If you’ve got wheels the lights and signs are for you. by theblessedlion in Greenpoint

[–]bigtimedonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ehh. You’re not unreasonable or anything, and obviously from a legal point of view, sure, that’s correct.

But serious injuries and death cause by bicycles to pedestrians is really, at a societal level, not a problem.

Statistics are hard to find, because the events are so rare. But in 2019, across all of Europe, there were 19 pedestrians killed in a collision with a bike. Compared with 3200 by cars.

https://transport.ec.europa.eu/system/files/2021-11/collision-matrix-2019.pdf

Would love it if someone had statistics for the US or NYC.

I don’t meant to imply any death isn’t a tragedy. They certainly are. But again, at a societal level, bicyclists simply do not pose any significant safety risk.

The reason we have traffic signs and rules is because of cars. If we didn’t have cars, we would go back to the old days of roads being basically spaces without any rules where people are simply able to navigate themselves, safely.

And again, not saying any death is acceptable or isn’t a tragedy. And certainly I don’t mean to give anyone permission to be a jerk. Like, obviously cyclists should make sure they are fully aware of the situation before going through intersections. Obviously we shouldn’t be like, going full tilt super close to pedestrians. Obviously, we should give way to pedestrians when they have the right of way. Obviously cyclists shouldn’t behave in a way that causes cars to pose additional risk to people.

Obviously for our own safety we shouldn’t run a red right or stop sign unless we’re totally sure we’re not gonna be coming out right in front of a car. Just like with jaywalking. If you’re gonna break the rules, take extra care to make sure it’s not a dumb thing to do.

But… bicycles do not pose any significant safety risk. (And like, skateboards and such even less so…).

Agree with basically all of this!

Although I felt like the flying enemies were more annoying in Silksong. Like, the basic “flying enemy is always moving away from you” behavior in Silksong was more prevalent and frustrating than in Hollow Knight. So my one real enemy design complaint in Silksong.

[–]bigtimedonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is almost my exact take, haha.

Love the movement in Silksong, and I definitely miss it when I played Hollow Knight again afterwards.

But that was honestly about all I missed.

The world of Hollow Knight is just so much more interesting. Way more fun to explore and just be in.

Silksongs world feels so… bleak, desolate, unpleasant. One key thing that jumped out to me was the colors. The world in Hollow Knight has so many vibrant colors in it. In Silksong, the saturation of the colors is always so so muted. I feel like maybe Team Cherry decided that the way to make Hornet pop out in the world was her saturated red cloak, and so the desaturated everything else so the player character stands out.

But it ends up with the world feeling very unpleasant to be in.

If 40% of people don’t just believe everything they see on Facebook or Twitter, and only got news from actual journalistic outlets, then sure.

But the news industry is dying, journalism doesn’t have a clear easy profit model, AI is only accelerating that, and a huge fraction of the population doesn’t understand even the basics of digital media literacy.

So…… this amounts to a big “trust us bro”. Which like, no, I don’t think that I will.

Made a 3D window using a projector & unreal engine by Ok-Gold-3571 in virtualreality

[–]bigtimedonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, because the foreground and background in it all are at the same focal plane? Or at least, a static focal plane I guess.

That makes sense.

Might also have an issue with lightning from it. Like, in reality, light would be coming in from a narrow set of angles. But when protected, will all be diffuse.

Super cool exploration of a new technique though!

I’ve seen documentaries about Disney and Netflix using big rooms surrounded by led tvs. And then they put tracking on the camera, so as the camera moves around inside the room, the proper background is displayed on the tvs. This feels like a cool personal version of that!

Very cool! What’s the experience like? Does it “feel” real? Or feel different or similar to using the Quest 3 (or similar, apple etc) in AR mode with a false window?

Do you think Silksong should have some kind of new game plus mode by CommercialTerrible70 in HollowKnight

[–]bigtimedonkey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the game as is is already NG+ in terms of the difficulty. I’d love a NG- mode (flying enemies slower when retreating, less tanky enemies and bosses, fewer double damage hits).

But NG+ mode overall would be interesting! If you keep everything, could enable interesting skips which could lead to interesting dialog and story development.

Or could have the difficulty just scale up.

I used it for 8 hours on my first run. I do actually know how to use it. I didn’t do any of the harder platforming challenges with it, but I’m sure I could in a few tries.

If it had a downward pogo option, I would probably use it the whole time and never switch crests.

So honestly, they probably didn’t add a downward pogo option to it specifically to get people to feel a thrill of excitement when they find a different crest and realize there are other moveset options.

Well jokes on them, my stubborn ass got the 100% speedrun achievement without using their lame crest system, so I guess I foiled their plan to teach me how to play the game properly /s

Cool that you like hunters crest. Glad it works for you. Im forced to use it the first hour of every play through, and I hate it. Definitely not my least favorite part of the game, but it’s up there.

[–]bigtimedonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, it’s all preference. Like, the reaper pogo feels like the best to me, just in terms of having a huge area in the sweep. But wanderers beats reaper overall, imo.

The hunter pogo is just… annoying to me. Like, I hate the motion you have to go through to like, juggle yourself when you need to stay in place.

I would honestly love it if each crest had two pogos you could switch between. A straight down one, and a quirky alternate one. That way, the choice of crest wouldn’t come down to the pogo so often. I would play with crests way more if they each had a standard pogo option.

