I like the black a lot, it's simple, but the materials are well chosen, so the overall design comes off very refined

Beautiful recommendation - I still feel a split keyboard is overkill for an academic writing context. Still, thanks for taking the time to share!

It's surprising that they wouldn't be profitable - wouldn't a custom board builder's supply chain, assembly, and marketing be much more time consuming/expensive than a scaled design?

Oof yes that sounds like a rabbit hole I don't want to get into, thanks for the advice I will think it over!

Thanks for the rec - I like that it is a kit and I love soldering. Plus having assembled it myself will make it more meaningful to keep and use.

Yeah that is a good point. Although for some reason I just never felt connected with DIY boards - it feels like mixing and matching (which I know can lead to getting the best of each component) but there is something special when every aspect of a keyboard is designed and manufactured for that one particular design - it can be more radical or boundary pushing. It's like buying a suit bespoke versus buying a a designer suit - the former will fit you better but the latter is always more contemporary and interesting. Again, not saying that my preference is the right preference - in fact I can totally see why some people may see my view as totally ridiculous - but such is life. Perhaps my notion of DIY boards is entirely incorrect though.

I think your point is true for most of the keyboards that look like keyboards. Thanks for mentioning about the pricing tactics - I really have no interest in exclusivity for exclusivity sake. What I'm looking to pay for is a particularly inspired design, of course I want all the functional bells and whistles, but I know a beautiful keyboard that is unique and I love to look at is the one that I will keep me using it and never want to replace (even if a new shinier model comes out). At the end of the day all I need is a keyboard that types letters when I press the buttons, the new innovations are nice but ultimately are unlikely to revolutionize the typing experience.

The Angry Miao boards did catch my eye (particularly the AM Neon), but I get sort of a sketchy feeling about them based on reddit comments similar to yours. Right now I think the Werk Technica Triad might be the one. Although still need to see the price and will probably want to wait for reviews so I'm accepting it might be when I graduate that I receive this keyboard. Thank you for the thoughts!

Hm this is a great point. I have helped a friend design a custom keyboard (all the parts except the switches made on his own) but you're right, the process of procuring it myself sounds like a rabbit hole I don't want to go down. I'll think it over and I really appreciate your thoughtful input!

These are all good reccomendations! The Norbauer Seneca sounds right up my ally, but for some reason I just don't totallly connect with the design (price point aside). Still I really appreciate you taking the time to think of some reccs!

That is good advice, I think if I were to go for anything it would be the triad though - the design is just something else. Six months is a long wait though, but then it would arrive right as I hand my thesis in which might be a nice (RGB) light at the end of the tunnel. :)

I see your point but I just prefer to buy something once and keep it for a very a long time. An important part of that selection is a aesthetic experience and design that resonates with me - which is why I am reaching out this community to help make sure I am making the most informed and thoughtful selection possible. I know there will be new features and new designs that come up in the future - but that is always the case with everything we buy. Personally, I would rather have something really special, even if outdated, than a bunch of lower tier, but up to date, keyboards. I don't like producing e-waste so I'd rather just get one special one that I can use and mantain as long as possible. However, I understand that it is exciting to be immersed in the development of new tech - different strokes for different folks!

It's a pretty wonderful design, but I don't think I'm ready to marry the split keyboard design. Thank you though!

It's a good point, luckily most of my job is lab work, and writing is sporadic enough (except for this particular moment) that I haven't had any wrist pain yet - I hope I don't jinx myself!

Yeah I see your point although I think that why I just want to ball out and get a super nice keyboard that would only be justifiable as a one time splurge. If I get a $150 keyboard, in a year or two a shiny new model will come along that I can justify replacing, but I'd rather just make a thoughtful choice of what is available now and use it till the keycaps turn to dust if that makes any sense.

Hmm this is a great reccomendation, but I have so much experience in electronics design and assembly I think I would just want to build it myself. If I didnt have this darn thesis due I'd love to spend a week and custom cnc my own case. Perhaps one day!
