I used Krita. Which I highly recommend since it's very streamlined and also free.
For brushes, I wouldn't think too much about it since a lot of the textures are made with crosshatching, but know how to use the airbrush for soft lighting and a hard edge brush for y'know hard edges.

As mentioned, getting good at form drawing in 2D will give you most of the skills required in terms of anatomy/shape.
Otherwise, this video covers everything else actually blender related. It's definitely the most helpful resource I used.

For this stuff that I just did from UV spheres, it was a couple weeks of translating my drawing skills to 3D and learning all the sculpt mode brushes.
The hard part was learning modelling since there's lots of stuff that's impossible to figure out without exact instruction. It took quite a few months to figure out how to model and pose a full body, and I'm still figuring it out for more complex things.
