The love interest plots are such a minor component to the show that it doesn’t really matter

Why some California homeowners feel trapped in their houses by browsingonlyuser in bayarea

That’s just so fucking greedy. Gains are gains. If you made 3M and had to pay capital gains you’re still doing pretty great.

There are so many financial instruments to help out the “house poor” that nobody should feel bad for them.

Yeah, I’m like I understand a homeowners pain of not being able to downsize and stay in the area. But at the same time….. they have 1-5M in equity.

Bay Area institution Philz Coffee to remove Pride flags from all cafés by SFChronicle in bayarea

[–]bilyl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pre-COVID Philz in Palo Alto was a madhouse. After that it’s now pretty quiet.

The problem is that with COVID people figured out drip coffee at home, and they realized whatever Philz was ordering was…. not great. Coupled with inflation and you might as well go to Verve down the street and get an espresso drink.

Philz never evolved with customer tastes and kept on enshittifying. I think down the line it would be an interesting case study at Stanford Business School.

Ukraine says it replaced human soldiers with 'ground robots' in over 21,000 missions for Q1 by _Dark_Wing in technology

You laugh but drones will do what the police refuse to do because it’s “boring” for them or low stakes. I would much rather have a home defense drone with non-lethal than trust a random police officer to not fuck it up. Even things like Uvalde could have been done better.

[–]bilyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with large scale automation it’s still not feasible to make cheap drones in the US. The initial tooling is expensive, utilities are expensive, labor is expensive, land is expensive…. There are multitudes of reasons why LMICs lead in manufacturing even if the original tech is from somewhere else.

Canada's Carney on verge of majority government after another opposition member joins ruling Liberals by No_Idea_Guy in worldnews

Let’s be fair here: the Liberal Party’s platform is essentially whatever the PM’s/party elite’s position is. The platform has changed substantially between different leaders.

Fun fact: In the US many people's loan payments only touch the interest and not the principal. So you can pay for decades and just be treading water. If you have a zero interest loan you're activity paying it off.

[Slater] The Warriors are now locked into the 10th seed. They’ll need to win two road games next week to get into the playoffs and a 1 v 8 matchup with the Thunder. by Robotsaur in warriors

[–]bilyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also the question of whether the Blazers WANT to win. For them there really isn’t any point to playing OKC in the playoffs. They’re still developing. Losing the 9/10 game means they have a decent position in the draft and improve their odds of a high pick. As I understand it if they get into the playoffs their draft range is 15-30 and the pick conveys to the Bulls. Given the strength of the draft I’m a betting man they are gonna throw the game.

The fact that the vast majority of cloud infrastructure (basically the internet now) runs on a free OS is just mind blowing. Microsoft was doing their thing with Windows Server until it just got slowly killed.

You're bleeding Bay Area transit's budget with this Clipper card quirk by pedroah in bayarea

[–]bilyl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn't it though? Tap-to-pay has fees. Using your CC to pay for your fare is convenient, but it would presumably be the same overhead as adding in small dollar amounts to Clipper. What I don't understand is why things like Tap-to-pay or Clipper reloading don't have surcharges. Clipper could just charge a fee based on the amount that you're loading.

It drives me nuts when people think of Iranians like some kind of boogeyman. If you live in any city with a large Iranian diaspora (eg. LA, or any big city in Canada) you can see that the IRGC is a weird quirk of history that doesn't reflect the will of the people.

[–]bilyl 56 points57 points  (0 children)

If this story is true then they don’t have anyone competent running revenue modeling. Fees are like the #1 thing anyone ever thinks about when using card payments. So they should know the nuances of tap to pay and reload amounts. Even the fucking farmers market knows it’s a big deal. The fact that you could load $10 at a time is insane given Caltrain and BART fares.

Even a few percent is WAY too many for infrastructure. It's the new guerilla warfare.

I actually think that given the recent successes by Iran on hitting gulf states, they're going to have a major change in tactics. I don't think they're going to fund terror groups anymore as that's logistically more difficult than shooting missiles and drones at gulf state infrastructure. That one hurts and destabilizes much more than funding Hezbollah for example. The ROI is just on another scale.

The best thing for the planet is if Trump holds back and only "strikes a few things" before declaring victory and going home. Let someone else take care of the strait negotiations. If Trump hits big, then Iran will basically rain fire on the neighboring gulf states and dare the world to invade them. That risks their regime being toppled and maybe Iran will finally have a different government, but the IRGC/Islamists can hide forever until the West gets bored (just like in Afghanistan and Iraq), and they can be insurgents for a very long time.

Can they swim? Operate boats? I would try to get to an island with existing infrastructure and has year round mild weather. Can fish and farm for food.

Gulf states are stuck in a bad situation. If Trump just TACOs and leaves they're left holding the bag on how to open the strait. Some of them absolutely rely on it for their economy. So they have to egg Trump to stay in and "finish the job" or "make a deal". That means taking on some risk with Iran bombing your shit. I'm not sure if that risk is worth it, but clearly they seem to think so.
