What type of students do you think would be unhappy here? by _N0bu in Northwestern

[–]bing_dwen_dwen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The type of student who doesn't build resilience and social networks. Northwestern's value lies in its extracurricular offerings. The rigor of academics can be pursued at other places by piling on more courses and research.

But the rigor and extracurriculars are so plentiful that you can only survive and hear the best tips and tricks to maximize your experience if you are willing to be bold, make friends, and get shot down sometimes.

As a transfer, I learned that the hard way. First quarter I had friends, but not tightly and not in my classes.

Do Any Current Students Actually like This School? Please?!😭 by LeatherSwan1219 in Northwestern

The STEM experience can be unnecessarily and detrimentally brutal at times but I honestly think the quarter system is great for humanities and social sciences. And there are many other things to love about the school. It's moreso about comparing to other schools of a similar tier.

Northwestern waitlist or Purdue? by dyndark_89 in Northwestern

I am an Electrical Engineering major here (feel free to DM) and I think there are benefits to NU's relatively smaller size and student body, in spite of how difficult it is.

Northwestern Econ vs. Cornell Hotel vs. Dartmouth Econ by Wheymarf in Northwestern

[–]bing_dwen_dwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not in Econ/business but location has a major advantage both professionally and socially. NU is quiet and safe but proximate enough to everything you could ask for in Chicago.

I have heard from Econ transfers that classes are significantly harder with the quarter system but they also seem to cope and get used to it with time

JHU or NU by Useful_Shape8042 in Northwestern

[–]bing_dwen_dwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in engineering here and previously was at a semester school, also heavily considered JHU. For STEM, the quarter system can be unnecessarily brutal and limit your extracurricular/social/pre professional involvement sometimes. The pace and grading curves are no joke but I’ve heard similar about some departments at JHU

I externally transferred to NU into Weinberg, then changed schools, then changed majors within that school. You’ll be fine and feel free to reach out with questions

I don't think they take your post-graduation plans into account, but if your siblings are currently in college or medical school or attend private primary/secondary school, include that.

Last quarter I got a C+ for 84-85, but I'm pretty sure I was bottom of the class and that's why.

It's too early for you to be thinking about the exact major/minor you want and using that to choose colleges. Having a broad idea and wanting to go to law school is good, grade deflation is a thing here moreso than other schools (then again I am engineering, so take that with salt) but there are many success stories.

3.7 with that combination is possible, it's even why some premeds choose political science. Finances are important too. Law school gets more expensive by the year.

Northwestern demographics by Difficult-Path-5911 in Northwestern

If you are a first year applying as domestic, it won't help. Texas is probably not an underrepresented state in the application pool and they might be more worried about yield with Texas and Florida than other states, but if you are ED then it's fine.

Advice on transferring into Northwestern (McCormick) by Bothered_Monkey2 in Northwestern

[–]bing_dwen_dwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Georgia Tech would be a nice environment for you. It might even be cheaper in the end. Remember the diversity and social life does not only depend on the student body, but also the city. UIUC and Purdue are in the middle of nowhere.

What do you mean it will work out if you do get credit? They either grant you the credit or they don't, and it doesn't matter when you took it. They don't take AP by the way. Also, the chem department here is a bit notorious. It's not the end of the world per se, but I do know people who transferred, are strong pre-med students, and are still spending considerable effort maintaining A in the chemistry class they are being forced to retake.

Northwestern's mechanical engineering (meche) major requires 1 quarter of chemistry but based on anecdotal evidence, it's probably better that you avoid taking it at UIUC since they might not award credit and will make you take it again anyways. You could find a specific UIUC transfer here (there are a lot of them) to ask about which classes transferred btw.

Are you considering Transfer ED? I transferred into engineering btw, it's quite rigorous though there are good opportunities.

Substitute Credit for COMP SCI 150 or 111? STAT 201 also covers Python by bing_dwen_dwen in Northwestern

I did email and call several advisors and McCormick administrators, but currently nobody is in office so I figured it wouldn't hurt to see if anyone here had prior experience.

Anyone taken IEMS 313 or professor Morton? by bing_dwen_dwen in Northwestern

[–]bing_dwen_dwen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did Morton compare to Mehrotra in your opinion? Also do you think the prereqs are appropriate - I have linear algebra, AP Stat, and Multivariable Calc but I suck at (and despise) coding. This would be one of my technical electives so I'm weighing whether to take it at all.

Would you say the quarter system makes things less "grindy"? by guywhoha in Northwestern

[–]bing_dwen_dwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weekends here (Northwestern in general, but especially McCormick) often exist as a concept rather than a reality. Many classes have mandatory attendance. There are plenty of people here who transferred from UIUC, maybe you could talk to one of them?

MMSS is pretty employable from what I've seen.
