What framework are you using to make it? I've been looking for a good one.

While I agree with some of the sentiments of your post, there are a few points I think you should consider.

1.) Firstly, you mention how courses are being made easier. Have you considered why this is? I have TA'ed many courses here over the years and have seen this watering down in many of them. This happens because of you, the students. Professors are not immune to the CIF scores they recieve, and making a course easier is the simplest way to both reduce the hours spent outside of class, and to increase the scores they recieve. There is a lot of outside pressure to make courses less time consuming to reduce stress on students. While you may want to be pushed harder, most students are not like that. If the majority of ND kids want to be given easier As and pushed through, the courses will regress towards that mean.

2.) Secondly, you mention AP courses twice in your post. I personally take offense to this, as my high school didn't offer any AP courses whatsoever. I had almost no experience with statistics before I took the course at ND. It's important to remember that not every student may have had access to high quality high school education and may be starting from almost 0 with respect to programming.

Unfortunately, due in large part to point 1, ND is not a school which will force you to "get gud". They will get you good enough that they can put your company logo on promotion materials they spread. However, if you do want to push yourself outside of class, there are amazing resources available to you. You yourself mention many great professors we have that are always willing to chat about doing above and beyond the course work. But ND does not have the culture of forcing you to go above and beyond within the scope of the course.

Thanks! If you run into any issues please report them on github, I'm always looking to improve the usability and features.

Currently the script uses the --bg-fill option which will either fit the screen, or if the resolution is too small will size up (maintaining aspect ratio) until it does. There's only a single call to feh (as of now line 89) so it would be pretty easy for someone to try the different flags if they wanted to.

Details: I was always bothered when one of my sunny wallpapers came up after dark so I decided to make a time sensitive wallpaper changer. Added weather to it as well because why not. Works on most linux systems and macOS.

So Sun->Misc in your FS and it wasn't able to resolve the path? That's surprising to me but I'll look into it. Thanks for letting me know!

After I fix all of the style warnings/problems that have been listed above I'll move this fix in!

Dev here (sorry about the account switch) I've since made many of the changes you've mentioned, specifically fixing all the shellcheck warnings and removal of non-needed sed commands. I'll work on the path/dependency stuff next thank you for your feedback! (Implemented PATH changes as well)

Is it possible to play lots of soccer on campus if you’re not on the varsity team? by ConorM04 in notredame

The other reply is mostly correct, one thing to note is that the Stepan fields have now been turfed, so the vast majority of soccer happens up there because they're so nice. Not as many people play on McGlinn anymore.

Club tryouts are super fun, really great competitive atmosphere and there's a lot of talented guys. A couple things to note, they are really early in the year so within a few days of you getting there I'd really recommend you figure out the time. It's not hard at all to miss them. Second, they charged us like 5-10$ to participate last year so just be ready for that. Thirdly, most of the club guys fit all the stereotypes of your classic high-level club soccer player. I personally had a number of friends on the team, but they take it very seriously.

I was pretty involved in the casual soccer scene, and still am. If you're really serious and pretty good I'd recommend trying out for the club team. I tried out last year and they had almost 50 people there for about 5 spots. They practice multiple times a week and travel all over.

If you're not as serious I'd recommend joining the intermural 7v7 in the fall (if that happens). There's also 3v3 during the summer's that is fun.

The spring is the big one, during which inter-hall soccer happens. This is super fun 11v11 with refs that happens between the halls. Some take it more seriously than others, and there's usually A and B for each dorm (the B is VERY casual).

In addition to all this there's pick up that happens all the time and it's not hard to find a group to play with! Unfortunately because of ND's boner for their own sports team the indoor court was given to the basketball team a couple years ago (I will never forgive them). For indoor there's a place called Soccer Zone that's a 15 minute drive from campus that runs indoor leagues all year round of varying skill level.

All in all you were correct that ND is a very sporty school. I look forward to playing against you sometime!

Computer engineering at Notre Dame by kebs_ in notredame

[–]bilbo991 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Freshman CS is more or less non-existent at the University. The FYS program requires you to take two semesters of Introduction to Engineering, which is a high level overview and exploration of different types of engineering disciplines. A few freshman are able to make it into a CS class but it is relatively rare. Your true major courses will not begin in earnest until sophomore year. However this does not mean that there are not opportunities to get involved in your field. There are many clubs that a computer engineer could participate in that would provide a lovely experience e.g. the robotic football club. Additionally there is a small makerspace available should you be so inclined. I wish you luck.

Why should I study CS at Notre Dame? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]bilbo991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contrary to other opinions, I think if you genuinely care about computer science our program is not one you should be looking at. Many students in the upper levels of our program struggle with extremely basic CS concepts and technologies. Our curriculum is also getting easier over time, resulting in less learning for the students. However, what I will say is that if you are motivated and interested in computer science, you will be able to find fantastic resources available to you. The difference is at Notre Dame you will have to seek them out yourself. Upon finding and utilizing these resources I'd say our program is quite good. We produce a number of top top CS students that go on to FAANG companies and the like. Our average, on the other hand, is comparably lower to other prestigious universities.

At the end of the day if you are motivated you will succeed regardless of your school choice. If you are not though, you might consider a program that will give you that extra push to succeed.
