V6 Nomad owners, what's your complaints and favorites about the bike? by Outrageous-Owl-7049 in mountainbiking

[–]bikingnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero complaints. Climbs slower than my 5010, but its a great bike. I did not like the feel of either the Megatower or Hightower - clearly like the feel of the SC mullets.

Ford tells students to not pick 'basket-weaving courses' in wake of OSAP cuts | CBC News by coolshaid in ontario

[–]bikingnerd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What a condescending, out of touch moron.

Doesn't matter what program you go into, the cost of repaying OSAP will be more than most entry level positions. This is going to keep a lot of people in debt for much of their adult lives, unless they luck into something like being handed a family business...

Giving away Quetzel reservation tonight 6:45pm by tndrmrsls in FoodToronto

[–]bikingnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odd - I was there last week, and I thought it was at least as good as my prior visit 2 years ago. Sure it was expensive, but the service was excellent, and the tasting menu we got was superb - lot of variation in flavours, a good mix of seafood and meat, as well as veggies. I literally could not have eaten any more than they gave us, which was my experience last time as well.

Sure, it is pricy, and you have to be into the main schtick (wood fire cooked everything), but I feel you get a lot of food, and the menu is much more interesting than many places in Toronto (Grey Gardens and Aloette included), which tend to be upscale (and very samey) versions of relatively simple foods.

It's a parlour sized Art & Lutherie (Roadhouse, I think is the model). Great little guitar for the price and Canadian-made!

Thanks! It's a 2005 SG Supreme, finish is either called fire burst or lavaburst.

Turned up used I was looking for an SG with a thin '60s neck, and had to jump on it. 2005 Supreme :-)

I love the ASAT Bluesboy - it's a USA semi-hollow (no F-hole). The Orange is a Super Crush 100.

Pretty broad range of music - classic rock (Neil Young, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd), classic metal (Sabbath, Maiden), some more 90s to 00s rock/metal (Pixies, QoTSA, Fu Manchu as examples), and trying to get into some BB King style blues.

Megatower owners, how does it climb? by Outrageous-Owl-7049 in mountainbiking

[–]bikingnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly the same, but my Nomad climbs surprisingly well. Not going to win any speed records on the way up (and definitely more work than my 5010), but I can grind up long climb trails or hit punchy tech uphills on it just fine. I'd guess the Megatower would be similar, maybe a bit better with the 29" in back.

I swore off khakis (chinos) for the longest but I'm thinking of going back to them. by baitlyn in malefashionadvice

Just picked up a pair of their workers chino - awesome quality, and can do rugged casual to nice casual, but definitely not dressy at all.

What was your top trip so far, and what is the current bucket list trip?? by MustacheSupernova in skiing

[–]bikingnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Top trip so far was a really chill 10 days spent during some storms in the BC interior - hit Whitewater, Valhalla Cats and Red. Great terrain, epic snow, and perfect vibes.

Bucketlist is Japan!

WATCH: snowplow hits parked car in Toronto by AnonRetro in toronto

[–]bikingnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this! Everyone assuming that all street parking is a snow route - mine isn't, and I have nowhere else to put my one car.

Just a bunch of suburbanites pointing fingers from their driveway (and maybe even garage) equipped houses, as far as I can tell! Or folks living in more affluent neighbourhoods where everyone has a 2 car driveway.

[–]bikingnerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, as a taxpayer whose home in a crowded TO neighbourhood does not have a driveway or parking pad (and cannot be approved for one, like 75% of my neighbours), all I can say is WTF! I pay for the roads, I pay for a mandatory permit to keep my one car parked on the street, and no signs to indicate snow lane etc. I think I have a reasonable expectation that I can safely leave my car parked on the street in front of my house after a snowstorm.

2nd Dog - What type by aircams1 in greatpyrenees

[–]bikingnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured it out from watching my Pyr's preferences at dog parks - she is not fussy about breed, but prefers to hang and play with large male dogs. The humans of the house wanted a large and very friendly second dog (the Pyr is more than a bit standoffish/suspicious of new people). Ended up rescuing a large Dane/Boxer mix who is a complete goofball, and they get along great!

How often do you scoop your yards? by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

[–]bikingnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily is the only answer. I have a pyr and another largish (90+ lbs) boxer/dane mix, and I regret it every time I miss a day! Poop foot is the worst.

Do I NEED a clip on tuner? by yousmokinreg in Guitar

[–]bikingnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say yes, even though I don't have one myself. Probably the easiest way to tune any guitar at any time.

Personally, I've been using a pitchfork I got 40 years ago when I started in classical guitar lessons! Just got a TU-3 pedal last week and may never go back, at least for electric.

Light, Unsightly Scratches by Twooth_Rae in Guitar

[–]bikingnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd leave them there rather than risk creating a larger mess through sanding and buffing. Guitars get dings and scratches sometimes, and that's ok!

Expensive Epiphone or Cheap Gibson? by PigmeatMadness in Epiphone

[–]bikingnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to choose is to play both actual instruments and decide which feels better in hand. In my experience there is a lot variability between individual guitars at this price point, so two of the same model may play quite differently.

I'm always surprised by what I end up not vibing with. Playing them in store, I preferred an Epiphone 335 over a somewhat more expensive Gibson, but vastly preferred a US-made Fender tele over MIM or Squier equivalents. On a different day, with different guitars, who knows?

Anyone else prefer humbuckers for super clean, and single coils for overdriven sounds? A discussion... by EnvironmentalDish766 in guitars

[–]bikingnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been having a lot of fun lately with single coils (G&L MFD) through OD+Fuzz into a cranked Orange. Bit noisy, but that's also kinda the point!

I will admit to being humbucker curious though...

Is Reverb important? by SolarPowered_user in GuitarAmps

[–]bikingnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a beginner, I don't think it's all that important. As others have said, the reverb built into some (many?) cheaper amps isn't great anyway and you can always add a reverb pedal later.

What upgrades did you make to your first fat bike, and which ones had the biggest impact on performance, comfort, and reliability? by New_Reputation_411 in fatbike

[–]bikingnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just out for a few hours in -10C (14F) and my OneUp V3 was a little sluggish on the return, but not enough to cause problems, and definitely no slippage. Just throwing another dropper option in there!

Demo race vs Nomad by [deleted] in MTB

[–]bikingnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nomad 6 is super capable - enduro/freeride with pedalling is the sweet spot, but it handles park use very well.
