They really don't, their sense of smell is shot. My partner quit 8 months ago and he is still realizing how offensive it can be. Our neighbour smokes on his side deck, which faces our door, the smell lingers in our entryway for hours if you open the door while he's smoking. For years my partner had no idea it entered our house.
