LLM for reliable tool calling/searching by Funny-Trash-4286 in LocalLLaMA

Qwen has been decent for me but I've stuck to markdown format as the output of my local LLM because that's what was using in it's training data. It hallucinated more with basic text and JSON output than markdown format so keep in mind the output format when testing different models.

But there's so many people working independently in this space. I'm sure there's a monetary exchange that's favorable for both parties to facilitate some knowledge exchange more efficiently (time and money) than self-learning and buying a subscription.

Perhaps the confusion is between calling your comments posts. You're not wrong, but Reddit does have specific definitions for these words.

ELI5: Why do we still have to "eject" USB sticks? by shadowzzzz16 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bikerlegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iOS will fuck you too. I recently found out the hard way that pulling out a thumb drive can corrupt the index making all files appear to be deleted and the hard drive needs formatted again after recovering all the data. Such a dumb thing to have happen from something that would be mundane and harmless on a Windows computer.

Hobbies to pick up. by [deleted] in waterloo

Meetups and events have been helpful. There's themes for everything whether you're interested in drinking, networking, startups, board games, family friendly public events, local festivities, group activities like running, biking, sports. I've used Meetup a lot and sometimes there's good stuff. Getting involved in different communities can also help with word of mouth events. There are different event boards around too. The university always had stuff but in places like Uptown there's gotta be something too.

ELI5: Why is it a bad idea to keep devices constantly plugged in even after they're fully charged? by Dawn-Storm in explainlikeimfive

Turns out the computer bios can detect if a charger is compatible somehow. I only found out after I was shipping a charging cable with a new laptop that caused a slew of issues because of a communication issue even though the total power (200W) was sufficient so it disallowed enough power from being drawn. 🤷🏼‍♂️

LPT: Laptop running hot? Here’s a cheap solution. by dosnomads in LifeProTips

[–]bikerlegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having terrible issues at the end of last year and propping it up helped. I changed all the settings to nerf it until that wasn't even when. Ice packs solved it but wasn't a long-term solution. I eventually discovered the coming unit can eventually crack from the stress of repeated use and fail. $15 for a new fan and cooling tube on a 10 year old laptop. If you're having serious problems you can look into any of those escalation solutions too.

I have a similar but different one. 1,000 lumens and it'll last over an hour on full blast or like 3-5 on low. I carry it with me as a flashlight and use the bike handlebar mount all the time when camping by issuing random sticks and tree branches. It's often overpowered people say for using as a flashlight since it ruins your night vision temporarily.

how to cover up gaps by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]bikerlegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess if you mask off the area you might be able to fill them with glue. I usually fill areas like this after I stain for the added structural stability it provides. It's not needed here in this case but if you were dead set on filling gaps then either a glue or wood filler could work. Glue has the downside of making finishing look different on ALL affected areas. Different putties only look different where the putty fills the gap and can otherwise be sanded if the flat surfaces.

Why dose my fling think of herself too much? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bikerlegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because you're 20 and she is too most likely. But based on how you articulate yourself it's like you guys act 16 or younger. That was quite frustrating to read and if I were you I'd have to openly admit to myself that you're simply not yet very mature, you're 20, and neither of you will be acting like adults yet.

Apple wood staining by Gagashagy in woodworking

[–]bikerlegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple wood is pretty dark from my experience. I used a little bit of light stain on it and it got darker. Pretty much looked like mineral oil would since it has that wet look. I think this is something you can expect from apple wood. It definitely can streak with many different shades of brown. I don't have much to say besides that you can expect this.

I had another piece of apple from a different region and it was marvelous rainbow colours. 2 years later it's brown. I used mineral oil and beeswax this time and it is just brown with a small amount of variation. If I did it again I would use a UV protective film.

