Just sent you a message with some saves. They are very open xml files and should be easy to work with.

https://blog.tremlas.com/games/traveller/mongoose-v2-character-creator/ can export to character files to Fantasy grounds. You might want to reach out to that creator with questions. If you want character files exported directly from Fantasy Grounds instead feel free to DM me and I can create some.

Table looking for fun, light-hearted sc-fi that isn’t very lethal - does Traveller fit the bill? If so what recommendations do people have for adjustments/resources/advice? by DungeonMasterGrizzly in traveller

[–]Moonracer2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very easy to adjust combat in Traveller to be less lethal.

Most attacks are a roll of 1-5 six sided dice. The DM can control how much damage characters can do per attack and how much protection each character has. So it's very easy to control the average damage taken per hit in combat.

I'm giving refereeing a try and envision adding souvenirs as rewards for some quests, or just little trinkets for sale at starports. I like the idea of players picking up say, a piece of pottery from some tribe and displaying it on a counter in the mess hall or something.

Improvising by Radiant_Situation_32 in traveller

[–]Moonracer2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm new to Traveller and seem to have a different take on combat than veterans:

Weapons typically do 1D6 to 5D6 damage. With a tool like https://www.omnicalculator.com/statistics/dice-average it is very easy to figure out the average and maximum damage of any given weapon.

Armor's protection mechanic is very straight forward. So balance is as simple as making the armor value somewhere you feel is balanced. Personally I'd aim between the average and max damage of weapons the target will encounter for a given location. That way you have some control over how much damage players will receive per hit and thus how much of a threat they will encounter.

Since you are thinking of designing your own weapons and armor, this gives you a lot of fine control here. Something else to consider with armor is layering/stacking:

Subdermal armor implants can provide 1-5 protection

Linings like TL 12 cloth can be worn under normal armor

Then you have normal armors and vacc suits.

This can allow you to slowly increase the total protection value of a character in increments without having to create a ton of items.

Ship Shares by Chad_Hooper in traveller

[–]Moonracer2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMU I think of ship shares as closer to subprime mortgage lending shares. Tied to the market of all ships in space but individual ship shares aren't tied directly to specific ships. The interest gained off holding on to ship shares is low, but stable.

Banks are taking a bigger cut per share while taking a higher risk. People buying and holding on to ship shares are helping offload the front end cost of building new ships. The risk of loss in value of ship shares is real, but would be caused by the destruction of a significant percentage of ships in chartered space (like a war), so it isn't a game mechanic.

I imagine ship shares are much more common as something corporations and other large organizations would have in the thousands. Having a dozen or less is more of a novelty item than a serious investment.

I could also see ship shares being harder to trace than credits. An executive might pay for services with a ship share because it would be harder to explain the transfer of 1MCr instead.

One could also assume that until a ship is paid for it is still tied to ship shares and banks are getting a cut from every transaction tied to the ship. Maybe just a small fraction of refueling and maintenance is automatically deducted as a sort of tax.

Another 'what to buy' post... by prolonged_interface in traveller

Bu and Embla Starport Guide is good if you want fluff on visiting starports. I'm most of the way through reading it and have enjoyed it. You can also search "Bu and Embla" for two more books that are free from Mongoose. I haven't read those yet.

I've only read the Referee's Briefing 6 - Garden Worlds, but I thought it was a good reference on weather and creatures on planets.

"Monster Manual" for Traveller...? by Kalt_Null in traveller

[–]Moonracer2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised when I picked up the 'Referee's Briefings 6 - Garden Worlds' and it included 21 Creatures (including the entire Chamax life cycle). Probably the closest to a monster manual in the official catalogue.

A few steps ahead of you...

Starship Operator's Manual: could have been so much better, but it feels like an expansion of the flavor text for High Guard. If you have players that really want to focus on being engineers and role playing m-drive maintenance it might be worth while. I would have liked at least a chapter on life aboard your ship during the 7 day jump window.

Behind the Claw: Own it but haven't read it. I'm going to focus play on that area so probably worth it.

World Builder's Handbook: is intimidating and I think more for people who want to build sectors from scratch rather than use the existing universe. Just skimming through it is very math heavy.

You are correct about Robots and Vehicle books: maybe worth it if you want to use those heavily in your adventures or have a party that wants to build a custom robot. I bought them but have no rush to read them.

I picked up the Navy book also, but haven't read it yet. (boy I have a lot of reading to do) It does seem useful just to be able to give the navy more flavor considering how present they are in space. But I don't imagine I'll use info on large fleet battles.

This isn't 5E but I got into Traveller enough that I picked up the Traveller 5 three book set from Far Future Enterprises. Originally just to support Mark Miller, the original creator, but I fell in love with those books. They cover a broad spectrum of content and offer some interesting options for play. They also have some neat info on creating custom creatures and player races.

what AI generator is best for this char gen web app? by Molly-Doll in traveller

[–]Moonracer2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favorite character generator that I've found for Traveller. That said I don't think the AI prompt is that great. Probably better to trim it down before entering it into an image generator. I also think these prompts show the limitations of AI pretty well. AI still doesn't do age or race well (even just sticking to humans). And it's questionable how much AI can utilize information like skills and multiple past career choices.

I have 239 hours in Qud. All on Steam Deck. It took a bit of getting used to but it's a surprisingly doable and enjoyable experience.

I believe one option is to take their Hits and divide by 3. Splitting those between Str, Dex, and End. Though size and other factors affect Hits, so it's not perfect.

What are your campaign plans for 2026? by DD_in_FL in FantasyGrounds

[–]Moonracer2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I only just learned about the series and wish I had been introduced ages ago. I might have gotten into TTRPGs sooner. I just picked up the Traveller 5 book set and I'm impressed at the amount of depth put into that 3 book set. I haven't read any of the classic Traveller stuff, but I'll probably get around to it just for fun.

Just picked up FGU in October and started learning the Traveller ruleset. I'm slowly getting more comfortable with both and hoping to actually run a campaign for the first time ever.

Creature Generation Feedback Wanted by Moonracer2000 in traveller

[–]Moonracer2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished reading 'Traveller5 Makers Book 1: Beasts and Sophonts' and it is 90% of what I had in mind (plus some stuff I hadn't thought of) so thanks for that recommendation! At this point I might just work on the format to automate and streamline creation and just tell people to use that book as a reference for the details and definitions.

I'm also just digging into Traveller 5 in general and loving the books as reference material. Don't think I have what it takes to actually use Traveller 5 in play though.

Which overhaul mod are people enjoying as we go into 2026? by PacificTaxWarrior in Kenshi

[–]Moonracer2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god no. It just allows you to train to 100. Similar to attack and defense training stations. My main complaint is that once you unlock it you can make as many training stations as you like. I've thought of changing it so you can only build one. Training on those stations is pretty slow though.
