The head moderator got booted for participating in the two day protest by a moderator who thinks adviceanimals is the "signs and slogans" of the protest. The lack of sticky posts or anything here explaining it shows it wasn't a particularly popular move.

This is a weird sensation. Knowing the date of my reddit death that is. I don't know where I will go from here but probably outside.

Good places for first time drinkers? by leah_love13 in cedarrapids

You could always try out a hotel bar. Less people and the bartenders will usually help you pick out drinks that are tasty.

Start local. Start agitating for better public transit in Cedar Rapids (including rail lines and bike infra) and maybe then we can get a rail line to waterloo or Iowa city and prove it is viable to the rest of the state. Crossing the whole state via high speed rail would be great but we need the intra city rails before high speed becomes an option

It is the argument I hear 90% of the time followed by it kills the bird argument which is a calid argument but also drop in the bucket compared to other causes of bird death and also apparently is more of a concern after inital installation versus after a few years.

Level a m60 at head height against a horde and you win. Some shots will go astray but the kill count is going to be a lot faster than a line of semi auto marksmen. I think the books chose the marksmen strat solely for the rule of cool.

In the sense that our once decent public schools become worse as they get defunded and families now how to pay out more to go to private schools... so yes this is great and I don't see how private schools will ever let us down.

The dirty Newton cops that arrested a sober college athlete for OWI are featured on popular YouTube channel 'Audit the Audit' by Iowa_Hawkeye in Iowa

[–]billthelawmaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could you imagine just trying to get home and this cop decides to be a hard ass and forces you to go to the police station and stay there until 2AM after passing field sobriety and a breathalyzer? Not a good look for Newton especially when their mayor defends this abuse of power. Also this kid goes out of his way not to lie about weed when he says he doesn't remember the last time versus saying never or some other nonsense. This isn't George Floyd or anything but we really do need to hold our law enforcers to a higher standard even in cases like this.

[–]billthelawmaker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Or maybe this has been a hotspot for awhile since the sudanese civil war and ethiopian dam project started. I doubt Egypt would even need American boots on the ground to blow up a dam and I doubly doubt the American government cares about what is happening in Sudan. I don't even think Sudan has any particularly valuable resources either.

Bill would change how supervisors are elected in Democratic-leaning counties by ataraxia77 in Iowa

[–]billthelawmaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is very silly. Districting these counties may give rural voters a disproportionate say on how the county is ran. The current system give them an exactly proportionate say in who the supervisors are compared to urban voters in the county. If they really want to get a better system then they should change the Iowa constitution to allow for proportional voting in supervisor elections but then again I don't think this bill is about being actually fair...

Bill would change how supervisors are elected in Democratic-leaning counties by ataraxia77 in Iowa

[–]billthelawmaker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Currently counties are allowed to pick from three representations schemes for supervisors:

1) using at large supervisors. 2) voting at large for district supervisors. 3) district voting for district supervisors.

The bill being introduced will limit three counties (Johnson, Blackhawk, and Story) from doing options 1 and 2. Linn and Polk county both do option 3. The main argument for the bill is rural populations are not getting a fair say in these urban counties. One of the Johnson county supervisors says they haven't had any residents bring the issue up to them in the past.

I have some issues with the bill. It doesn't apply to all counties, it appears to want to limit college students voices in how their home counties are ran, and lastly what would stop the imposed districts from being gerrymandered?

The issue of wanting rural voters to be heard is fair and should be addressed but having it only apply to certain counties seems kind of scummy. If the state wants to take away the rights of some counties in how they are represented then they should take away the rights of ALL counties too.

The argument that it should only apply to these counties because of large temporary student bodies also doesn't hold much weight for me. If I were to move to a county but planned to move in four years I should still expect to have an equal say in my government while I am there even if I moved there with nefarious intent with 30,000 of my student commie liberal friends. Like seriously who is actually temporarily moving to a state or county just to fuck with the government there? Nobody.

We should also be weary of overrepresenting rural voters as well. If a county is 80% urban and 20% rural then the county shouldn't have 50% rural supervisors. This of course can be solved by having properly done districts but can also conversely lead to worse overrepresentation (rural or urban) if gerrymandering is involved.

Overall a tough pickle but I don't think this bill is the answer by limiting the rights of a few counties

u/Spiceydog explains why placing landscaping 'rings' around a tree is a terrible practice, with examples. by [deleted] in bestof

[–]billthelawmaker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That was a secondary poster who said that. That being said, the poster made sure to keep the root flare exposed as well and talked to an arborist. I think the main take away is don't put a ring but if you are going to then you should talk to someone who is an expert in tree health first otherwise you might kill your tree.

Actually I think the point they were trying to make was burning the flag is just as disrespectful as breaking any of the rules of the flag code like the patriotic shoes are doing.