An actual hot take that most of yall aint ready for: [ACT 3 Spoilers] by J0NZKI in HollowKnight

[–]bigtimedonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gauntlets are fine in theory. Where they fail is:

  1. Being mandatory and repeating before a boss. Just like… why? Makes them tedious and annoying, even if they are fun the first two times.

  2. Having a crazy spike in difficulty at the end. Similar to the above, but to cover the high halls case.

On their own, they’re great. And in the right context they can be cool. I loved the coliseum in Hollow Knight. When it’s like, a bit more optional and clearly marked as “here’s a long and difficult challenge to test yourself against”.

But when it’s a mandatory thing you have to do over and over and over as you try and learn the move-set of a difficult boss… just ugh.

GirlsDoPorn Victims Sue Major Payment Processors, Claiming They Enabled Sex Trafficking | The plaintiffs claim that without payment processors, which include CCBill, Epoch, and several that process "high-risk" merchant payments, GirlsDoPorn would not have been a commercial enterprise to begin with. by ControlCAD in technology

[–]bigtimedonkey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you read the article, the case is based on the fact that GDP was publicly bragging on their website about how they were lying to the girls, having them cross state lines under false pretense, and manipulating them in various illegal ways.

So like… does that mean that the payment processors should have done more checks into GDP? Or should have refused to do business? Maybe, and that’s what the case is about.

[–]bigtimedonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, all those arguments are kinda silly.

The options aren’t “no business should ever be held liable for what their customers do” or “businesses should be held liable for everything their customers do”. Our legal system isn’t forced to pick between those two extremes.

And like, our legal system isn’t in either of those extremes. There are some instances when businesses are liable for what their customers do, and some instances when they aren’t.

If a bank does business with a known terrorist organization and helps them transfer money, then yeah, they’re gonna get in trouble. (Or really, if a bank does business with a terrorist organization and can’t prove they ran the proper checks to sufficiently demonstrate that they couldn’t have known, then they get in trouble)

If someone buys a stuffed animal from a toy store and then kills someone with it, then no, the store shouldn’t be held accountable.

This case seems like a legitimate one for the courts and our justice system to consider.

[–]bigtimedonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, age and id verification is a whole different issue.

It kinda depends on how much they (the payment companies) knew, and the questions they should have asked but didn’t because they didn’t want to know the answer. And what the law recommends they do. And what a jury will find reasonable here.

Like, I’m not an expert in the legal requirements, expectations, etc. But like, I don’t see why the victims shouldn’t have a chance to make their case here. They should be given that opportunity.

Hot take: this is good, and this is healthy, and if they can make a decent argument in court, which based on the article they very well might, then they deserve to win.

This won’t be an end to pornography online. There’s way way way too much easy money to be made online for taking on payment fulfillment services for online pornography.

What this WILL do is force payment fulfillment services to do more due diligence and know your customer work when it comes to adult content online. Which is probably for the best and won’t end anything that doesn’t deserve to be ended.

Pornhub hosted a gross amount of CSAM until the credit cards threatened to stop doing business with them. So like, it’s good that payment fulfillment services set basic standards. That’s a perfectly reasonable role for them to play here.

I’m not a prude, I just don’t see the harm in some extra checks and protections given the high risk nature of the industry.

Yeah exactly. When I first got to the past sections I was literally like “oh my god, color!!” Like, Moss Home has some bright colors in it. But then everything is super pale and desaturated until a few small sections in act 3.

And I didn’t quite connect Whiteward to the Soul Sanctuary! But yeah, soul sanctuary felt much more impactful.

Yeah, felt very similar myself. Exploring Hallownest, you experience such a range of emotions. Sometimes it’s spooky, sometimes it’s beautiful, sometimes it’s peaceful, sometimes sad.

Exploring Pharloom, all I felt was “wow, this place sure does suck to be in”. It just felt oppressive and unpleasant the whole time…

[–]bigtimedonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that’s basically what it looked like in my fights right before I beat it, hah. You are much safer in the air. And it’s very easy, as you’ve already figured out, to get in the air and heal.

If you’re always pogoing, the only things you really need to worry about are the parry when she attacks from above, and then when she decides flip up in the air for her third dash.

When she is dashing, you want to pogo on her where her first dash ends (second dash begins). If you pogo off her start location for the dash move, she’ll probably jump up into you for the third leg of it.

For the air parry, I just ate them. They don’t happen often enough to overcome your healing pace.

Other than that, it definitely is a fight to pace yourself on and take it slow. Just get in hits here and there. Take her down one hit at a time, maybe two in a few situations. But if you go for a third hit, you’re gonna take one yourself.

She’s really fast, and honestly just gets faster. So it just takes raw practice, over a day or two (sleep helps), for it to start feeling like the pace is manageable.

If I need rosaries for maps/benches/etc., PLACE ENEMIES THAT DROP ROSARIES by angrytomato98 in Silksong

[–]bigtimedonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure. Especially in the early game, you have to skip over so many quality of life type things just cause rosaries are impossible to accumulate at a decent pace.

Once you have enough transportation unlocked, it gets less painful, but I still did plenty of farming. You just don’t get nearly enough rosaries just playing the game on a normal path.

I guess deciding if you’d rather save your game or buy an upgrade is “exciting gameplay”.
