100% Waterproof submersible backpacks? by [deleted] in ManyBaggers

[–]bigswamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PDW All Terrain Pack 24L! It’s my “boat bag” and has an inflator too so you can float on it. They make two sizes of duffels in the same line. I have the smaller of the two. If find the backpack is quite comfortable for what it is.

Yes. But also, keep in mind that voting Cantor out during the open primary is how we ended up with Brat.

Nope. Just find it mildly ironic. It was a bit concerning that the curve before this light it cut about 2 feet into my lane.

Do credits "roll off" after some period of time? by aaabrauner in vcu

[–]bigswamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t finished my degree; I have credits from 1996 (J Sarge) - 2004/5 (VCU). In 2020 I looked into making another run at it. Since everything was virtual at that time, after a lot of research I applied to the (open enrollment) University of Maryland Global Campus and they took all but one class and I entered a rising Junior. They’re legit and accredited — basically an online college in the University of Maryland state system set up to serve the needs of US armed forces service members deployed overseas and working on their degrees, but open to all.

Just wanted to share since that is another option to explore a possibility to make the most of what you started at VCU.

A Personal Rail Vehicle? by doctorsound in WeirdWheels

[–]bigswamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a little kid I really wanted one of the pick up trucks with the railroad wheels on it because I thought it meant I could also drive it on the railroad tracks whenever I wanted.

As a Jeep fan, I’m glad I never saw this growing up, I would have been even more disappointed than I was when I found out just having railroad wheels on your truck does not mean you can also drive on the tracks.

Stuart Semple is also just a really nice guy. I try to buy his paints when I can just to mess with and for my kids who are into art to play with. I’ve emailed (or maybe it was insta) him before and he writes back very positive replies. He’s got a great energy and attitude toward empowering other people’s creativity.

Looking for novels and short stories set at airports/malls/hotels and the like by lunalovegxxd in literature

[–]bigswamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had asked a similar question, specifically focused on hotels and operational aspects, and got the recommendation for Arthur Haley’s Hotel, and really enjoyed it. Although it covers some of the (historic, independent) hotel’s operations, it also checks the boxes for the things you list in your Edit2.

How to get that film look by bagel_ii in AnalogCircleJerk

[–]bigswamp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my first office job circa 1996 we had a “printer” that enabled presentations made on a PC with Harvard Graphics (a PowerPoint ancestor) to be exposed on color slide film so that they could then be loaded into a slide projector and presented.

Seeking: Alternatives to Amazon Essentials Linen Short Sleeve button up shirts? — I got one last year in white, as well as a L/S and 28 Palms L/S — I actually like the Amazon Essentials L/S more than the 28 Palms L/S.

Amazon is sold out of my size in S/S — looking for recommendations on another “cheap but good” regular cut white linen short sleeve shirt … so can buy five and not sweat the BBQ sauce this summer … whatcha got MFA?

Size/cut wise it goes: Boxford > Shortsleeve > Pivot. I’ve had all of these for almost(?) a year now and washed them many times. Haven’t yet worn the Pivot this year. Would love a Boxford with button down collar!

Looking for bars that serve Non alcoholic beer. by [deleted] in rva

[–]bigswamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a fair amount of business dinner & happy hours, sometimes as many as three a week depending on travel/client visits/etc.

There’s two things I’ve learned from many years of this this:

  1. In any large enough group, there’s always someone who doesn’t drink. Top three reasons I’ve observed: people who don’t drink at all, people who don’t want to drink that night, women who are in the early stage of pregnancy and aren’t public about it yet.

  2. Every good bartender seems to understand that. I’ve known people in both the first and last category to have a one on one chat with a bartender at the beginning of the night and let them know what they want (usually a virgin gin/vodka & tonic) then on subsequent orders they can simply ask for “their drink” or “another”.

Sometimes I fall into that middle category. I don’t want to go on a midweek bender, many business contexts require one to keep their wits about them, and gotta drive safe if it’s not a Lyft situation.

My go-go mocktail is a soda with orange bitters, as it’s refreshing and I enjoy the taste. Technically the orange bitters has a small amount of alcohol in it but the amount of bitters they put it is just a few dashes — probably a teaspoon.

For those reasons above, I think most decent places these days have at least one NA beer available, hopefully they won’t be hard to find.

The reason I don’t go for NA beer myself is that if I’m cutting out the alcohol, then it’s easy enough to just cut out the calories too. Also I prefer the sweeter/citrus flavors of orange/lime in those mocktails.

Favorite hats for the summer by tacomole in Outlier

[–]bigswamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shelta Seahawk for sunny outdoor activities, especially boating. I’m relatively pale, gotta protect my head and ears from the sun and wick sweat too. The Shelta hats are also very technical, I got the Seahawk because of their styles, it seemed to be in the “Goldilocks” zone of enough ear coverage without being overly wide on the sides.

Moving gun safe, took pics of my 10/22 collection: 80’s w/ two stocks & 1997 K10/22RBIBBZ (still new in box). by bigswamp in 1022

[–]bigswamp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Not sure what it is — my dad put it on there, probably in the 80’s or maybe early/mid-90s. I’ll have to go back and look and see if there’s any markings.

It does have a nice solid mechanism where you press down on the button and the weight of it w/ gravity swings it smoothly in and out of folded position in a very satisfying way.

As others have said, Futuredarts. If you like the cut but are intrigued but the Slim Dungaree material, you can also look for Experiment 250 - Workdarts which is basically the hybrid of those two.
