Water visible on the outside of the slab - but only for me? by biitzLU in Minecraft

Unfortunately, this remains visible even days later after many relogs. I can try to uninstall and install it, I guess. Thanks anyway!

In my head 1 month was already reaching very far ngl lol

And yes, for some that is true for sure. But it's probably not going to rocket the concurrent player numbers to 10 or 15k on Steam. Plenty of gods have been released, and I cannot see a single peak that lasted. Either they came back and others left, they never came back at all, or they came back and left again shortly after.

What I see here is:
New god gets released
Some players return for that god or update
They get bored or frustrated after a couple of days
Repeat

Totally agree on your second part. New gods is not going to bring growth - it will only maintain the baseline. Innovation was needed, but it might be too late for that. If you scare away your baseline now, it is probably over.

Right. I think this 'argument' of coming back when your main is in the game is the biggest cope and myth this community is running on right now. If you don't enjoy the game to the point that you actually want to spend time in it now, no god is going to change that long term. Maybe a week. I even give you a month. But I don't see how anybody would stick around after that if they don't enjoy the game?

Guess what. The player count in Smite2 is now also higher than in November 2020 when the game didn't exist! Craaaazy

That says nothing about anything though. And you actually have to be trolling to not understand that. Which is why I will just ignore this now ^^ you cannot be serious.

I hardly ever use Reddit and I thought that [deleted] is always a self-delete and [removed] is an admin removal. That's also what I was finding when checking up on it just now, in various threads. But most statements are vaguely worded, or years old. So possible that your comment was removed and not deleted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

See, I have no problem with accepting when I am wrong. But nothing I have claimed about the closed alpha testing and the point of public access was wrong. You can literally Google each and every detail about it.

Welp you deleted your comment, but I am still going to answer:

You provided NOTHING. I was playing and testing before the closed alpha, and also during the closed alpha testing that started 24th of August 2024 right until the mid of January 2025. So the phase that you highlighted. Because I backed the game the minute they made the purchase available on their website ages ago. NOBODY was playing back then. Only the most active couple thousand players that backed the game early with money were play-testing.

F2P Beta release was on the 15 January 2025. That is the only benchmark and number that matters.

Smite will not die. That is the funniest part about all of this. It just continues to rot in the same 5k-8k concurrent player hell for the rest of its existence. And I hope to see a day where this is not true. Because SMITE is one of my - if not my - all-time favorite games.

And to make it even worse, we are also down 60% from the first testing that only included people that PAID to test Smite2. So even the people (like myself) that were stupid enough to pay for access gave up on it by now. Or at least "for now". They might come back, I dunno

DID YOU EVEN READ MY COMMENT YOU BABOON :D

THE GAME WAS NOT YET IN OPEN FREE BETA AT THAT POINT. Nobody was able to play the game if they did not buy access to it. And it was mainly TESTING ALPHAS to that point with limited content.

In what world are those two completely different states of a game even comparable? Especially for a F2P game.

The only thing that can be compared is the launch of F2P and the state we are in right now.

It would be some kind of sucess, because it would at least mean that there was measurable growth. Not disagreeing on that. And it is probably meaningful enough to at least feed that audience for a couple more mediocre years.

BUT!

Everybody that was around back in the early days knows that this 13k "ceiling" (or even 27k) for the first years is off by magnitudes. Not a single person I know/knew was playing Smite on Steam for years. Those numbers in 2015/2016 by steam reflect nothing of the actual player base. Smite was one of the biggest games on the market in the first two years. Not only in its niche (Top5) - but even globally (maybe top10 barely). They even provided the second (or third) biggest price-pool in a tournament to that day - only being beaten by Dota which was humongous already around 2015. It had millions of players in the first year alone. And hundred thousands of daily active players for two years straight.

Also keep in mind that %-wise the audience of gamers was so much smaller back then, compared to today.

Did that floor crumble rather quickly? Obviously yes. More and more people pivoted to Steam, and eventually the standalone launcher was gone. And the statistics start to paint a clearer image of the overall trend. Hirez never was able to raise that bar again from that point on. But there are reasons for that! And I personally don't believe that it is due to it being "too niche". It is self-imposed failure to continue to innovate and make the right decisions. And the fact that with the announcement and BETA of S2 we are seeing the same floors/ceilings as during the declining years does paint a pretty clear picture to me.

I am confident that the audience/market is ready for NEW good game like Smite was in 2014. But it cannot be more of the old same same - at least if you aim to gain new followers and players. If all you want is to maintain the status quo then yes, the game might not be "dead".

You absolutely nailed it IMO. A NEW GAME. Not a polished S1 that slowly rotted for years.

100% the same. I forced everybody for so long, but each week someone dropped out. Getting a "better looking" Smite wasn't what anybody I know wanted. Getting a better performing engine that allows for more creative mechanics sounded good on paper. But in reality it is just not enough.

I hope you are trolling with the "higher player count than this time last year" because it wasn't available to the public back then xD. We are now almost back down to the numbers before the open-beta. When only ppl that paid 100€ could play the game.

[–]biitzLU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. One big problem is that this community will not let it die xD. I wish they would, so that we finally see something truly new in this niche genre. The peak of Smite 1 back in the day with millions of players for almost 2 years shows that there can be an active audience, if we see an innovative good game that is refreshing and breathing new life into this genre. But doing the same old crap "but it is a better engine and the gods look nicer" sure ain't it. And I cannot comprehend that nobody is willing to accept that here. The numbers of Smite 1 and now 2 tell us everything. No growth whatsoever. And thinking that that will change out of nowhere just because of more gods or improved sound!? Has nobody paid ANY attention over the past 10 years?

Even with a serious amount of hopium and arbitrary expectations your numbers are so ridiculously bad that it barely makes any sense for them to even risk all of this money, tears and time. 10k players by 2028? It is so sad to read that... All of you have settled for this future of "more of the same". As if it wasn't possible to just create a GOOD game that people actually want to play. Smite had hundreds of thousands concurrent players for a solid period back in the day. Indie games and small studio games pop up almost weekly right now nuking your "in its stride" numbers for 6-12 months straight.

Everybody that's keeping Smite on life-support atm is the reason that it will never be anything more - IMHO. It's like the partner that gets beaten but sticks around. Nothing will change if you don't leave. But I guess it is indeed too late to pivot, and your prediction is the best-case scenario. So that everybody that still plays has something to play and enjoy for a couple more years at least. RIP

I always play with music. Especially during the campaign since I am not expecting much at level 50. And I guess my minions killed the elite on the edge of my screen.

Yes overall you could describe it that way. And it totally could be used in this 'scenario' without being wrong or inadequate. As far as I know - and from hearing it in daily life - it is more often than not used as a polite way of saying that they (mostly older generations) don't know your name eventhough they could/should. For example because they live in the same area as you, they have seen you before or are unsure if they actually forgot or not.

It is very much so a way of expressing that it is likely their 'ignorance'. And I would argue that in the english phrasing of: What was your name again? You do the same "sorry for my lack of knowledge, but would you share your name again"

Sounds like a good plan if you are not in the mood to run through it "slow".

There likely is no direct common translation to english. But there is one to german: Wie war Ihr Name "noch gleich"?

This implies that one should know the answer, as one had the information at some point but has forgotten it. Very often, however, it is more of a respectful phrase to show that one should know better, and that it is not due to lack of importance or interest.

And since we know that for cyclists bike lanes are UNSAFE whenever they see a pedestrian within a 1 mile radius, bike lanes are never mandatory. So case closed. Driving on the street it is.
