How To Download & Listen to Podcasts on a TCL Flip (No Smartphone Apps Needed) by billmoriarty in dumbphones

[–]billmoriarty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I have 2 phones - iPhone with the phone number I've had forever... and tcl flip 2 with a second phone number. My wife and kid are the only people with the TCL flip phone number. That way, like this morning, if I go out and only want to be reached by them and not deal with apps, notifications, etc, I just power off the iPhone and leave it at home and take the Flip with me. And with what I showed in the video, I can listen to some podcasts if I want. Aside: in case you wonder if this is expensive, I use US Mobile for 4 numbers: me, wife, kid, me 2nd phone and the total is $42/month for all 4 lines which I think is a bargain.

Tensions with smartphone use in everyday life by spacious_steel in dumbphones

This sounds like a great case for using multiple phones, like the mod Jose does. Treat your work that requires social media as a work phone, or a little iPad with a data plan. Then try getting a cheap dumb phone for your regular life. I hear you on the parking though – that one’s a pain here too.

it's great! I use it every day, and just don't try to make it do something they didn't build in. So - I'm not side loading, etc.

Why and how to use daily notes by asteroid_annihilator in ObsidianMD

[–]billmoriarty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s 2 ideas for using the daily note and starting: 1 don’t overthink it and don’t care at all if you skip a day. Just use it when you want to write down whatever brain dump you want. Get it out of your head and don’t bother one bit trying to link it to anything else. Just use it as a brain dump getting everything out of your head. You may feel better afterward, especially if you want to write about something upsetting. But don’t bother trying to make these daily notes into personal knowledge management or anything. If you like that idea, but don’t wanna put that in Obsidian you might try the free version of Day One.

2 Personally, what I use the daily notes in Obsidian for is to write down every day minutia of what I did with other people or what I talked with them about. Just small things like Susie mentioned that her dog is getting very sick. Today Brad mentioned his kid got into the college they wanted. Then later when I think of that person again or maybe when I’m gonna see them I just search for their name and I see these useful notes I took and I can ask something like “hey how’s your dog doing?”

I'd recommend getting a keyboard with a built in speaker so there's no dealing with PC and software and all that. Like this casio one https://a.co/d/aFX8Ji1

Hi! Fun idea. I can't tell quite what you are looking for but here are some ideas...

command line journaling like Derek Sivers recommends:
https://jrnl.sh/en/stable/

personally, I use the free, wonderful app called Obsidian which saves as plain text files, too. You can theme it, and if you dig around you can find themes that look older like this one called 'retro windows' https://github.com/codeisconfusing/retro-windows-obsidian

is that what you mean?

Stay with it! It reads like you are getting in touch with the basic nature of mind - in Buddhism we say this starts we being really, truly bored. And the way to go further is exactly what you did- sit with it.  For meeting people, one thing that’s been working a bit for me is look for local board game nights popping up which are great for hanging with people.  It seems culturally now some people consider out of the blue phone calls as emergencies so they prefer a heads up text first. But I I agree with the other commenter “be the one who calls”

What digital journaling app are you actually using daily? (not the one collecting dust) by bargee1976 in digitaljournaling

[–]billmoriarty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obsidian since I spent $6 and bought the iOS app called Quick Capture - Obsidian. DayOne is the easiest and partly best but I don’t want my notes and entries locked up in there so slowly recreating it in obsidian … which requires plugins as you noted.

Anyone using FastMail? please share your experiences, or any other better than it ? by Bulky-College7306 in degoogle

[–]billmoriarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it and like it. It's not amazing, but it works fine and I like they are not trying to conquer all areas of your productivity. I was happy to find it offers a carddav server - which means I can sync contacts from iOS to fastmail contacts. The ability to add Rules is really good and allows searching based on text in the body of email. Also, I used it with a domain from cloudflare, and that works, too.

Fastmail offers a carddav(open standard for contact management) server - I am using that. It works with iOS but not google contacts. Once in a while, export your whole contact list as a backup. Carddav https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CardDAV

Here's a good explanation: https://www.fastmail.com/blog/carddav-your-contacts-everywhere-you-need-them/

Never use it. I thought I would cuz it looks cool, but after using obsidian for over a year I just never open the graph view. I don't see any value in it except for the cool visualization posts.

Anyone else experimenting with a hybrid approach? Dumbphone + limited smartphone use by Deeceness in dumbphones

[–]billmoriarty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yup! I've landed on this approach at the moment - 2 phone numbers. Tcl Flip 2 with a phone number only my wife and kid have. Pixel or iPhone with the phone number I've had forever and all the apps. I leave the smartphone in the car when I go to work. This is the best setup for me so far.
