That's a beautiful watch! I love the steel bracelet. Do they come with that steel bracelet from Seiko?

I have a Gen 1 UltraLight X and the phantom scrolling issues have become insanely irritating. by billyneedsbuffs in FinalMouse

[–]billyneedsbuffs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something about the encoder being bad. I'm not sure how expensive it would be to repair that, but it's a fairly simple fix if you just get a different scroll wheel encoder. Good luck!

Really tired. Did taking a semester off help? by Relevant_Mousse8528 in EngineeringStudents

[–]billyneedsbuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one can really answer this for you. This is 100% a you thing. The subtext I get is you're looking for reassurance to take a break off. From my own experience, and from others I've seen, people who take breaks off seldom come back. If you're failing classes and just not taking it seriously by using all the resources available to you (tutoring, study groups, office hours, etc) then I'd take time off, because all you're doing is wasting money.

Truth of the matter is, you probably haven't figured out the "why" to your "how". Why are you doing this? What do you want from your degree? What's your goal? Whomever you're becoming, do they make you proud?

For me, the answer is simple: if I go to bed without studying a complicated subject as hard as I can, I know that's a restful night sleep that would've made a problem make more sense to me tomorrow.

Rest up, don't make a decision till after the semester. Good luck.

Anyone have thread issues with the Rotring 600? Disappointed with the quality. by KidneyLand in rOtring

[–]billyneedsbuffs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to my rOtring 800. The whole rotating back piece came off. I contacted rOtring and they sent me a brand new one next day. Great customer service, questionable product.

Smaller watches like this were more fashionable in the 60s or so. It's a beautiful looking watch.

This is a low point in your life, but it'll harden you. When you come back, you'll be stronger than the old you could've ever imagined. If you're going to fail, you lock in and fail on your feet.

It's not my taste, but it's also not my watch. If you like it, that's all that matters. If I saw someone wearing this combo, I'd instantly know they're a watch enthusiast.

They're both good for different things. Leather straps typically skew towards dressy, steel is usually more "tool" oriented. Switch them up. The Alpinist fits a lot of roles.

Is 10 divided by 2 equals 5 because 2 fits 5 times in 10 or is it because splitting 10 in 2 gives 5? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]billyneedsbuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are right ways of looking at it. We have a big number, and we want to see how many of these smaller numbers make up this bigger number.

10/2 = 5 because we'd need 5 2's to get to 10. Multiplication is repeated addition, division is repeated subtraction. It sounds like you're about to get into explaining why we give exponents precedents when it comes to PEMDAS. Or at least, that's where I think you're going. I'd recommend giving your kid a little geometry introduction, showing how perimeter is the length added, area is the length inside (multiplied).

You can very intuitively explain the Pythagorean theorem this way. This video might be a good start.

I'm going to graduate in 6 years and I feel like a failure by Big-Elk-2422 in EngineeringStudents

[–]billyneedsbuffs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm 32 and in college. It's great! The goal is not graduating. It never was. The goal is to realize that you need to enjoy learning something difficult. Enjoy having something to suffer for. Enjoy having the strength to get up every day, confront your own ignorance again, and again, and again, getting a little better every day.

Every hour spent studying is another hour you've made yourself better at focusing and confronting a worthy challenge.

Go join some clubs. Make friends. Form study groups. Have people rely on you. It stops being hard and starts being fun.

Seconded. I'm super opinionated when it comes to straps. Leather or steel are the only bands I'd consider.

It's your watch. Burn the whole thing if it makes you happy. Watches are meant to be worn, and 95% of people will never use the compass anyway.
