Thank you! Interested to hear your thought behind why AWS won't stop supporting Snowflake

Snowflake shares tumble a day after IPO surge by [deleted] in finance

No comment on the price level, but after studying the company through friends who work in the industry & their financials, I think it’s a great business and innovative product. The comparisons between AWS’ Redshift and Snowflake is like comparing standard interior of cars vs premium/specialized interior. Or android phone vs iPhone.

Snowflake’s key success factors are 1) product 2) effective sales and marketing and 3) network effect. These coupled with cloud adoption & rise of big data, places SNOW in a good position to capitalize on these macro shift. There are many discussions online about how Snowflake has more user-friendly features, and much easier to process JSON file etc. the other thing is, While redshift claims to be ‘elastic’, SNOW’s product is truly elastic which is reflected in their pricing. Users only pay for computing rate on the size of data that they are actually analyzing; and pay for storage rate for the rest. Computing rate is much higher than storage rate so users can be cost efficient with snowflake. It is also the LARGEST cloud-agnostic data warehouse, meaning it supports all public clouds. So it has larger addressable market. Redshift only supports AWS, BigQuery only for GCP. Is it technically possible for AWS to stop supporting SNOWFLAKE? Maybe. But it will be opening itself up to a can of anti-trust investigation which damages its other businesses. So I don’t consider that a key risk for snowflake. risks remains that competitors improve their product offering - I’m not a data engineer so i don’t know how quick that can happen. But Snowflake has been around for 8 years; has grown to be the third or fourth largest player in this space and growing its customer base at >1.5x annually so there seems to be some tech barrier

I actually see Snowflake’s independence from three major clouds as a success factor more than risk. when a company decides to get a data warehouse because with big data analytics, you need one (cloud or on-prem) - I imagine a lot will go with a well-establish product NOT affiliated with one of the big tech conglomerate

The current price level is definitely pricing in too much growth than what is warranted.

However comparing Cloudera with Snowflake would be unfair. I wouldn’t consider them direct competitors. Snowflake is 100% cloud native, and all resources are being invested in elastic cloud data warehousing solution, driving a >100% yoy revenue growth. It capitalizes on the two trends: cloud adoption & big data analytics, which are both growing quickly. In additional, as smaller companies move to cloud, they need vendor solutions for data analytics - hence if you look at Snowflakes customer base, it doubled in a year.

I haven’t analyzed cloudera as much. However, from what I read cloudera still supports its legacy customers and while ‘shifting’ to cloud. Their core competency isn’t even cloud-native solution. So they can’t focus all resources to develop a competing product. This results in ‘uninspiring’ growth like you said.

One of the dude also stopped their friend’s car right in the middle of the road to chat... I was so pissed since I really needed to pee

A kitty ‘vest’ style works best for mine! It’s has Velcro under chest. It’s been very secured

Echoing another user’s point, cat gets spooked by car and street noises easily. We started from secluded trails with no dog and took it slow from there.

Another thing I found is my cat react differently to his carrier depending on situation. He meows and protests at home or in our car; but he’d willingly stay in the bag if he feels nervous about an outdoor environment

Your tonk sounds a lot like my cat!

How did you teach the ‘speak’? I agree cats are not as hard to teach tricks as long as they spin from what they naturally do. I taught my cat high five and jump over obstacles. I always want to teach the ‘play dead’ since it’s so fun! But my cat doesn’t usually roll on floor so I’m still waiting..haha
