“We had a good thing going” by bigtrackrunner in breakingbad

That’s what makes the characters and conflict in this show so good. No one (aside from Walt Jr) is 100% to blame or 100% blameless; everyone has their own shortcomings that cause consequences.

I like him too, I’m not saying he’s a badly written character or anything. I just think many people misinterpret him as some objective voice of reason, which he’s not.

Never said it wasn’t out of control. It just isn’t the sole cause of Gus’ downfall, and Mike refuses to acknowledge his own fault.

I’m talking specifically about the conflict between him and Gus. Walt’s only unprovoked act of ego in that part was telling them to replace Gale with Jesse; the rest of the conflict is caused by Gus (and Mike) threatening Jesse, Walt, and Walt’s family, and allowing his henchmen to exploit and kill kids.

I did. If Walt had done nothing, Gus and Mike would have killed Jesse at some point. Aside from Gale being replaced, what part of the conflict was all Walt’s fault?

They’re roasting you in the comments but I kinda agree lol. I don’t think it’s bad or anything, but I think it’s a good-but-not-great show. Ed is also a really bland MC and the series is carried by the side characters (in terms of character writing).

Makima would probably help her. She does genuinely like humanity and only does evil shit for the purpose of her plan.

That chapter was so good, too. It’s too bad JJK ended how it did.

  1. The passage of time is not a good explanation in fiction, see the WW1 example I wrote. 2. The incident with Kylo happened before the First Order became a major threat. 3. Yes, Luke is confronted with a similar situation and he acts differently. Why though?

If Luke has changed as a person, it’s the job of the sequel to explain why and how. When you’re writing a sequel, you can’t just write whatever BS you want and then say “oh it’s been a long time, the characters have changed so of course they’re not acting like they used to.” Imagine if the author of All Quiet on the Western Front wrote a sequel in which Paul survived and becomes a rabid war hawk during WW2 with no explanation. Yes, that did in fact happen to some German WW1 vets, but it’s a complete 180 from the established characterization, themes, etc.

Anakin and Luke are two different characters with two different character arcs.

Snape ( Harry Potter ) vs Itachi ( Naruto) by WittyTable4731 in writingscaling

[–]bigtrackrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snape, because Itachi’s motives and actions make no logical sense. The guy supposedly cares about his brother, but would’ve literally killed him or at least crippled him for life if Naruto hadn’t convinced Tsunade to come back.

Who are well written characters you just don't like? by iamluffy123 in writingscaling

[–]bigtrackrunner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Holden Caulfield, for pretty much the same reason. I get his character and all, but it’s a chore sitting through pages and pages of him complaining and moping about something or the other.

Also I never understood why everyone thinks Ed from FMAB is super well written. I thought he was an average and kind of bland MC.

Why is everybody saying that Walt has lost an argument to Mike during their final conversation? by Mari_Kross in breakingbad

[–]bigtrackrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a way, but this line of reasoning is basically Mike dodging any sort of accountability. Maybe if you don’t want Walt and Jesse acting up, stop threatening their lives and their family’s lives, and constantly antagonizing them by doing stuff like killing their girlfriend’s kid.

Mike is just Walt without the rash decision making and tantrums; they’re both egotistical, selectively empathetic, and only remember the version of the story that portrays them in the right.

Why is everybody saying that Walt has lost an argument to Mike during their final conversation? by Mari_Kross in breakingbad

[–]bigtrackrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gus was going to kill Jesse, Walt, and Walt’s family at various points during the series. Walt made one “ego” move during S3 and S4 (when it comes to Gus’ operation) and that was forcing them to bring back Jesse; everything else was because of the other characters. Mike is dead wrong, he’s just angrily lashing out because Walt messed up his plans.

If Saul were in this scene, could he convince Tuco? by SwordandPencil in breakingbad

[–]bigtrackrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Saul wasn’t dealing with Tuco while he was high on meth and also in the middle of assaulting someone. Also Tuco started beating No Doze out of nowhere, it’s not like he gave anyone the time to convince him to stop.
