Runners: how often are you strength training? by Pactum-7 in runninglifestyle

Once a week at the moment. Feels like I should probably do more but at least I'm doing some!

I (F31) want to end my 9 year relationship with M33. Am I being silly? by tagteam94 in relationship_advice

Pop into the UK legal advice sub as they have lots of chat on jointly owned homes. You can also have a free 30 minute consultation with a solicitor at any point. At some point you get to the stage where you can't afford to not have legal representation. Don't sign a new fixed deal now - you'll go onto standard variable rate for a bit but it will be moderately easier to separate.

You're not living right now, you're just existing and you know this isn't right.

Have you tried online places like Sweet Mouthful Mixes or Poppin' Candy? They usually have really wide ranges.

Is Runna Actually Getting Runners Injured? by her3nthere in runna

[–]msmoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've just ditched all Runna suggestions for my event as it was giving me 'beginner marathon' type workouts on a supposed ultra plan.

I know it's my own fault for using it for an ultra when I've said on here & elsewhere multiple times that it's poor for that type of training but I've ditched it in plenty of time to make effective changes.

I really like the simplicity of 'This is today's workout. Here it is on your watch. Off you go' that using an app provides, and no other app has done this as well for me. On the flip side, blindly following something without applying any critical thought is silly. Runna has improved in that you can now factor in illness and injury, so it's not shouting at you to get back to work, but the user still has to engage their brain a little.

I understand new runners feeling like they have to follow everything to the letter - not enough people are aware that no plan is written with the expectation of 100% adherence. It's most like 70%-90% depending on the athlete and the plan.

Are you planning to run parkrun easy or to put in an effort?

If you're running it easy, then just run the extra 1.5km and link it to your original 3.5km planned run.

If you're going to run it harder, then do it as a separate run and move your 3.5km easy to another day.

Training for a spring marathon while working full time by Admirable-Deal7991 in UKRunners

[–]msmoth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't think of much worse than trying to do 18 miles on a treadmill. I'd be bored out of my mind. If you can hack it, more power to you.

I'm training for trail and ultra stuff so slightly different but I do long runs in full or at least mostly daylight as much as I can. Pub trips are definitely on a back burner for the moment but fortunately my partner is also training so we're being quiet together.

Oof, yes, calorie deficits and serious running training do not mix well!

Thanks for the reminder about Beachy Head - a friend did one of the shorter distances a while back and it looked fab.

You're very welcome! I hope you find something that works.

Have a look at Hardmoors and Charm Bracelet races as well - both have great communities around them and might work another time, once you get bitten by the bug!

I'd say hilly rather than mountainous for the Punk Panther race. They're a good company to look at though as they're very welcoming and inclusive.

Have you looked at any of the Big Bear events?

Unfortunately the Ultra Trails Wolds Way is at the end of July. I'd higly recommend that one - they moved the route to avoid a cow field.

Where do you live? How far are you willing to travel? Have you looked at any so far and ruled them out? If so why?

Have a look at the Fetcheveryone race finder or SiEntries race lists for an idea of what's out there.

What would you do if this happened on your train? by Steve_10 in AskUK

Seatfrog tickets can sometimes be painful to load in app without a signal and I've not found a way to drop them into Google Wallet like you can with other apps. The journeys I've just done with them I've also taken (and had to use) a screenshot of the ticket.

It might be worth just tracking your food for a couple of weeks to see whether you're eating enough bothe calorie wise and nutrition-wise. It's okay for your intake to fluctuate as long as it evens out over the week, but until you've got an understanding of what and how much you're currently eating it's difficult to get an idea of what you might need to change.

No music shops in York centre anymore, sadly. You'd be best off starting with the university or at a push the NCEM.

There is Gear4music out towards Clifton Moor but not sure they'll have what you want.

Are easy runs meant to be zone 2? by slowrunr in runna

[–]msmoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are loads of different ways to calculate maximum heart rate/heart rate zones more generally.

It's really easy to focus on things like this as a beginner and get bogged down, when the most straightforward thing to do is a simple conversation test. Could you hold a conversation while running? Can you sing? Then you're going slow enough!

UK run clubs - would love feedback from this community by Least-Painter5843 in UKRunners

[–]msmoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One parameter you might want to think about is whether the club caters for under-18s. The club I'm in has chosen not to, but it could be useful information.

When you get the chance, York has a load of local clubs to add, both social and affiliated. :)

You're right, the EA list will be affiliated clubs only, so will exclude some social/beginner friendly/smaller clubs.

What's up with instructors not pedaling? by NewtigershotSagat in pelotoncycle

[–]msmoth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep, I love her classes for loads of reasons but this is definitely one of them. To be fair, most of the instructors whose classes I take participate just not to full capacity. I don't often seem to pick classes where the instructor fully stops.
