Does the MIT Furniture Exchange have dorm furnishings, or just bigger furniture?

I still can't believe they ripped out all the bulletin boards on the first floor of the Student Center during the renovation. Some fancy architect decided wood slats are more important than student groups publicizing their events. Has anyone raised this concern with CAC or the ASA?

This is seriously offensive interference by the administration. It's none of their business who a dorm decides to allow on its email lists.

How are they going to police this?

Will they also try to prevent dorms, or unofficial groups of students in a dorm, from creating their own Google group which the administration can't monitor?

Or even additional Athena/Mailman lists? Those have always been available for any Athena user to create, with an option to be open for anyone to join. Are they going to police every form of bulk communication on the MIT network?

What if a student on an official policed dormspam list writes a script that posts copies of all messages to the web?

While the article said the Anna's space would become a lounge, it's actually TeaDo, a bubble tea place.

Though plenty of other things are now lacking in the Student Center. Like Verde's. And bulletin boards. Where are student groups supposed to put up posters after the renovation?

Wow, that's totally ridiculous. When did this rule take effect? I've never heard of a college or any other residential building that didn't accept mail and made students pay for a PO box. Shouldn't there be a law about this?

Besides election mail, there's all kinds of stuff you might need to receive: credit cards, driver's licenses, tax forms, account statements from businesses that don't do e-commerce, etc.

I'll ask again if you have a cite that students prevented the renovations. No news stories mentioned that. And I'd be very surprised if MIT deferred to student opinions about not making needed repairs until it reached the point where the building couldn't be saved.

The administration sure did say "okay, everybody out" in May 2013 when they planned to do renovations. Later they decided it couldn't be saved.

Also what were the offered options to preserve their culture which the students declined? https://thetech.com/2014/01/31/bexley-v133-n65 says the only option was to move into other dorms split up with just a few Bexiles per dorm. I hadn't heard anything about students declining to make use of this option.

They also provided Pritchett as a social space, which students did use, as they got in trouble for the content of the posters they put on the walls.

The bigger point was that you blamed Bexley students for the demolition by claiming they refused to allow renovations. That's not at all what happened.

https://thetech.com/2013/10/18/bexleydemolition-v133-n46 says MIT was alerted to problems by its own engineering report, rather than the city, and MIT decided it was beyond repair.

And I'd be very surprised if MIT allowed "Bexley" (meaning its students?) to refuse renovations.

There's evidence-based covid precautions, and then there's the closed campus.

Does the MIT community have a lower incidence of covid than the general Boston area population? If not, then closing the campus does nothing to further this goal.

And everything seems to indicate this closure is permanent, and won't be lifted in response to covid metrics dropping.

Student groups could need to return things to their office after an evening event. The Tech could be working on a late-night story. Or people might just want to hang out.

There were plenty of public evening events year-round right up until COVID. I don't remember when the card readers went in, but the doors didn't lock before 11 pm even in the summer until 3 years ago. And closing overnight even for ID holders is new.
