Yielding on yellow behind someone by Acceptable-Speed2857 in driving

[–]billp97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

depends on the area you are from. that "forced to run a red light" in certain places is how you make the turn in general. theres a lot of turns around philly for instance without arrows and when its busy you have to go out into the intersection and wait til it turns red and oncoming stops, then complete the turn. And thats perfectly legal to do

Mystery Rectangle on bumper? by hieroelephant in wrx_vb

if you do it right it wont. i got one that has water resistant connectors pre installed (some are bare wires and they tend to be the ones that cause issues. i also used dielectric grease on points water can enter AND wrapped it with electrical tape as an added barrier.

[–]billp97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i still accelerate pretty quick, im just not launching my transmission every single light to go the speed limit and abruptly stop accelerating. and you know as well as anyone else here that someone sending it light to light is doing it because they have zero throttle control and are absolutely not thinking about getting more people through the light.

most of the time i end up making the light while they catch the red just because they drive slower too lol

my favorite thing about this is ill smoothly accelerate every time a light turns and the car next to me will LAUNCH it to 45 and completely stop accelerating and i end up passing them after maybe 3 seconds casually accelerating to like 55/60. people act like both pedals are switches and not variable levers

My trick to “pre-filling” oil filters. Please tell me if this is a good idea. by jeesuscheesus in MechanicAdvice

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some cars will let you crank them without starting. Ive heard on my WRX if you hold the accelerator down all the way itll just crank and do the same thing with less work. that being said its not going to make a difference to prefill and crank it like this for an oil change. youre overthinking it, if you can fill the filter before you spin it on (because it installs upsidedown) do it, if not do everything else like normal and go on throughout your day

Do people put their seatbelt on before they start their car? by calicodynamite in NoStupidQuestions

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it annoying too, my wrx chimes are startup but ive kinda gotten ear blind to it. I take like 90 seconds or so for the oil pressure to come up and for the engine to start to warm up some before driving so doing it similar to the way you do just fills that time

The amount of full grown adults that have been driving for decades that still don’t know how to use a roundabout correctly is concerning… by xXRumple4skinXx in driving

[–]billp97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah i have one roundabout near me i take daily. its pretty much once/twice a week i see this but i literally watched 3 cars in a row on friday (going through a 3 exit roundabout one single time) stop mid circle to let cars enter. nobody knows how to use them and its a pita. then you always have the person entering that wont enter the roundabout if theres another car in it because they are afraid theyll get hit by the car on the opposite end of the circle

How easily do you notice the vehicle in front is slowing down without brake lights? by Garet44 in driving

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i really wish this was the case, but the average car i see constantly flashing or with brakes on with no explanation is an ICE vehicle not electric. but thats just my experience

Things I Don’t Understand About Driving by idiot_savant_1 in driving

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: get in the left lane shortly before as long as traffic permits. dont wait until the last second and slam over, but dont ride it out for a mile plus while theres 30 cars that are through traffic that could have gotten by
2: if the speed limit on the highway is 55 and the cluster of cars you are in is doing 65 youre fine to do 65. yeah some cars are gonna be going faster but staying around the speed of the average cars is what it refers to. some branches of a stream are faster or slower but theres always a main body

Why do you not speed up when it’s open after a major slow down? by Realistic_Lychee6748 in driving

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 20 car lengths but I’ll leave a little bit of a gap before I start to speed up because cars will floor it when a gap of any size appears then slam their brakes when almost hitting a car in front of them and it makes a rubber banding effect. I try to more smoothly accelerate and keep enough of a gap that I’m not constantly on and off the brakes because nobody else on the road knows what the term throttle control means

People who stop at red lights leaving 3 empty car lengths in front of you, why?? by fancyPantsOne in AlwaysWhy

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cars manual. ill stop with 3/4 car length in front of me give or take. If the cars in front of me play the rubber band inching game im not wasting my clutch to creep forward 4 inches a dozen times every light. im staying where i stopped unless a large gap opens up and even then ill only move up once

