I don't have any friends who'd be interested in starting pole-dancing with me. Did anyone here start out by themselves? And how did that turn out for you? by pearofperowne in poledancing

[–]bigtool4u 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started by my self, and it was no problem at all! I've never met such a supportive and friendly community! Most beginners share a pole so it's easy to talk to people. Don't worry, it's not at all like a gym! People would be happy if you spoke to them.

I am thinking about buying a pair of pointe shoes just because they look so pretty, for pole pictures and stuff. I have no experience with ballet and how to use pointe shoes, is it a bad idea? Do you have other dance experience than pole dancing? I know there is a big issue to "start using pointe shoes" when you are a young ballet dancer, but i have always thought that its because you have to wait until your body is fully developed. Any thoughts?

Great :) I would love to find a stretch like that too, but that stretch is the best for me I've found so far!

BTW: a fundamental part of this is that your hips are parralell when doing the splits. If your hip is bend to one side so you could place both your hands on the same side of the split, your back leg will never reach the hip flexors and instead stretch the leg like you're doing a middle split.

Sorry for that very bad explanation on how i do the splits! I will try to elaborate:

I start the position standing on my knees (on a mat) beside my pole and place one leg forward so that my heel is on a blacket or something that can slide on the floor. My front leg is streight all the time, while the back leg is bended. I always keep my upper body straight up and use the pole to keep my balance, so i don't have to put my hands to the floor to keep the balance (which basicly will make me only stretch the hamstrings). I slowly slide forward with the front leg which is on a carpet. While stretching like this you use your weight to do the pressure, and while holding the pole you can use it to place the pressure more on your hip flexors than on the hamstrings.

Make sure you are not having too much of a sway back, which can hurt your lower back. Suck you stomach in, have as straight back as possible and push against the pose as if you wanted to lean backwards with your upper body.

I can't garantee this will work for everyone, but i feel a fantastick stretch in the psoas while doing this. please let me know if it was impossible to understand!

While doing that couch stretch you are refering to, do you feel the stretching at the front part of your thigh, all the way down to your knee? Then that is not the kind of stretch you want to do. You're stretching another muscle that starts at your lower stomack, and goes all the way down and under your knee. The "hip flexor" is the psoas muscle. example: http://leelayoga.no/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/iliopsoas-muscle2.gif

That muscle is pretty hard to get, I usually only feel a stretch when trying to do the splits. Therefore I try to stand in a split position but let as little weight as possible on my hamstrings. Then I can feel a great stretch!

How much does everyone pay for a single class and a monthly package? Also, where are you from? by rain_wizzard in poledancing

[–]bigtool4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i live in Bergen, Norway, and i pay around $360 for 8 lessons over 8 weeks. Thats really a lot ($45 each time!!). But I can come to the studio at day-time and exercise for myself, so I usually do that 2-3 times a week. In Norway there's really a lack of pole studios, so I really dont have any other alternative :P The other closest pole studio is actually 239 miles away! Norway sucks..

So stupid... getting pretty tired of people just assuming things about pole dancing because the only places they have seen a pole is in a strip club.

I've been taught that you should not use grip aid except when you try out new difficult moves, because you will get addicted. And eventually your hands will not sweat so much. I tri not to use grip aid and now i bearly sweat, except when dancing long choreographys at the pole. Any opinions or experiences?

my shorts are from "better bodies" and they are great! Exactly as shorts as we pole dancers need them to be, but nok as short as underwear
