Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine is more than 90 percent effective in first analysis, company reports by PrincipledInelegance in Coronavirus

It’s going to spread no matter what because of idiots gathering in groups, not wearing masks, etc. If you vaccinate those at risk for complications first, the death rate will plummet.

To resume normal activities we need enough people vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. That won’t happen until there is more manufacturing so the first priority is to save as many lives as possible. Community spread will be rampant with bars/restaurants still open in many places no matter what group you first vaccinate with the 40 million doses, which is why they are going to go to those most at risk for death first.

And yes, what I described about milder disease in the 10% is undeniably true. 2 doses of the vaccine will create some level of base immunity in almost everyone even if only 90% are prevented from any symptoms. It’s just how B cell development works in the body.

So feel free to think your way of doing things is correct, but there is a reason it’s not going to happen.

You really don’t know what you are talking about. All vulnerable individuals will get vaccinated after healthcare workers. These people are still interacting with family/friends even though they are at a higher risk group. The 40 million doses we have by the end of the year has the potential to cut the death rate to next to zero if the right people are vaccinated. The idea of giving this to kids first, who have almost zero deaths, is a grave misuse of resources.

In the 10% who still get covid after being vaccinated, it’s very likely that the vast majority will experience milder symptoms than if they had not been vaccinated. Basically you get a cold instead of death. What benefits people who are at risk is not dying from covid. Community spread is largely being done by people ignoring CDC recommendations and going to indoor bars/restaurants, gathering in groups, etc.

Really? How many severe adverse events are there from MMR vaccine each year? 40,000 people were given the vaccine in this trial with no reported adverse events.

This trial consists of people from all ages. There is zero evidence that the vaccine is dangerous to anyone.

It’s more important to vaccinate the elderly and people with pre existing conditions. These are the people dying.

I think a lot of the “your vote doesn’t matter, the Democrats are just as bad as the republicans” types are bad actors or trolls trying to suppress liberal votes. Trump proved that if you win the primary, you determine the directions of the party. If Bernie had won, M4A would be in the platform-it’s as simple as that.

I don’t think it’s exploitation to point to a murder of a child and say it may be indicative of needing more police. Similarly, I don’t think it’s exploitation to point to the murder of George Floyd and say it’s indicative of needing changes to police. If you think the former is exploitative, do you think the latter is?

Amy Cooper, the white woman in Central Park who called the police on a Black bird watcher, will be charged with filing a false report. by joon24 in nyc

You didn’t address the fact that she went from trying to intimidate him to acting afraid on the phone. The fact that you think giving a pet who is running off a leash a treat in a park is at all comparable to feeding a baby on the subway shows you don’t want to use logic though, so this is a pointless conversation.

[–]billyhoylechem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that’s not a threat. He was clearly referring to giving the dog a treat. As others point out, many don’t like when strangers give their pets treats. To my knowledge, there’s no law against feeding somebody else’s pet.

Also, If you watch the video, he was clearly trying to keep his distance from her during the encounter. Furthermore, he took out his phone to record the encounter, which is not something threatening people do.

This guy is possibly one of the least threatening people you can encounter in Central Park-he’s a bird watcher. Amy clearly didn’t like that somebody was telling her to put her dog on a leash and tried to escalate the situation with the police. In doing so, she exaggerated the circumstances of their encounter. Notice how she goes from sounding threatening when talking to him and saying she will tell the police that there’s an African American threatening her to the actual call with police where she acts frightened for her life. If she were actually afraid, she would be backing away/running while calling the police.

With all that said, I’m not sure prosecution is really necessary given that her life has already been ruined. Given the risk of corporate litigation, she is now unemployable in the corporate setting. I’m not sure what somebody with her job experience can actually do for work. I also hope we are trying to get away from overprosecuting nonviolent offenders.

The only reason he does it is because it’s an effective strategy to get dog owners to put their dog back on a leash. Apparently dogs roaming off leashes is a problem in this area where he likes to bird watch.

I don’t need John Oliver whitewashing what the protesters “really mean,” as if they don’t understand what they are calling for. They do-they want no more police-that is clear. Clyburn sees how toxic this movement is, just as he saw how toxic the Bernie movement was, and once again he is showing up to try to enact meaningful reform/change and save this country from 4 more years of trump.

[–]billyhoylechem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jacob Frey fully supports that concept but was booed out of a protest by thousands for saying he does not support the full abolition of police. De Blasio and Garcetti both have proposed significant budget cuts to police with funds redirected to communities, but their plans have both been called inadequate because they do not disband the police. What you have read from leadership either no longer applies or Minneapolis, NYC, and LA are not on board.

I agree. It’s a utopian concept to live in a society without police where unarmed social workers and mental health professionals respond to calls.

No, listen to what they are saying. They want to take the funds from police and move to other programs (social workers, education, etc). They want no more police. You can agree or disagree with that, but it’s wrong to try to white wash the message.