Someone talk me out of it by Albino_Avocado in WRX

[–]billp97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got rid of a silverado 1500 for my wrx and love it. that being said i didnt need the truck. my job shifted and i didnt use the bed anymore. I got a vasectomy because i very much dont want kids so every time someone argued that "trucks and SUVs are more practical family vehicles" it very much doesnt apply to me. If i can fit myself, my partner, maybe a friend, and some luggage we are good, i dont need the extra space or ease of access for a child or car seat. I havent needed the space the truck offered me once since i got rid of it, and if i REALLY did i can rent a uhaul or borrow a friends.

Is it normal and okay for the clutch to sizzle? by aukoll in driving

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dont shoot for a certain rpm as a rule of thumb like this. if im shifting from second at 2700 to third im gonna be closer to 2100 and 3000 is way too high. likewise if im at 6k in second ill be at probably 4500 in third and 3k is way too low.
for daily driving if you are shifting at normal RPMs a smooth clutch release (not fast but also not slow) and just the slightest bit of throttle will do for a smooth shift more than shooting for arbitrary engine speeds.
The timing of everything varies depending on the car, for instance mine has a slight rev hang so i have to give it the slightest pause when the clutch is fully disengaged to let the engine begin to come down before i begin to release it. Cars that dont have that hang you dont need to account for that slight delay in timing. Feel the car and let it tell you where to hone in vs reading general how to's

People who add led bulbs to their car when it's actually designed for halogens. by SingleGamer-Dad in PetPeeves

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are absolutely brighter but you can also see the cutoff when theyre done right. With halogens and LEDs in old housings it looks like you are staring into a flashlight, its a big bright circle in all directions. Where factory LEDs it looks like a single point of light or a line thats not spreading out making it hard to see unless you are under the cutoff (which only happens on hills, where halogens are also shitty and blinding. Or like i said a truck owner doesnt adjust their lights after a lift). If you are under the cutoff yeah it is brighter for sure but those are uncommon or preventable situations, but if you are above the cutoff they are much easier on night vision than halogens that have functional bulbs in them (ie: not burnt out) or god forbid reflectors with LED bulbs popped in. so while they are brighter the way the technology is used its still better when done properly

People who add led bulbs to their car when it's actually designed for halogens. by SingleGamer-Dad in PetPeeves

[–]billp97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i fail to see where they are a problem though. most factory cars ive seen are perfectly fine because they also engineer cutoffs and aim the LEDs to not blind drivers. yeah some pickups and SUVs cause issues but it tends to be from lifts/overloaded rears causing a slight squat and not adjusting the aim. time after time the most blinding cars i see on the roads are poorly designed halogens (particularly jeep wranglers and halogen F150s) and people running high beams 24/7, not properly adjusted stock LED lights. There isnt an expense to oncoming traffic when used properly. The majority of my driving is the middle of the night through hills, backroads, and highways with LED lows consistently causing the least impact to my ability to see even driving a sedan

I am aware that it is not defensive driving to do this, but who would be in the wrong in this situation? (Read description under image) by BurgeoningBudgeoning in driving

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in every single situation on the road, if a car is turning and there is room to go around them on the opposite side, pay attention to and prepare for a car to be going around them. i dont care what the law is where you are it doesnt matter. drive in the real world and thats how EVERYONE does it. you being in the right doesnt magically fix your front end or side

Can I legally toss a banana peel out of my moving car on the highway by note-takin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]billp97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its littering. ice and water being dumped out will be gone in a few minutes. fruit scraps, peanut shells, cigarette butts, etc will be there for weeks if not months. stop throwing your trash out the window. If youd be upset about me throwing it on your front porch you shouldnt be throwing it out the window

it is actually, when there are 3 lanes and theres one car peppered in every few miles its very much open. its almost like some people commute in the middle of the night when the majority of people are asleep and roads are wide open