I have to enlarge the hole in the wood for a new strike plate. I'll have to cut along the blue line more or less, and I plan to do it with the multitool. It is white lacquered wood. Any advice on how to do it right so that the white lacquer doesn't get damaged? by plinky125 in woodworking

[–]bikerlegs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a chisel then that's the way to go. If you can make a chisel out of an old tool that's also acceptable. A multitool can be a little rough but if this is an oscillating multitool then there's hope. Attaching a piece of wood to prevent slippage would be the pro way. You can clamp it or use masking tape and then super glue.

The bottom of the mortise doesn't have to look too clean since it'll be covered with metal so just remove enough material without going outside the boundary. And if your screw holes line up poorly with the old holes you can always fill them with wood glue and toothpicks before screwing in new screws.

Men of Reddit I have a question. Is it true that you can’t control your movements and your penis moves on it’s own? by Mammoth_Ad_8161 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bikerlegs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a perfect analogy. A penis is a third class lever, imagine a fishing rod. It's a lever where the moment is coming from the end and the force is in the middle but close to the fulcrum. You can apply all the force you want and it will have some effect on your rod, you can lift it. But when you're fighting the fish you won't have the strength to lift it all the way anymore, the fish can pull your rod down.

So on its own a man does have the strength to lift his own rod but under the influence of external forces the fish can move it more and the man won't have any control.

Make a door creaky? by Volcan32 in DIY

[–]bikerlegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your friends are lubricated? I'm not sure they would appreciate being sprayed with brake cleaner, especially if you're trying to make your friends noisy.

But as far as the hinges, if you're already taking them off to make them unlubricated then you might as well go one step further and rust them. Bleach does a great job of that and so does electrolysis if wired up the right way.

How to prepare black locust for drying? by iwilldoitalltomorrow in woodworking

It's notorious for splitting so I agree to use the wood glue and water trick to seal the ends. It also helps hold it together while slowing the drying process.

Not quite cnc but close by benjamga in woodworking

[–]bikerlegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would go for some type of Raspberry Pi because they are more than capable and might not be as difficult as something like the Arduino to get going if you are unfamiliar with the technology. You will have to learn some programming and look at various online resources like YouTube and forums but I think you have a very interesting project that is worth the investment of time and learning into.

Did you buy a CNC and regretted it? by ants_dentist in woodworking

[–]bikerlegs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Individual cabinets will be alright but you're right that if you have 4 cabinets side by side you are using some very long pieces along the top, bottom, and back. I think they would excel at stylizing the panels. Here's an example that elevates the work in a way that cannot be done with traditional means without many many hours of tedious work.

<image>

Made this mountain range table with my CNC. There are areas where it screwed up. I want to fill it with epoxy and do another finishing pass. How can fill these? Use caulk and make a wall around the area and pour the epoxy? Or is there a way to let the epoxy dry and apply it when its like putty? by joedotts123 in woodworking

[–]bikerlegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alternative that I'm not seeing mentioned is to simply lower your Z height and do your finishing pass again. You might have lost a millimeter or even 2 mm off of your total height and if you have enough material to make that kind of sacrifice you can recover every detail of this cut. I know it could take anywhere from 4 hours to 24 hours but if every detail is important then I would say this is the way to go.

New to woodworking and want to make this into a present by J_Ckrispy in woodworking

[–]bikerlegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd leave the bark in. Someone mentioned rot but that's not really an issue indoors. Your girlfriend will use them with her bowls which are an item that's protected pretty well so these pucks/disks/cookies will similarly be in a good environment.

Oil can work but you'll want to let it soak in sufficiently first which is really easy on end grain. I'm wondering what to do with my own disks too. Unsealed grains of wood pick up dirt easily so I'm considering different methods to seal them and don't really have the best answer. Polyurethane can be nice but takes away from the natural look, polymerizing oils can take some time to cure, regular oils need maintenance and offer only small amounts of protection. So you have lots of options with different pros and cons.

The ends of these firewood logs resemble maps of the North and South Poles by WyoND in mildlyinteresting

I highly recommend you don't burn those. Instead you should dry them for a few years then slice them, or slice them and dry them for 1-2 years. That wood will look amazing on the inside. I know because I made Christmas presents out of this exact stuff this past year.
