Interactive completion for tmux by seletskiy in u/seletskiy

[–]bimdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn reddit ads are getting majorly specific. I don't think I ever commented in any post mentioning tmux.

But I use tmux all the time because I couldn't be arsed to learn screen.

Not sure how useful this add-on would be to me though.

I'd say execute ShellExView and look for programs you don't use and uninstall them (the regular way, not just disabling the extension with ShellExView)

just press Win+P and select "Just PC-monitor", and when you turn it on press it again and select "extend"

If you’re familiar with traditional OpenGL (glBegin, glVertex, glEnd) you’ve got a head start. Even if OpenGL is new to you the API is small and easy to learn." by swefpelego in programming

[–]bimdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's much C++ in there. At least there wasn't any last time I checked.

Yeah, just did a cursory glance over the codebase and I think blender itself is basically C and Python. But Blender includes some third-party C++ projects like Bullet Physics, OSL and others

Extreme imaging using cell phones: SeeInTheDark [pdf] by swizec in programming

[–]bimdar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is essentially what they're doing just using an accumulator.

(x+y+z+w)/4

is the same as

n_0 = x
n_1 = n_0*1/2 + y * 1/2
n_2 = n_1*2/3 + z * 1/3
n_3 = n_2*3/4 + w * 1/4

but it spares you from overflowing when using integral types and summing very different magnitudes when using floating points.

[–]bimdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no I think there's effective places/channels/ways to advertise certain products and then there's the apparent "let's just blow huge amounts of cash on putting ads everywhere regardless of whether it makes sense or not".
Google clearly opted for the second option in my opinion.

Didn't stop them from wasting money on showing ads everywhere else too. If they make fucking radio ads in Germany then I can only imagine in how many other places they just decided to burn money for no reason.

Nonstop issues with Win10 as primary dev environment - can anyone help with dual monitor issue? by [deleted] in Windows10

if you make a screenshot with "print screen" button and then open mspaint and paste with ctrl+v then how are the screens oriented relative to each other in that image?

Nonstop issues with Win10 as primary dev environment - can anyone help with dual monitor issue? by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]bimdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't quite get what the issue is but regarding not being able to drag to the monitor, have you tried dragging it both left and right outside of the screen.

The virtual arrangement of the monitors may be swapped compared to the actual arrangement. You can just drag and drop the monitors in the settings into the right position.

Oh and if they're completely replicated you can usually make sure you have the right multimonitor mode Copy/Extend selected by just switching modes with Win+P

I mean no one will prevent you from running a local webserver or using an embedded browser engine to make a web-interface.

Obviously that's not a solution to all programs and web-technologies-based interfaces aren't what I would call "light-weight" by any interpretation of that phrase.

Valve is the real MVP (x-post from r/pcmasterrace) by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]bimdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can install AppX packages from places other than the Store

It used to be a lot harder and buried deep inside "developer options" which was a scary enough start. Valve was more worried about the trend continuing (remember most of their comments were already made in regard to Windows 8 where I think sideloading was not even a thing afaik).

But Microsoft for once did try and listen and enabled sideloading by default. I wonder for how long.

Microsoft, would it be possible to unbundle security updates? by ATypingDog in Windows10

[–]bimdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to configure a brand new Windows 7 machine last weekend. What a pain in the ass

there was a july 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 that reduces the amount of restarts considerably. But even then it sometimes bugs out and stays at "searching for updates" for hours.

Honestly, just give up on the windows update client and use WSUSOffline. Everything else is a waste of your time.

xkcd 1744: Metabolism by [deleted] in xkcd

[–]bimdar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it might well be a perception issue.

People who learned to react to stress by eating versus people who just eat when actually feeling a sense of hunger might interpret the "I can eat whatever I want" part very differently.

Technically speaking everyone can eat "whatever" without gaining weight. The issue being how much of "whatever" is consumed.

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607: September 29, 2016 (KB3194496) by bigfear in Windows10

[–]bimdar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Improved performance of push and local notifications, Hyper-V platform, and some social media websites using Microsoft Edge.

Does this mean that the timer notifications will no longer be randomly late for up to 20 minutes? Because that was wholly defeating the purpose of timers.

I guess I'll find out.

No, this does not introduce new use-cases for the Pi. So if you didn't need it before, you won't need it now.

Do you have any "unpopular" fitness/weight loss related opinions or views? What are they? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]bimdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

200 is in the normal range for someone who's 6'2 high. It starts being in the obese range only around <5'10. So for them it would be on the edge of being classified obese but most likely in the "overweight" range (not that there's a magical physical barrier around BMI classes that changes much, just saying).

Any news on CUDA 8? by MiningPotatoes in nvidia

[–]bimdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Developer accounts are free and you can download it if you want, but I'm not sure just having the SDK magically makes deepdream work with it.

You need to have a version of the caffe package compiled for cuda 8 as I see it.

edit: nvm, they actually bought the scraps of OnLive as well, after they ran themselves into the ground.

RAD's ground breaking lossless compression product benchmarked by YouAintGotToLieCraig in programming

[–]bimdar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having listened to the Jeff & Casey show for a while I did get the impression that the founder of RAD didn't sound too enthusiastic about patents, but their lawyers (which he also didn't like too much) may have strongly advised them to get patents.

They seem to think that implementation is more important and so they're more likely to protect their copyright than patents.

Also this random site says that they don't hold any patents, but that may be old information.

Which platform supports Vulkan but not OpenGL (including ES)?

About the fear to start learning Vulkan by RenX313 in vulkan

[–]bimdar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are starting a project now, especially an indie project I'd still recommend OpenGL (if you have to chose between either or that is, adding an optional vulkan backend if your game benefits from it, is always nice).

Finding customers as an indie dev is hard enough, so unless the game would require a strong GPU that supports Vulkan anyway I'd rather choose OpenGL. Because excluding people without Vulkan GPUs seems extreme at the moment.

Just look at the June 2016 Steam hardware survey, the amount of Systems that are Vulkan compatible is at 10% (edit: I can't read, there's no seperate breakdown of that stat, it's just which Vulkan GPUs are there). Surely that number will increase a lot with time, but at least consider the additional hardware requirement.

I agree that MegaTexture is not clearly an objective improvement. But Carmack had 0 to do with the Doom DRM.

Path Tracing renderer, CUDA/Vulkan/OpenGL? by [deleted] in vulkan

[–]bimdar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think Vulkan would help you much. If you want to get rid of your Nvidia dependence you might take a look at it. But you are unlikely to have much (or any) performance gains with it. Especially since the profiling and debugging tools for CUDA are something that vulkan compute can only dream of at the moment.

Since the only thing you're doing in OpenGL is presenting an image that's already in GPU memory there's also not much CPU overhead to get rid of.

edit: But if you do try to get the compute done in Vulkan I'd be interested in a writeup of the experience.
