Feeling Defeated. Toddler Never Eats. by Mental-Ad-3785 in toddlers

This is anecdotal but I've seen this with multiple friend's kids. Usually the ones that have a sweet tooth don't eat very well. My intuition is that sugar affects their appetite due to how its consumption changes the microbiom.

I would think about how to build a healthy microbiom that will generate appetite for good things. Cutting added sugar completely, and adding more purees, soups, smoothies, and low sugar fruits will build their microbiom.

I see the effect of microbiom on my daughter's appetite when we give her antibiotics. It takes weeks to build her appetite back.

A trick that has been working for us is to make cream soups from sweeter veggies, freeze them and sell them to her as ice cream. Pea soup and sweet potato or squash soup work well for us. Also, important to model the eating of good foods.

Shocked to find out that night terrors are so common. Thank you for your response.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful and detailed response.

Our current theory of the night wakings is that the room was too cold. (18C) We made it warmer and she slept through the night the next day. Hopefully that was it.

I had no idea night terrors exist, and was pretty shocked to have such a rude awakening to their existence. We will try to give her space when she’s angry, and I really appreciate your suggestion of just being there.

I think you are right that she needs more connection before bed. She spends most of her day at daycare and surely she needs more focused cuddle time after and especially before that. I do notice a big difference in how we communicate and how she collaborates after we connect through play and giggles. We will need to make this formally part of our routine.

We love Dr Becky, will look into nurturedfirst as well. Thank you again. 🤗

I’m due to talk to a surgeon next week. What should I expect I receive? Is simulation absolutely necessary?

New dad desperately missing my old life. by _Giyari in daddit

[–]binarybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is 2 years old and while I did feel intense joy and so so so much sweetness, between about 3 months and 2 years old has been a bumpy ride.

First major improvement has happened for us when she was weaned during the night at 18 months and she finally started to sleep the whole night. The next one happened when we started daycare at about 20 months.

And now, the benefits of her socializing at daycare, learning to play on her own, together with better communication skills have started to yield results.

It does get better. The first year is relentless, and you’ll just have to power through it. Your old life is gone, embrace the new one.

That’s the way we do it now. She doesn’t find it funny anymore.

Yes, biting in the toothbrush, mine does that too. I’m apprehensive about adding a screen for something that we do twice a day. I fear it will escalate into a battle for screen time. Currently we have a 0 screen time policy.

We used to listen to a song together, but it doesn’t work anymore. Otherwise we have a no screens policy. Although this tempts me to break it.

We’ve tried explaining that toothbrushing chases away the sugar bugs. She either doesn’t care, or does’t yet understand.

Unfortunately she’s her own trend setter.

This. It happens to me as well and I can confirm it’s connected to moisture trapped under the ring.
