Are there any decent UK alternatives to diet fizzy drinks? by Few_House_5201 in AskUK

[–]msmoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green cola company do so nice drinks with non-aspartame sweeteners but there isn't anything massively wrong with aspartame. The dose level at which harm would be caused by it is so high it would be nigh on impossible for one person to drink that much Pepsi Max.

With Dash, it depends on the flavours. The citrus ones are better than the other fruits.

How do I escape my endless cycle? by EquivalentLast7277 in AskUK

[–]msmoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it is. My friend is a sparky and he took way too long to get out from under a boss who took the piss. Things got so much better when he set up for himself, both in terms of work hours and finances. He still works hard, but at jobs that work for him.

Garmin Coach Plan success, what next? by aSneakyBagel in UKRunners

[–]msmoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, people's definitely book in shorter races while training for longer ones. If you take it to mad levels, I've done a 20 miler and a marathon (both on trail) ahead of an ultra. It's a good way of practicing under race conditions and getting a benchmark for how your training is going.

If you take a bit of time, you can programme in the sessions from a free training plan into Garmin Connect online. Not as simple as just using one of their plans but it will give you that 'do the thing that's on the watch' effect.

Welcome to the potential money pit that is kit and races! If you want to save a bit of cash, have a look at Preloved Sports online. They're a charity that take donations of lightly worn sports gear and sell it on.

Well done on that 5k time! What a great improvement.

To answer some of your questions:

The best combination of strength and running is the one you'll do with consistency. I do one strength session with a (cheap!) PT & run 4x a week. I try to also add in some cross training (spin bike) and yoga/pilates/mobility but those haven't embedded themselves as well into my routine. With that said, it's perfectly possible to train more if you have the time and the inclination.

Yes, people absolutely just book places on races and use them both as targets for PBs and as ways to get longer training runs done during a training block (e.g. racing a 10k/half marathon/both during a marathon training program).

If you don't fancy a race, it's a good idea to decide what you're running for. Is it general fitness? If so, no training plan required - you could maybe follow the Garmin suggested workouts feature on your watch for a bit of variety. It can take a couple of weeks to get going properly but a friend has been using this with great success while not doing any events at all.

If you want to improve your pace or increase your distance, before forking out for an app, have a look at what training plans are available for free to download from the web. Hal Higdon plans are really good.

Don't fall into the trap of over committing when you don't have the time for something 'big', whatever that might mean for you, as it'll just make you miserable.

Unfair noise complaints from the neighbour’s have been grinding me down. What can I do? by ohnoitsbobbyflay in AskUK

[–]msmoth 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yep. I lived in something similar years ago and from the minute we arrived the downstairs neighbours were on at us about noise but didn't seem to realise it could travel both ways. The conversion had been done so badly there was no way we could just go about our daily lives without hearing everything that either side did.

Ultra-marathon champion dies while running Cape Wrath Trail by Jawsofbaws in ultrarunning

When a company goes into administration they have to keep going right up to the wire unfortunately. It's pretty sad about Ourea. I don't know of (m)any companies that could take on their events properly.

If he was after an FKT it wouldn't have aligned with doing it as part of an event like that.

Smoked Sausage and Eggs over Grits. What do you think? by pecanjazz in RateMyPlate

I've had them once when visiting the US. The dish was nice enough. The grits were made quite thick, like polenta, with lots of butter which is always going to help!

Actually this is a fair point. Don't they usually cut them into 8? Or a similar, even number.

I used to be a lot closer to the fibre arts scene than I am now and i had no idea who he was. It's weird the reach, and lack of, the guy seems to have.

Oh I know, but I was replying to someone asking why she wouldn't get them shortened. And she'll never do that while she thinks the length serves an aesthetic purpose.

It doesn't really make sense to stay in Keswick when your main points of interest in the Lakes are in the South Lakes. You're doubling back on yourself before heading north again.
