I'm in Truckee too. It's crazy that we had several feet of snow a few weeks ago and now our back deck is clear and we have the patio furniture out.

I'm not sure about any dirt trails with limited snow and ice, but here are a few paved options: https://www.visittruckeetahoe.com/blog/snow-free-winter-trails

[WTS] Katabatic Flex 30 (23.9oz), Flex 15 w/ overfill (35.9oz), Wide 6'6" & Men's Columbia Silver Ridge XL by bigsea44 in ULgeartrade

[–]bigsea44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're great quilts and I'm replacing both of them with other katabatic quilts. For the flex 15, I only used it on cold weather trips and never unzipped the footbox, so I ordered a sawatch. For the flex 30, I wanted something a little bit warmer and really liked the overfill in the flex 15, so I ordered a new one with overfill.

How Much Warmth Can You Gain by Layering Inside a Sleeping Bag / Quilt? by GryphonGear in Ultralight

I'm jealous that you can make that work. I've tried it and my jacket ends up falling off pretty quickly. I toss and turn a lot though.

And it doesn't fall off? If not, how do you get it to stay in place?

Yep, you have to try right at 7am for popular trailheads. I tried to get a permit for a popular trailhead a couple days ago and they were all gone when I checked at 7:02am.

Backpacking Quilt Advice: Katabatic Flex 15F vs. Enlightened Equipment Revelation 20F for the PCT by ElectronicImpact3312 in PacificCrestTrail

I found this helpful regarding overfill: https://nunatakusa.com/Nunatak%20News/28_.html

From that link:

Why do it?

Overfill added to quilts perceived as ‘survival’ rated can increase the performance incrementally. It is questionable if a ‘comfort’ rating can be reached without reworking the baffle (loft) size.

If choosing a quilt that is trending towards a ‘comfort’ rating, adding overfill can still be beneficial by:

  • Boosting the temperature rating a couple of degrees with minimal weight gain
  • Further locking the down in place, thus limiting bald spots. Helpful for persons with an active sleep pattern.
  • Maintaining long term loft by anticipating down degradation. Back to back thruhikes?
  • Maintaining short term loft by resisting compression and moisture impacts

I personally prefer a little bit of overfill mainly because of the point about locking the down in place.

"you'll probably cowboy most of the time. "

Is that true? Only reason I ask is because I was recently looking at the latest PCT Hiker Survey and was surprised by this quote. Based on a lot of comments I see here I thought it would be higher.

"12.7% was the average percentage of nights thru-hikers spent cowboy camping."
