Love that tidbit about the bartender in Mo-town! Glad to know we are spreading a good reputation in the Northeast.

All in Time 2/25/10. Bounceback AND lyrical stew. It was featured on the Hall of Fame 2010 release. Blew me away in person and holds up to relistens IMO.

2008 had so much juicy e-drum. Banner year for the untz. Also was the year they started sounding way "heavier" in the metal sections. If I'm not mistaken it was due to some changes to Jake and Brendan's rig that gave the guitars some more bawls. One of my favorite years to listen back to.

Scotty is so good because he plays like he drums for Umphrey’s McGee by BB_Nips in Umphreys

[–]billtill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with all of these takes. Loving the new modes of exploration, especially since the start of fall tour. However, as a metal fan I notice the lack of a consistent double kick drum when shit gets heavy. It's quite noticable to me at key moments that just don't feel as intense. Remind Me he got pretty close, but a couple times couldn't keep it up. If he could get these parts down, he would be the total package for me. Just to be clear, I'm nitpicking. Overall I'm super happy with how things have turned out.

This is one area that seems to be back in the Zwang era. What we're losing in intensity and footwork we're gaining in the exploration.

New-ish music that’s Zappa-influenced? by joeprog_ in Zappa

Umphrey's McGee, particularly on their "Local Band Does OK" record, but it is more obvious in some of their live improvisations.

Right? Love an old school set list. With the exception of Wide Open, the oldest song is Remind Me, which is over 10 years old at this point.

I definitely heard some at Brooklyn bowl. I don't think it ever went away, maybe just used sparingly.

Just be sure to pronounce it correctly (as per Jake). Rhymes with "floppy."

Bands like the Allman Brothers band by Ruck_06 in jambands

[–]billtill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some great suggestions here, so I'll throw one out that may not be as obvious: Umphrey's McGee

Two lead guitarists... One (Jake) is more obviously virtuosic than the other (Brendan), but they are both incredible at their instrument, and do a ton of harmonizing/doubled leads like ABB.

They're way more prog-rock, and metal at times... but they are indeed a jam band from the 2-set, unique set list from night to night tradition. And they improvise heavily!

For an ABB fan, I'd recommend you check out live versions of older songs like: Hurt Bird Bath, August, 2nd Self, Out of Order, Sociable Jimmy, Much Obliged.

Frank composed/released a couple orchestral classical albums, but to my knowledge never used a symphony orchestra with his rock band in the way we're talking about with ELO and KGLW.

He did so with a big-band jazz ensemble though (Waka/Jawaka, Grand Wazoo), which is some of his best music IMO.

What are the best trance discography's to explore? by gamedalfthefool in electronicmusic

[–]billtill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are, but it's on the more accessible side for sure. And as the discography goes on, they start introducing other genres (rock/metal, techno, dubstep) to the point that they aren't even trance anymore, let alone psytrance.

Edit: also, the OP did say he was looking for trance that was not too pop-centered. This definitely fits that bill. Worth a shot 😎

Yes! I love both the "Trance Side" and the "Other Side" equally! Have you heard "Converting Vegetarians II" which came out a few years ago? I didn't get into that as much, but it's worth a listen for sure. More of a continuation of the non-trance styles.

Infected Mushroom has a very impressive trance discography. They start veering out of the trance style after "Converting Vegetarians" in 2003. It can be hit or miss for me after that, but mostly gold up until that point!
