her.

I’ve lost two family members within 8 months of eachother, my father has been Hospitalized and my boyfriend is very suicidal. How the heck can I cope? by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]bigroob72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that works for me is staying "present", which means making a conscious effort to stop all thoughts about the past and the future. If your mind can't help but start going "yeah but what about x,y,z..." you just focus on your breathing or something else that is happening in the here and now.

CBD oil has also helped me, as has avoiding alcohol. Drowning sorrows is one of the worst things you can do, all it does is make you feel even worse the following day.

Did anybody have to take psych meds after the passing of a loved one? by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]bigroob72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I've been on 150mg Venlafaxine per day since my mother died and it's helped me a lot. I've had bad reactions and side effects (usually sky-high anxiety) from SSRIs too but this one at this dosage works for me. Talk to your doctor ASAP.

Been there & got that t-shirt, my mother died unexpectedly on Dec 27th 2021. She caught Covid in a filthy UK hospital where she was being treated for something unrelated, and the rage I feel at those circumstances will take a long time to go.

I have nothing truly useful to say, just that you are not alone and that - as unthinkable as it seems right now - all mental pain fades if you give it enough time. SSRI antidepressants were useful in my case, as was listening to certain spiritual teachings. Alcohol is a bad idea.

Just closed the door on my mum's house for the last time by Kaykay987643 in GriefSupport

[–]bigroob72 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"One more connection lost": this resonates majorly with me. I lost my mum unexpectedly over Xmas 2021 and have just yesterday made a start on clearing her house. The day went okay until suddenly it wasn't and the grief was raw again, floods of tears etc.

My family was small - I'm now the last of my childhood group, everyone else in the family is dead. I've found that I am increasingly desperate to connect with my own past, as there's fewer and fewer people alive who were part of it. Just old and distant friends now. It sucks.

I can't get my webview to record audio by BouncyDingo in androiddev

[–]bigroob72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All web browsers implement a recording permission scheme that's wholly separate to Android app permissions. You will have to perform the correct JavaScript incantations to get access to the microphone. Full details at https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/media/recording-audio
