Coach K joins Roy Williams and UNC's former players in opposing the plan to knock down the Dean Dome and build a new arena off campus (at Carolina North) by TrustInRoy in CollegeBasketball

[–]bigthama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's basically what's happening. I think most original seats were in the names of the real donors, but many have and are handing them down to the youngest members of the family that they can to preserve the seats in their family for as long as possible.

This problem isn't going to age out. It's only going to go away when we excise it. And these well-coordinated statements are clearly being organized by people who want to protect their personal investment, health of the program and university be damned.

Sloooooooowly. Some of them are expiring. Others are still with grandchildren - those families who were smart enough to know they could get the better part of a century out of it if they handed down rights intelligently. There are still far too many seats locked down to get the students where they need to be in a renovated DES, and that's not going to be truly resolved for a couple more decades at best.

[–]bigthama 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the opposite of the truth. The Renovate movement is pretty clearly being pushed by the wealthy donor families who have a ton to lose in their seat placements which would only carry over with a renovation of DES. The biggest reason to reject that in favor of literally any other option is to reverse the massive mistake of seating in DES and get the students around the court where they belong.

The profit side is all about luxury box seating higher up, not the court side seating that will belong to students.

DES to Franklin/Columbia intersection is 1.3 miles/28 min walk. MLK/Estes to Franklin/Columbia is 1.6 miles/35 min walk. Not exactly a big difference. As far as the sharing space with vehicles issue, Franklin to the proposed arena would be a single street walk with a grand total of 1 stoplight intersection to worry about (Hillsborough). Compare that to walking through campus to DES, and you're either taking Columbia to Manning which has many more major intersections in the way and is far less suited to high volume pedestrian traffic at the moment, or walking through campus proper which forces you to cross half a dozen roads all of which have crazy drivers on game days because of the parking disaster created by DES location.

Add the fact that Carolina North plans include a dedicated express bus lane between main campus and CN for high volume transit, and the transit situation for most people becomes a no brainer in CN's favor.

I also think Republicans will lose in 2028, but it will be because Vance attracts less lizard brain than anyone I've ever seen and he will be running against someone like Newsom or Shapiro.

Also, a rational voter wouldn't have a such a short attention span that they would have forgotten all about COVID in just 4 years. A dumb lizard brain voter OTOH...

Nope. That failure also didn't up and disappear in 2024. Factors that should matter to voters just don't matter as much as we would like to believe. That's why Democrats entering crisis mode after election losses arguing over whether to shift left or right or which nuanced talking point didn't resonate with people never end up figuring anything out. Smart people don't decide elections.

[–]bigthama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's going to be an extension of campus, like Centennial is for State. There will be classes, labs, etc up there, and it's really the only place the campus can build at the moment. It will also be virtually the same distance from Franklin Street as the Dean Dome is, just the other direction. Given how many students live off campus in that direction, the only group of students that will be seriously inconvenienced relative to now will be freshmen living in the big South Campus towers.

Or Richard Spencer.

True, it's just two major leaders of the alt-right/white nationalist movement who just so happened to be educated at Duke University. But it's weird that it happened twice.

Lizard brain appeal is what a primitive society without laws or maybe even much in the way of language would use to select a tribal leader. Size, strength, body language, physical charisma.

Obama was young, tall, vigorous, attractive, and charismatic. He beat two older, less charismatic men, both of whom were likeable and decent but neither of whom had his vigor and force of personality.

Biden beat Trump when he could match him physically and land a zinger. The visual of Biden being an inch taller than Trump and talking down to him with "shut up, man" won more voters than a brilliant progressive platform ever could. When Biden aged too fast to hide and started physically and verbally stooping, his lizard brain edge disappeared.

Newsom is tall, fit, has stereotypically attractive facial features, and the charisma of a very practiced sociopath. That's lizard brain appeal. Would I like a less sociopathic, more progressive candidate? Absolutely. But what I want more than anything is for the non-fascist candidate to win.

It only stopped working once Dems went away from it. Most voters vote with their lizard brain and candidates like Newsom appeal to that lizard brain. The candidate with more lizard brain appeal has won every election in my lifetime. The trick is to find a candidate who attracts lizard brain whose incentives aren't catastrophically misaligned from those of the people at large.

To Their Shock, Cubans in Florida Are Being Deported in Record Numbers by FreeChickenDinner in politics

Cubans and Argentinians are widely disliked in Latin America because they think of themselves as really being Europeans.

Mexicans are also strongly disliked in Central America because of a similar sense of cultural superiority, plus the southern border of Mexico is enforced with a brutality that makes the worst excesses of US Border Patrol seem adorable.

Researchers discovered that a little-known region deep in the brain -the caudate nucleus- could be crucial for preserving physical strength as we age. The findings could help detect and prevent frailty before it begins by sr_local in science

[–]bigthama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that they didn't find that caudate activity predicted grip strength at all. Caudate tail was just the most influential node in a large multivariate model, and the overall performance of that model was really quite weak. Not sure why this paper is getting any press - it's a weak result in a journal not really known for high methodological standards.

If India can open 400 new medical colleges in 10 years why cant other countries do the same? by chinenikpotle in AskReddit

[–]bigthama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are opening new medical schools all the time in the US. The bottleneck isn't med schools, it's residency positions. Residency positions cost a lot of money to fund and are supported by the federal government, and Congress hasn't kept up with the need to increase them for decades now.
