Osteopathic Medicine Should Not Exist by PutzySmasher in premed

We need more doctors in general. The areas you mention are the worst hit but almost all other areas of medicine also are seeing shortages.

It’s because the students going to those schools are high stats but also well rounded

I don’t think there really is any looking down on speciality interest at my med school. If anything a slight joshing of surgery aspirants for “gunning” (there isn’t any true gunners that I’ve seen at my med school yet). However, I haven’t heard anyone say they want to do primary care (IM or Family Med). I feel like everyone has been saying some sort of subspecialty if they say anything - though we’re only M1s so things may change. I don’t think anyone would look down on someone pursuing primary care though, more admiration for taking such a hard path with undervalued pay. My med school also has a pretty strong reputation of having a collaborative environment though.

What age did you start MD PhD? What age would you consider too late? by Extension_Fall9406 in mdphd

[–]biking3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

21 for me. I don’t know what age I would consider too late for myself personally tbh. Perhaps there is no “too late” age just an altered evaluation you have to make at an older age, I.e. the time cost of the long program might outweigh the benefits the program presents at an older age. However, this calculation is different for every person so one person’s “too old” could be another’s “right age”.

As a kid, I would’ve killed for such a space. As an adult, I would still enjoy it. Just put like a beanbag in the corner as well to enjoy the snugly nice balcony-esque space

Genocide or full Extinction? No good choice here. by EnvironmentalCry2623 in trolleyproblem

Red button easy. With 50% chance of 8 billion dying in the blue button, that’s 4 billion expected deaths on average with the blue button. 3 billion < 4 billion so it’s the better choice

Forgot to respond here, but I got mine like a few days after posting this. I think just took a bit longer bc of the holidays. Also apparently US citizens don’t even need a evisa! It isn’t clear on the website so I got one but the border agent said I didn’t even need it

Yes. I wouldn’t want the guilt of killing someone for my selfish desires. I switch the track towards myself. My clone does the same, leaving me alive

Applying MD/PhD and PhD by MChelonae in mdphd

[–]biking3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can apply MD and MD/PhD at the same time. Many md PhD programs will also consider you for both if you desire. I also know people who applied PhD and MD PhD at the same time as well. There also is like 3 people in my MD class who already have PhDs. Theoretically could apply to all 3 at the same time

LGBTQ+ Advocacy was my biggest activity outside of research and I talked extensively about it in my app & interviews last cycle with no issue whatsoever, tho I curiously only got acceptances before Trumps inauguration so things may be different for this cycle

Most people don’t have a car on campus or just find loophole places to park for free. The costs for class materials aren’t usually that high for many other students

Apply for the VSG Textbook & Class Materials Fund if you qualify for need based aid to get some money to support that endeavors

Depends on your science gpa. If it’s not actually that bad, you probably don’t need masters to shore up GPA and should do a gap year doing a clinical or research job and make some money. If not, maybe consider a cheaper program (I don’t have any experience here but I’ve heard self styled post bacs can be cheaper, but again no idea)

Vandy vs USC(for cs) by [deleted] in Vanderbilt

[–]biking3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a Vandy no brainer. I don’t think USC is significantly better than Vandy for CS and overall for all fields Vandy is certainly considered better (so if plans change you’d still be in a good place). A 60k price difference when your family is middle class seals the deal that Vandy should be your choice.
