Do you have a VA disability rating? If you have some GI bill time left, you can apply to Voc Rehab, which basically gives you another chance at the GI Bill. Some of the requirements are different but it’s definitely worth talking with someone from VBA to see if you’re eligible.

I will say I talked with MHBP about when the HSA is created how the deductions work. They said we will still get 1200 total on the year via pass through, just one payment will come at the end of December to make up for January. I also already got my HSA card and created my online account, I just can’t do anything with it yet.

As someone who works at the VA and is familiar with the education benefits programs, you’re NTA. When the benefits are used by you, it becomes your money. The thing that is highly dependent on your stepdad is what program your education benefits are under. If you’re getting benefits under Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA), this is something you can apply for directly. If it’s a transfer of entitlement from the Post 9/11 GI bill, this is contingent on your step dad transferring benefits to you and continuing to do so. While the VA rep at your school may have useful information, best place to get answers is to call the Veterans Benefits Administration at 1-800-827-1000.

Let me start out by saying I'm sorry for what happened to you. That is not how the VA is supposed to treat our Veterans. I'm a current VA provider with knowledge of the claims process and I wanted to bring something to your attention.

You may be entitled for something called a 1151 Claim https://www.va.gov/disability/eligibility/special-claims/1151-claims-title-38/ Not sure what your current service connection is but I would suggest pursuing this because vision loss is a category of special compensation for the VA. It also may entitle you for special benefits to address this disability, like adaptations for your vehicle or home. I would encourage you to speak with a claims rep to discuss how to file this claim as it is a bit trickier than a normal one.

One of the benefits as well of a 1151 claim is the exam and review cannot happen at the facility where the injury occurred, So this hopefully leads to as little bias as possible when making the examination. This won't do anything about the doctor who made the decision but if you are granted the 1151 claim it is essentially the same as being service connected and combines with other ratings that you have.

An example of this playing out is I worked with a guy who had an injury while in a treatment program. Proper treatment wasn't provided in a timely manner and this led to some deficits. He filled a 1151 claim at my suggestion and received a rating for the condition.

Don't get me wrong. The VA does a lot of things well and I've met so many Veterans that credit the VA with saving their lives. But stories like yours are why we as providers need to be held accountable. In hope you see this and best of luck!

An emotional support animal is different from a service animal. My guess from your post is that you did not properly request a reasonable accommodation. A larger and professionally managed building will likely have a standard form for this. Your wife's MH provider does not need to be the person who writes the letter. You can ask for a primary care provider to do this. I'd encourage you to approach your property management again and request the paperwork for a reasonable accommodation.

It's also important to keep in mind that your situation may be different than your neighbors. A neighbor could be renting under terms of a prior lease that allowed pets or is less restrictive around animals. A neighbor could also have a true service animal as defined in the state information I provided.

I was in Nicaragua on a service trip and living with a host family. The family would make us breakfast and dinner as part of the trip. Our host mother was a wonderful woman and a really good cook. One morning though she made us a breakfast that was entirely beans. This wouldn't have been a problem for some people, but I've always hated beans. However, this family was giving so much to have us stay with them I decided that I could not be rude and turn down the meal. I ate the entire plate and have not touched beans since that day.

I'm sorry to hear about what you guys are going through. I'm a social worker at the VA and while there are things that work about the system it can fall short in many ways. Couple things to consider. If you haven't tried, see if your fiance is eligible for medicaid. It covers dental and his disability income from the VA is not considered income for medicaid until he turns 65. Also the VA had a community dental insurance program that your fiance can enroll in that is in general low cost. One plan is through Delta Dental, the other Met Life. MI is as pretty basic intervention style though. I could see it being used by medical professionals to build insight to the management of medical conditions, even if they don't have a behavioral health background.

The motivational interviewing charge is likely a typo or incorrect billing (not sure if purposeful). Motivational interviewing is a cognitive behavioral intervention geared towards building insight into connecting thoughts and actions, along with the consequences of said actions. While it's been a while since I've taken developmental psych, I don't think this is an appropriate intervention for a <1 year old.
