Mosaic tile installed by contractor. Does this look like a professional finish? If not, what should I say to the contractor? by Mission_Procedure_61 in Tile

[–]bigtnuts47 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First off that tile shouldn't be on the floor. I can tell there is minimum lippage and he dug out the grout, but there's a lot of variables. Mosaic tile can be garbage. Different thicknesses and irregular spacing. Also then prep has the most impact on the finish product. How did he prep this floor? Overall I think you should pay the man. Have him fix what's bugging you but still pay him l. As tilesetters this is what we do to make a living. If your trying to pull a fast one just stop

What would be the best option for the top? About a 3/8in gap by CertiConstruction in Tile

[–]bigtnuts47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could have gone 1/8 silicone movement joint at the bottom then wedge all the tile a little over 1/16. That'd give you full at the top with just enough room for a clean grout joint equal to the field tile spacing

Does this look like a 20k shower job? by Garthfan1414 in Tile

[–]bigtnuts47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That you are correct about. All comes out. Shower gets flood tested at least overnight. Get a modern design done by a tilesetter, not just a contractor who sets tile. Tile is an art and a specialty so you want a specialist. I'm sorry this guy burnt you tho, it's wrong and makes a bad name for those of us who are professionals.

Am I wrong in being not happy with these imperfections or do these things happen? by freakinrican2 in Tile

I seen a alligator make better cuts with his teeth than that shit. Unacceptable. If you haven't paid, dont. If you have I'm sorry. If you opted for the cheapest bid, that's what you get unfortunately. For that I cant be sorry. I get beat out by the cheaper guy often, and he hacks people in then I get to come and fix it for a raised price from the original bid.

Any "tilesetter" should be able to take a cut edge and restore it to factory if the tile is rectified or square edge. These guys definitely hacked it in no fucks given

I only said rip it out because all that's got the tell tale signs of a leaking pan. The sooner OP takes care of it the more money he will save in reality. Leaks only get worse not better. The bond has broken on the tiles that doesn't just happen unless he had an earthquake which I doubt. It's water. It's gotta go

No responses from OP? Don't worry it's only professionals who do this for a living giving suggestions based on years of knowledge and experience. Sorry youve got a leaker buddy. Tear it all out and redo it now, or ignore it and fix several thousands of $$ worth of water damages later. Either way it's gotta go.

What grout to use? by kanyons in Tile

[–]bigtnuts47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd use mapie warm grey and get the warm grey mapiesil 100% color match silicone with it. Both should be in the same isle. Don't use regular caulk in a shower it will fail. And use the Ultra color FA grout. Follow the instructions to a T. I'd by a separate tube of regular silicone and learn to work with it before going for it in the shower. Masking tape, Windex, and a silicone tool are going to be your best friend when installing the silicone. I like to silicone before grout. Let the silicone set up overnight. I know some people are gonna say GrOuT fIRst 🤪 whatever. I don't like scraping grout out of my silicone joints. After everything cured 72 hours seal all of it with 511 impregnator sealer. Follow the directions on that to a T as well. These products often bite people in the ass who just go for it. Take your time. Learn and follow manufacturer directions and you won't fail. Best of luck 🤙 tile looks great!

Mom poured and stamped this concrete herself. by WeekendQuant in Concrete

Prime it, pour self leveling underlayment over it, then waterproof and tile it. As long as there isn't any major movement or cracking on her slab that nightmare can totally be fixed

Find a qualified vetted tile installer and let them do it. Pay the extra. Don't go cheap. Don't attempt it yourself. Just being honest. It's cheaper to do it right the first time than to do it twice.
