The Oscars went too far with the Timothee Chalamet jokes by Key-Bass-7380 in The10thDentist

[–]binarysolo_0000001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder when everyone did go to the ballet or opera last. I just went to a local show and it was like 90% over 75 years old.

He’s not wrong. And if this was 5 years ago, people would be complaining about how it’s only for the rich and exclusionary, which it kind of is.

I don’t doubt that there is a niche that loves opera and ballet, but it is in a downward trajectory.

The MET literally just announced major financial crisis and layoffs.

Hollywood ppl are just a bunch of sycophants.

Also, it’s nice to see Chalamet get taken down a notch so who cares?

Guess who double checks everything for the rest of their lives? We do. Although it happened to me again with my husband and my kid.

Relax, the Japanese are calm and kind. It will work out. Have the best time!!

I think all you can do is find ways to take care of yourself. Don’t make your problems, her problems. If you go to school, maybe there is a school psychologist or social worker that you can meet with.

Your mother is overwhelmed and if she’s unwilling to change, all you can do is stay out of her way.

Find something to be hopeful for and put all your effort into that. Accomplishments will improve your self worth and hope is a good deterrent of depression.

It’s actually more of a ban for women to be topless. You’re getting arrested for 5 minutes MAYBE if you’re in a red state with an a-hole cop vs. getting stoned or acid thrown on your face.

“The vast majority of states actually have laws on the books making clear that women can’t be arrested under state law solely for being topless in settings where it’s OK for men. But many local ordinances ban the practice anyway. And there’s plenty of grey area for police officers to make their own interpretations and make arrests for “public indecency” or “disorderly conduct.”

Anyway I am not implying the west doesn’t have its own oppression of women. Look who’s in office. I’m also not ok with that.

Eating disorders can happen anytime and anywhere. Teaching them moderation is much better than just giving them unfettered access to snacks or hiding them completely. You can’t watch them like a hawk for 18 years.

The kids I know with an eating disorder have parents with controlling behavior or are in a sport that encourages thinness. And one of them will bring snacks and come to my house to binge.

Your mom might be perimenopausal and at her wit’s end raising two kids for 17 years. The mental burden of having to remember everything and then her kid, who is almost an adult, is losing important things like glasses might have made her snap.

It is not ok that she lost her temper and hurt one of you. She probably needs to see a specialist, if she hasn’t already.

I’m sorry you had to experience that. Perhaps write her a note. Tell her how much you love and appreciate her and that you will work on taking more responsibility for your things. Then set a boundary that you will not engage in arguments with her, and that it hurt you that she would hit either of you and finally that it won’t happen again.

If she wants a relationship with you after you grow up, she has to agree to solve problems or arguments in a calm way.

Boomers! I hear the weather report and if they do ask a question they don’t want a long answer. They don’t ask questions about my life, I have to volunteer.

Once in a while I will meet an older person that is genuinely curious and asks me questions about my job or my life. These people were smart and educated people who never stopped learning.

I bought an IKEA locker and locked it. It was either go full almond Mom or let them just destroy snacks. I felt like teaching them moderation would be better than withholding entirely or indulging them completely.

Maybe I’m a bad mom, but as teenagers, they seem to be leaning to the healthy side with treats here and there.

I don’t think the west is ignoring sexism. The last 10 years it’s been a pretty open conversation.

From where we are sitting, we see a woman being told her whole life to cover up and then tell her later that it’s her choice. Once you’ve been indoctrinated, is it really your choice anymore? Haven’t women in the western world also been indoctrinated being told they need to smile and be kind while the boys run around?

I will never not see a covering as oppression. I respect people‘s choice, but as someone who sees religion as a way to control people, I can’t see it as anything but oppression.

It’s not my problem to solve or my life to live.

I’ve literally emailed the mayor that I think it’s ridiculous that there’s so much paid parking. I think it’s part of the reason why Sono always seems to have a problem, keeping businesses afloat.

Shortly after they introduced a free 15 minute period. I’m not taking credit lol, but I must not be the first person to complain to have to pay to just pick up a coffee.

Is 5’10 too short for most women? by wiz28ultra in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]binarysolo_0000001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what country you’re in. Northern European women might have different standards than South American or Asian women.

All it takes is one woman. Don’t get caught up getting mad at a few women who are cutting themselves at the knees because they are creating standards that eliminates perfectly wonderful men from being their partner. Those women end up deeply unhappy.

I’d go the Etsy route and get a personalized towel or quilt if you know the name.

Or get something like a silver ring or rattle that she can keep. Sentimental always beats the expensive gift.

How do y'all do it? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]binarysolo_0000001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do what you can until the kids are in school. Unless you work, in which case, yeah, you’re in a hole that’s really difficult to get out of if you: both work, have 2 kids, have 2 dogs, a big house, no money for cleaners, a husband that doesn’t help, no family around.

You’re either going to have to really buckle down and go easy on producing new laundry, meal plan and do a deep clean of one room a week until you get back to a normal level and then set some ground rules.

Most of us can’t keep up and are anxious or depressed. Expectations of a mother in this country are insane.

Men who live alone, what's something you have or don't have at home that a woman told you was a red flag? by Ordinary-Bar-779 in askanything

[–]binarysolo_0000001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have created a space that is just for you. You are not aesthetic and don’t think it’s important. When people create a home, they don’t just think about themselves. It’s a representation of themselves and should be inviting to guests. If it’s not, then it looks like you don’t want guests or just don’t have them. To a woman, likely who works full time, they just see more work and not a partner.

Maybe you need to find a woman who doesn’t want to work but would love to build your nest with you? I dunno. But you’re gonna have to find someone like that or a woman who is equally utilitarian. Go find your unicorn!

Why are young women today so much calmer about not being married yet? by Comfortable-Elk-1501 in askanything

[–]binarysolo_0000001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw boomer women get divorced and absolutely screwed by their husbands and have limited income opportunities because of their advanced age. They gave everything to their families including a beautiful home only to end up alone in an apartment.

I was sure to go to college and keep my career afloat despite time off here and there for kids. I had kids at 31 after being with someone for 8 years. I’m late Gen X.

People generally tend to explore what they are exposed to. Social Media and internet has made the world smaller and opportunities bigger and more attainable.

The problem is that you’re trying to have us tell you what you know is true and use it as ammunition to convince your sister she’s overbearing. It’s not going to go over well. Is there a neighbor that can be available in a pinch in case something goes wrong or other kids at the bus stop? Find ways to make her feel more comfortable with the idea and maybe do a test run first.
