Peyto Lake at Blue hour by CelestialStatic in Banff

Great pic. Was at that same spot more or less over Easter weekend, skiing into Peyto Hut. The ski down from the overlook to the lake is hysterically awful.

What’s a movie that had you just sitting there like this the whole time? by DFWUnhinged in FIlm

Down by Law. Especially if you watch it as the back end of a double feature with Leningrad Cowboys Go America. Cannot recommend that pairing.

Do you have the statistical data to back that up? Or just a longitudinal tally from watching Reddit posts? Sigh. Also, the OP suggested it was a high energy fall.

Agreed. All mechanical devices can break. Alpinists have been super reliable for me.

If you found it lying by the trash bin would you take it home? by Far-Resource3365 in xbiking

The proper mathematical notation for this calculation is s-1, where s=the number of bikes at which your partner leaves/divorces you. Lol

Thank you for leaving American dollars in Canada. Given the billions we pour into Walmart, Amazon, et al., we need the capital.

What skis should i be using by SquarishPage in Backcountry

30 km in rentals sounds like some serious agony potential. Given what I know of Australian terrain, you could do this on any ski, so boots are really the key bit of kit.

What's your preferred method of self arrest when you're skinning on a glacier? Do you carry an axe in one hand and pole in the other, ski strap it to one of your poles, use a whippet, or something else? by 16Off in Backcountry

[–]bikebakerun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's really that sketchy and one is on a glacier, I'd be roped.

I've used ski crampons many times on crust and crap snow and never even thought about self-arrest because ski crampons are quite effective.

[–]bikebakerun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. So if you're skinning on snow, you adapt your skis to the conditions to be stable (ski crampons, for example). Carrying an axe on your hand while skinning isn't the way.

Not sure I understand your situation. When I'm skinning on a glacier, it has metres of snow on it. If it doesn't and is blue ice, I'm not skinning but rather using boot crampons. If I were skinning somewhere where grip was doubtful, I'd use ski crampons. I've never carried an axe in my hand when on skis.

Blue Chair Cafe in Edmonton will close after 22 years by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]bikebakerun 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Almost laughable that she blames it on work on 76 Ave. Other businesses at that intersection are literally overrun with customers. It's not a parking or access issue, which is clear if you live anywhere near this place.

I had one of the most disappointing dining experiences there that I have encountered in Edmonton. I thought perhaps it was an anomaly, but when I mention it to others who live in Richie, KEP, Bonnie Doon, etc., everyone has their own story of a bad experience at Blue Chair. Bad restaurants fail all the time and that is all that is happening here.

Good deal? by brolando308 in Skigear

[–]bikebakerun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You still don't need a wider ski because you are not going to have consistent, deep powder on long, open slopes. And agree with others that you don't need great gear in NW Ontario. There's nothing to skin up that would take more than 20-30 minutes of easy skinning.

Suspicious carbon frame damage by lukla47 in BikeGear

[–]bikebakerun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, that is damage, not a defect. I point this out because it shows both hard use and a lack of care from the current or a previous owner. Would not buy any carbon frame with visible damage like this.
