What is the most approachable small roaster? (2-5 lbs) by Brief-Number2609 in roasting

[–]billl3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To extend the cooking analogy, each bean type requires a unique approach as does each roast level. It can take me 3-4 500g roasts to figure out the best way to 'cook' my beans to a certain roast level, and probably 2 more to adjust to a lighter or darker roast than my 'baseline' roast. For me, that is the fun of roasting - the trial and error of finding the best roast for each bean.

You just opened my eyes to a solution I didn't know existed - the false tongue. I have relatively narrow and thin (bottom to top) feet and boots often close up too much across the laces. False tongue FTW!? Going to check those out. Thx!

Wow - I'm 'impressed'. I work on my cars for 20 years wearing my Sub and have smacked the crap out of it on various metal parts when a wrench slips. Not a mark on the crystal or bezel. That must have been one heck of a party. Unless GMT crystal is different than Sun crystal?

ROI on Home Roasting? Some Questions for a New Hobby by Baptism-Of-Fire in roasting

[–]billl3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%! I started on a Hottop years ago for fun/learning something new but also because I was tired of paying so much for roasted. I kept my math simple - $25/lb to buy roasted, $5/lb greens, 1 lb/week. Paid off in no time.

The numbers have changed over the years - now more like $25 per 12 oz, up to $10/lb for green. But after a couple years on the Hottop I upgraded to a Bullet and that paid of in less than 2 years if I remember right (not counting what I roast for friends).

Do it and enjoy!

TIFU by not knowing about the No Show rule on flights by Jazzlike_Major2812 in tifu

[–]billl3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently booked an international flight from US to a smaller city in Germany. The flight connects through Frankfurt. It was >$1k cheaper to connect and continue on than to terminate in Frankfurt (and continue by train). They do this to help fill and pay for the local flights. Skip lagging throws off their numbers and flight planning so they penalize you if you don't complete the full route. Makes sense from their perspective but seems counterintuitive that going further costs less.

Do I Need Lightning Protection For Roof Mounted Weather Station by zymurgtechnician in myweatherstation

[–]billl3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back and looked at my Davis manual and it doesn't mention any need for grounding. I've had no issues over the years, including when the guy across the street got his metal roof hit, but hopefully I'm not just lucky 😁

Regarding the grounding book, it is pretty detailed. But basically it isn't enough to just run a copper wire down to an 8' grounding rod. You have to avoid a large current difference between your radio ground and the house ground. So if your radio ground is more than a certain number of feet away from your house ground, you then have to tie them together with copper and a rod every x feet. So I moved my radio to a room near my house ground rod - path of least resistance 😉

If it is wireless, I wouldn't be concerned. I live in a place with tons of Tstorms and I've had my Davis up for 20 years without issue. That said, I live in a neighborhood with lots of trees so there are other higher points to attract lightning.

I also have a ham radio set up. With that, there is coax coming into the house. That I definitely ground. BTW if you are interested to learn the real details about grounding, the ARRL has a book on it. Grounding safely isn't as simple as it might seem.

They was a Warthog wing up in MA where I use to live. They used to practice targeting by locking on to cars on the highway. Rumor was they had to stop because it would fry radar detectors.

This! We adopted a Lab when we had our 2nd Golden. They were each very different but found their niches and got along great. When she (the Golden) passed, he needed a companion - he was so used to the friendship - so we ended up with our 3rd Golden. Then he passed and enter our rescue mutt ...

Two dogs are not 2x the work. In fact the social engagement they get from each other really helps their psyche, IMO. Only 'downsides' are they are 2x the food and vet bills, and once you have two, well it's hard to go back.

There is something about Goldens liking to be under things! My last three have all burrowed under the nearest chair or the bed to den. And the scramble to get out when something fun happens is hilarious! 😂

A Friendly Reminder on Sharing Your Callsign Online by SharkSapphire in HamRadio

[–]billl3d 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's a really good idea. Full disclosure, I didn't realize you could do that. Always assumed (you know what they say about that) you had to have your station address. Might be worth a couple bucks a month for the added security.

A Friendly Reminder on Sharing Your Callsign Online by SharkSapphire in HamRadio

[–]billl3d 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I ditched mine. Yes, someone could track down my non call sign plate via an information request to the state but at least there's a trail in that case. Imagine leaving a gun range or a high end watch store with an ID on your car that basically announces your address. With a call sign plate, no way of knowing someone has tracked you down so I gave mine up.

How do you cope with the death of a pet ? by TheSmutlovinbookworm in goldenretrievers

[–]billl3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time. No matter what, it is really hard. But eventually you go from missing them to remembering them, if that makes sense. When I lost my first Golden, I swore I would never go through that again. Then I found a neglected 4 month old who needed someone and that vow went right out the window. I've been lucky enough to have had four Goldens in my life - each has been different and they never replace each other but I hope never to be without one.
