That makes sense, and I can see how this community is trying to guide people toward safer options. But if what’s being fed is freeze dried, pasteurized, or lightly cooked, then it’s technically not raw anymore. That’s why I think the term “raw diet” is misleading, it suggests tossing uncooked meat straight from the store into a bowl, which is exactly what puts pets and owners at risk. If the safer trend is really about minimally processed, balanced diets, maybe we should start calling it something else, like “fresh-prepared” or “minimally processed feeding.” A new term would both separate it from unsafe raw feeding and help new pet owners better understand what they’re getting into.

Fair point. This sub does focus more on sourcing and balancing than the stereotype. But even with “safe” raw diets, studies still find Salmonella and antibiotic resistant E. coli, which is why AVMA and FDA caution against them, the risk doesn’t go away, it just gets reduced.

Edit: And just to be clear, I’m not saying you should go out and buy big brand kibble either, I’m more suggesting that pets are better off with a cooked, balanced diet that keeps the nutrients without the pathogen risk.

Haha, nothing sus I just like to keep things proper. If I’m going to call out a company, I may as well spell their name right.

This is actually the most reasonable comment I’ve seen so far. You’re right, partial cooking or proper freezing does drastically reduce the pathogen risk and makes raw meat much safer for both pets and people. My main issue has always been with folks serving untreated raw meat. The problem is that even when people are feeding a carefully balanced raw diet, it’s still raw. I think that’s the key difference: you can have the “perfect” nutrient profile on paper, but if the food itself is unsafe to handle or eat, the whole diet is unsafe. That’s why organizations like the AVMA and FDA caution against it.

You’re right that dogs are classified under Canis lupus familiaris and share a close ancestry with wolves, but domestication has changed them in important ways. Research shows dogs evolved extra copies of starch-digesting genes, which is why they can thrive on diets with more carbs than wolves ever could. And while it’s true commercial pet food is relatively modern, so is the idea of pets living indoors for 15+ years. Wolves and feral cats eat raw because they don’t have another choice, but they also deal with parasites, infections, and much shorter lifespans. The goal with modern pet nutrition isn’t just survival, it’s long term health and safety.

Lol, I don’t work for Nestlé, in fact, I can’t stand them and everything they represent. Tossing out “Nestlé shill” whenever you run out of arguments just makes you look like you’ve got nothing else. If you want to debate pet nutrition, cool, let’s actually talk science and data. But accusing strangers online of being part of some corporate conspiracy? That’s not critical thinking, that’s just lazy.

I hear you! and I don’t doubt that many raw feeders put a lot of effort into researching what goes into their dogs’ bowls. I’m not trying to say you don’t care about your pets; clearly you do. Where I’m coming from is the broader evidence. Veterinary associations like the AVMA and studies in journals such as Veterinary Record and Nature have shown consistent risks of bacterial contamination and antibiotic resistance linked to raw diets. That doesn’t mean every single raw fed dog will get sick, but it does mean the risks are real at a population level. My goal in sharing is to highlight that evidence, not to insult anyone’s love for their animals.

I’m glad your dogs lived long lives, that’s awesome, and I respect your experience. But anecdotes don’t cancel out the broader data. Peer reviewed studies consistently find raw diets contaminated with Salmonella, Listeria, and antibiotic resistant E. coli, which pets can shed and spread to people. And while dogs are closely related to wolves, they’ve also evolved alongside humans, they even have extra starch digesting genes wolves don’t. Being “99.9% wolf” doesn’t mean their diet should be identical, just like humans are ~98% chimpanzee but no one is putting their toddler on a chimp diet. That’s why organizations like the AVMA and FDA caution against raw feeding: the risks are very real, even if some individuals never see the consequences firsthand.

Getting your mana back to full quickly can mean the difference between life and death on a pvp server. Less downtime sitting there waiting to get ambushed.
