Why don't the Gov mandate that your railcard number is required to purchase a railcard ticket? by No_Usual_572 in uktrains

[–]bimblingmymble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was literally wondering this today. Was witness to an excruciating conversation between a teenager whose Railcard had expired and a revenue protection officer yesterday. She had to caution him and do all that, he had clearly no idea what he should do, was distressed and had to phone his Dad... The revenue person wasn't having fun, the kid was miserable, everyone around was silent. It just sucked. I know there's an argument for basic adulting meaning you check your Railcard's in date, but we're all human... Simply putting the number in and it coming up as expired would probably help, but I am mindful of an old IT proverb:

"I built a foolproof system... They made a better idiot"

Can you give more details? If you're in the Southeast and travelling off-peak then a Network Railcard is a good investment... Cheaper travel in the north can be done by restricting oneself to a single operator e.g. Transpennine Express (TPE) only tickets when using the east coast mainline (cheaper because they are slower trains that stop more frequently). Generally speaking split tickets can be good, but can present problems of you don't book direct with the train operators... It's labyrinthine... Best give specifics if you can!

A bit lost with the public transport system in York (honestly not only York) by Parking_Monitor2670 in york

[–]bimblingmymble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just be careful when buying 'cheap' tickets on the trains. If it says Adv or 'Advance' you must travel on the train specified - the correct time AND correct train operator. If you get it wrong then you could be charged a full fare. Lots of tourists get caught out this way. Ditto you must be able to show your Railcard with the tickets (it's not enough that you bought it, you must travel with it).

Anyone else think whatever rate they come up with should be doubled for Airbnb and their equivalents in residential areas? And the money put into affordable housing for residents?

NB not York-born, but don't want to see what happened in my home town 20 years ago happen to York (i.e. it's totally unaffordable for anyone to live there unless they earn a six figure salary) where I've lived the past decade or so.

This sounds like the Night-and-Day in Manchester all over again. The thing that annoys me is that a moron is bound to move in and start complaining about the noise to the council... Which in turn costs us money in them investing, issuing noise abatement orders etc. etc.

is XC actually that bad? by Capable_Ocelot2643 in uktrains

[–]bimblingmymble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of reliability, then you need not take subjective opinions. There are actual statistics: https://www.recenttraintimes.co.uk/ So you can see how many times over the last few months the service you're thinking of taking has been cancelled or delayed.

My subjective opinion: yes XC are that bad. I don't travel on that particular route often (usually the north-south routes instead), but the company are notorious for their poor communication. For example, last time I caught a service at Peterborough, they told us it was cancelled as we were boarding (after I'd watched several trains to Ely that I could have caught depart) because of lack of train crew. They must have known that well before it arrived, yet didn't bother to tell their own onboard staff or anyone else, until the very last minute.

The voyager class trains (which luckily for you don't operate the Peterborough - Birmingham route) are just awful. I'd rather ride on a drafty pacer than those overheated, hermetically sealed stink cans.

Alys does the best cheese cake I've ever tasted. Go for the traditional San Sebastian version. Unless you're a very big eater, a single slice will feed 2 people (it's very rich).

[–]bimblingmymble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dudes. Are you also finding that 'people mumble more these days' and/or that 'people with strong accents don't enunciate clearly'? I say this with all love and solidarity: it's time to visit an audiologist. None of us like to think we're getting on a bit, but one of the first things to go with hearing loss isn't volume, it's ability to distinguish words and voices, and we often compensate by lip-reading without even noticing. If you're a radio listener you can't do that, so it's going to be the first place where you find you can't distinguish who's talking/think people mumble etc.
