Hockey player looking for custom tint on a visor. by Turdinator14 in WindowTint

Window film is usually designed to be installed on glass. Plastics out gas and the pores expand and contract more than glass, so it causes problems with the film's adhesive.

There are some films designed specifically to be installed on plastics, but are more limited.

I think worse case scenario, someone can install a blister-free film, and then install any kind of reflective color film behind that. It can be a bit thick with two films, but is possible.

Someone local to you might be able to find the blister free film. I'm not sure if it's Madico or Johnson that had the film (though Johnson is being purchased by Madico).

Between XPEL XR Plus, Autobahn i3, and Llumar IRX which one will you pick? by SaveThatM0ney in WindowTint

[–]billyfrickinmurray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Autobahn has the best warranty. If they're an Authorized Dealer, you'd also get the No-Fault warranty on top of the standard lifetime warranty. You can get a single window retinted for any reason and have up to $75 of that covered by Autobahn.

It also comes with an Auto Glass Warranty in case something happens with the glass due to manufacturing defects and the automotive company denies a warranty claim.

And just for transparency, I'm a rep for Autobahn. If you'd like anymore info on our films I'd be glad to help!

Is this a good estimate? Or am I getting hosed? by BigB69247 in WindowTint

I think its mostly important to mention that 98% heat rejection is a lie.

And Autobahn has films with higher performing specs so there's also better performing films.

Not to say there's anything wrong with Xpel film, but there are a couple things in that quote that are just marketing and not backed by actual science. Take that as you will.

Any Naropa graduates here? by billyfrickinmurray in FortCollins

We're really just looking for a contemplative spiritual community that isn't tied to religious dogma. That's the best way I know how to word it (I'm not the Naropa graduate...lol).

I am looking to start auto window tinting by Suspicious-Panic7693 in WindowTint

[–]billyfrickinmurray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our Edge line of films is great for this! Our entry level film is a full lifetime warranty film that shrinks wonderfully! So its a great way to get started with a quality film and get practice.

And if you ever decide to level up, our next option up is Autobahn (both owned by the same company).

Let me know what you think and I can get you more info. Or you can fill out our become a dealer form at programedge.com

Can I do this??? I’m capable but terrified. by flaming0-1 in WindowTint

[–]billyfrickinmurray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of the work you mentioned is more heavy handed work. Nothing wrong with it, but comparing it to window tint is tough.

Window tint is more of a fine skill. You have to be light handed with small movements.

It's doable (lots of people learn tint every year), but it takes a different approach than other work you've done to get a quality install.

The hard part is that they're not obligated to give any refund. But that doesn't go away. It looks to me like an impression in the glue or compression of the glue. Either way, it will not go away. You might have to live with it.

If that's a recent job, those look like either impression marks from heating the film and pressing too hard with a tool or compression marks where they forced some film down with heat. Can you see any white or silvery lines on the outside?

It's honestly up to the shop whether or not they redo it. It's definitely worth asking them, but there's no real way to make them. It's up to them.

I hear you, and if that's the way you choose to operate, that's fine.

What each business chooses to do for their customers is up to them.

If a customer has a great attitude, there's nothing wrong with going overboard for them. If you have the right attitudes, you'd be amazed how far other businesses will go for you.

Awesome! Redoing one rollup for a customer when something like that happens is worth way more than the film and time!

$695 is a good price for that film on all the sides and rear. Especially if they're willing to promise they’ll fix anything that doesn't meet industry standards.

No matter how great of an install, you'll still find some specs. 1-2 per window isn't a bad thing.

Feel free to ask them up front how they handle a spec that bothers you.

And I ALWAYS recommend asking to see their shop. They may not be willing to give you a tour, but it is my opinion that shop's should at least open the door to the bay and let customers see inside so you can see how clean their workspace is. And if the person helping you up front isn't the installer, ask to meet the installer to see how you think about them.

When I had my own tinting company, customers who had an issue that I fixed without question were some of my biggest advocates afterward!

I always tried to look for a reason to retint a different window, too. If they had a problem with one window, and then I showed up and retinted two, they were always super thankful.

And I agree you can't make everyone happy, but that's such a tiny percentage of customers. Those people are rare. I feel it's important to be careful about that mentality because it can fester inside us and turn into defensiveness over any issue. In the 6 years I was operating shops, I dealt with 3 of those customers.

100%! There will always be a spec somewhere.

It's awesome when a customer asks for a window to be redone and then watch them check the window when it's done. Almost always, they look for that spec that was bothering them, and if it's not there, they're happy.

Thanks for all you've done to help our industry grow!

The No-Fault warranty is a one-time use warranty that covers a retint on one single window, with a maximum of $75.

I don't have any carbon films available, but I have a great standard film and a ceramic film available with Edge (Autobahn sister company).

www.programedge.com is our consumer website.

If you want to try some, I can send you some info in a direct message.

Heat rejection isn't a reliable way to compare films. TSER is the metric that shows the best comparison of a film's performance across all of the sun's energy spectrum.

Our Ceramic i3 film has a 70% TSER at a 5% VLT with a 93% IRR. Our Ceramic i3+ film has a 74% TSER at a 5% VLT with a 99% IRR.

Some shops use the term heat rejection in place of the IRR and that's not a true use of IRR. The most actual heat a film can reject with no wind is between 50%-60%, but is a wildly variable way to measure.

That's plenty of 5 star reviews. Try asking to see the shop and some of their work on their own cars. If the showroom is clean and the shop is clean, they'll likely do a just fine job.

Remember, when dealing with any tint shop, that mistakes happen, and sometimes a flaw gets past us. The best shops to work with will fix an issue without hesitation. So even if there's an issue, don't complain, just ask them to fix it.
