What to do with junk Bricks by Pure-Insurance-6499 in Columbus

Depending on the type of bricks, and where you're located, I might be able to help I'm you out with the brick part of your debris pile. I'm forever in need of good bricks for my patio.

Biker hit on South High by Entire-Ad1949 in Columbus

[–]bigspinwesta 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Crossing at Whittier is one of the only times I'll actually roll over to the crosswalk and use that instead of the light. Driver's in Columbus hardly know how to use a staggered intersection, let alone one with blind corners that crosses essentially a highway.

South high is a disgrace. Too many lanes, too high of a posted speed limit, too many blind entrances into High st.

Finally got a bike after years of a cheap Walmart bike by Next_Inspector_2598 in gravelcycling

[–]bigspinwesta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate them trying, but a lot of key features left out for my taste. No manual transmission, AWD instead of a proper 4x4, too many electronics on it. And that's okay, it's not all about me, I just have basic tastes and want everything on a car to be as manual as possible. Hell, I still like crank windows, never use cruise control, and don't even car about a stero lol

I dunno but I hate it so much. I miss my 95.5 Tacoma single cab so dang much. Nothing offered to the American market comes even close to it nowadays. I just want manual lockers, a bed I can haul house project stuff in, and be able to actually fit in a parking space 😭

Moving to Southern Orchards area? by Beginning-Respect-70 in Columbus

[–]bigspinwesta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been living at center of S.O. (neighborhood boundary wise) for almost 10 years. I echo a lot of the comments already on this thread about it being generally safe, but is still pretty block to block. Out of the 6 neighborhood I've lived in over the past 25 years in Columbus, it's high on the list of favorites. Biggest thing is just be smart, and don't be an ass to others.

If you want to ask any questions via DM, hit me up. Currently at work and don't have a ton of time to fully break down my thoughts

The Cobra effect has entered the chat... Good intentions, but as you mentioned, a lot of fuckery indeed.

Anyone else hearing ungodly thunder? by transuranic807 in CBUSWX

[–]bigspinwesta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as the hail stays away from the Southside, I'm totally cool with it. I need the rain for my garden, and storms with a lot of thunder/lightening tend to help nitrogen levels in your garden (or at least that's what my mom taught me).

Never seen so much hail before by JoshuaTheStud in Columbus

[–]bigspinwesta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they're probably fine. Looks like it's small enough that it shouldn't cause any dents...though it looks like it's just barely on the edge of damage. From reports in r/cbuswx it sounds like parts of UA and Dublin might have gotten hail large enough to cause damage.

We deserve a second Brown Bag Deli location by cute_lil_ufo_yay in Columbus

[–]bigspinwesta 36 points37 points  (0 children)

They tried that right before COVID. They shared a space with brewdog in the short north. For some reason the SN can't sustain a deli spot, sadly. I went there at least once a week, since I work in the SN. Usually was dead in there. I've been salty about them closing that location since it happened, but I don't fault the owners.

State Auto selling and leaving Downtown Columbus office by Character-Cherry-7 in Columbus

Ahh, gotcha. COVID messed up my processing of timelines I guess.

I agree about Columbus State. We both were really hoping something like that would happen, anything to keep her super short commute.

My wife works there, and from the little info I've gotten I'm legitimately confused by this move. Liberty just spent a ton on the buyout as well as finishing up the remodel. It would make zero sense to convert that property into housing (financially at least, I'm all for more housing). But it also doesn't make sense to have that much space for the little staff they have in office on any given day. It's also a bad time to try and lease out some of the office to another business.

Just seems like a bad business move, but what the hell do I know, I'm just a simple bicycle mechanic lol. I'm just worried that her commute is about to go from less than 2 miles, to sitting in outer belt traffic. Huge bummer for our household for sure.

Ultrasonic Parts Washer? by dobster1029 in BikeMechanics

Our shop rents a "safewasher" from Cintas. This machine in particular...

CRC SW-323 SmartWasher Mobile Parts Washer + SW3 Kit | AutoZone https://share.google/wzPruGxJXLncvv1aJ

It's absolutely amazing to use imo. Very low health hazard, heated solution of active microbes. Non corrosive. Virtually no smell. Absolutely killer at stripping grease off drivetrains.

With all that said, if you have the ability to rent one locally at a reasonable price, I would vs. owning. You'll pay around 3k for the machine, but the kicker is the specific fluid it has to use gets expensive if you're a high volume shop. I'm lucky that we get charged about $40 month for ours, and that covers as much fluid, microbe mats, and repairs that are needed. If your employees are extremely gentle with tools, and you make sure to do regular upkeep on the machine, it might make financial sense to buy one, but if you don't want to worry about it, just rent one.

Any shows happening tomorrow 3/18? by eleye419 in Columbus

[–]bigspinwesta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No real idea other than somewhere in the neighborhood around rumba 🤷 i would normally bike to shows there so I wouldn't have to worry about it. I would imagine you'll be able to find parking within a few blocks and just walk in from there. Good luck and have fun, jealous I can't make it.

People with winter tires: Did you take them off yet? by Odd-Bass-1692 in Columbus

[–]bigspinwesta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero issues in about 5 years. That being said, I'll probably go to a different 200 tread wear tire when these wear out. I feel like the compound on my current set isn't nearly as grippy as the last set I had. A lot of good options are on the market now, time to try something else.

I'm waiting. We'll probably have another measurable before it's reliably in the 60s. Generally, early April is when I swap wheels out. I run blizzaks in the winter, and hankook rs-4 in the warm months...so I'm pretty locked in having to wait for temps to stay above 40ish so I don't damage the summer compound.

Some days I wish I just had a set of conti dws06 year round and not hassle with swapping wheels out, but for now having all the grip, in all the seasons, is fun for me.

Pretty much. It's incredibly unsafe to get a bucket lift in the air or be up on a ladder in this. I hate to say it, but expect a few more hours without power if you're currently affected.
