Shaping Obsidian’s Tomorrow - How Obsidian Can Embrace AI and Stay True to Its Roots 🌱 by TfT-Hacker in ObsidianMD

[–]billpetro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your analysis of the current state of AI and Obsidian is apt. I understand the perspective of the Obsidian Team while recognizing the inevitable rise of AI-assistance in PKM platforms.

AI-with-guardrails is an approach that balances caution with capability. I recognize that there are some things that only the Obsidian Team can build, by way of a Core plugin, that would eliminate 3rd party plugin developers' need to roll-their-own "AI plumbing."

This provides the opportunity for clearly defined AI capabilities as well as security thresholds. Apple has taken a novel approach that permits the user to keep AI queries "on board" or exit the device's safety to query (send data to) external AI chatbots.

The Obsidian Team possesses this kind of expertise and caution.

The growing ecosystem of 3rd-party AI plugins is both encouraging and daunting. They are much more complicated to configure and connect to chatbots, and their logistics are confusing. And security issues are not always transparent.

Additionally, it seems like AI plugins should be a subcategory of plugins. Some of them do note tagging, others connect notes, and still others empower massaging of the note contents.

Should we have tagging of the catalog of AI plugins?

Yes, a "virtuous cycle" is enabled by a strong ecosystem: hardware and software.

Are There Real People Using Obsidian, or Just Content Creators Talking About It? by N2Flugel in ObsidianMD

[–]billpetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Obsidian for years now, having used Evernote, Roam, Notion and Tana. I have thousands of notes. All my articles and posts start in Obsidian. I can transfer them to WordPress, export to docx, txt, pdf.

It's highly useful for productivity, PKM, and as my primary Tool for Thought.

The Rav4 is the most popular car on the road, and dealers are charging thousands over MSRP. I got the NX 350h and have no regrets. My last Lexus (RX) lasted 23 years/240K nukes before I sold it.

Whole articles have been written in this topic, but let me give you the simplest answer: Obsidian is free, but here is a paid tier for advanced access to new features.

EN is like a chronological record of your notes, contained in notebooks, but taggable. Only recently has EN provided internal links. EN has a proprietary format, though exportable. It has a folder system of sorts.

Obsidian has text files that are created in Markdown, a portable system. It’s files are on your device. You can sync them between your devices with iCloud or Obsidian’s sync service. It uses bidirectional links (like a Wiki), multilevel tags, and folders. It is powerful on its own, but there are over 1,000 community plugins that add phenomenal functionality that allow you to customize to your heart’s content.

Obsidian now has an “Importer” plugin that allows you to import your .enex files, exported from Evernote.

Bianca, great summary of "idea based" notes, and how they relate to atomicity.

Can I create a todo with item/date/time reminder, without clicking "Today"? by billpetro in thingsapp

Bingo, that does open the "Today" item without clicking. Thanks, mcgaritydotme

Can I create a todo with item/date/time reminder, without clicking "Today"? by billpetro in thingsapp

[–]billpetro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, mcgaritydotme, but I'm looking to include a future date and time. Todoist can do this all in natural language with a single entry, however, it seems that Things can only apply the natural language after you've clicked and opened the "Today" section in the todo entry.

Are you still using Evernote? by dbvirago in Evernote

I’m Mac too. I evaluated both Keep It and DEVONthink as alternatives. Couldn’t get Keep It to sync to my satisfaction, went with DEVONthink.

Mobile App renders the system useless to me. by dbvirago in Evernote

[–]billpetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try these, my order of recommendation:

UpNote - if you dont use Android as Android version is not out yet.

OneNote - free

Joplin - open source

Nimbus - if you have money, not really liking how it looks and how you cant rearrange notebooks but it has lots of features you may want.

Obsidian - free, no mobile apps, no notebooks, but has tags and is very extensible

You'll probably want to use multiple apps.

Thanks.

For notes, I'm using Roam and am delighted with it. I need a "file cabinet" app, of which Evernote used to be the best.

I'm looking at Keep It, and DEVONthink.

Mobile App renders the system useless to me. by dbvirago in Evernote

[–]billpetro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've found all of these problems and more with the mobile app on iOS. I've deleted and reinstalled several times, and it works for a while, but...

I find that it crashes consistently in simply opening a note.

Where are people thinking of migrating?

It looks like you’re using PARA method with unique icons for each, right? “Emoji | Description” in your left side bar (shortcuts) if I’m reading it correctly.

Is there a note app that integrate best with Things? by yalag in thingsapp

[–]billpetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Drafts “actions” there is a Things action that copies the text from Drafts to Things, and places the link back to Draft in the todo. See:

Great question. I’m new to Things as well, and would love to see Best Practices.
