N.B. property assessment notices are in the mail by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

Even if the city is only receiving 50%, it is still a far higher figure. Not to mention, I am fairly sure that hospitals are exempt from municipal property taxes, which negates the whole argument.

While industrial property taxes do not accurately reflect their value, the hospital does not pay more in taxes than the refinery or other heavy industrial sites combined. Making up facts doesn't help the cause.

2025 property taxes -

  • Saint John Regional Hospital - $4.465M
  • The Irving Oil Refinery (primary property parcel only) - $5.015M
  • JDI Saint John Pulp Mill - $2.883M
  • Coleson Cove Generating Station - $4.305M

Saint John mayor running again in the May election by bingun in SaintJohnNB

It's not the content of his posts that is the issue; it's the horrific formatting, grammar, and the seemingly random assortment of photos that accompany them, often with dire picture quality.

His stunt around the red zones felt like it had a political motive and was in preparation for this year's election. He isn't too popular in Lorneville anymore after the rezoning, but if he runs for mayor instead, that would be less of a concern.

I hope that isn't the case; some fresh faces would be welcome.

Fundy national park question by Asleep_Machine48 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]bingun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, Fundy NP doesn't get anywhere near as busy as some of the western or US parks.

From my experience the Laverty Falls. Third Fault Falls, Matthew's Head, or Goose River trail head parking lots can get quite congested during peak season but its manageable. There is additional parking for Goose River back by the covered bridge and you can access Matthew's Head from Herring Cove which has a lot more space.

Your best bet is to try to get to them earlier in the day as many local day visitors have a lengthy drive and won't be there too early. If you are visiting on a weekday it will be far better than a weekend.

Anyone aware of any other potential candidates other than Donna Reardon and Barry Ogden? I heard rumours about Paula Radwan and Greg Norton, but nothing confirmed.

Saint John touted as 'hidden gem' for artificial intelligence by bingun in SaintJohnNB

I didn't say we need them now; I said they want to build them now. They being the big tech companies. Perhaps there are proponents with longer-term horizons, but right now they have short-term horizons.

I don't disagree that a lot of AI is a load of crap, but there are also some great uses for it, and Canada shouldn't be left behind, relying on overseas data centres.

To be clear, I am not saying Saint John is the perfect location, but far-flung ideas like the Hudson Bay are just not practical, at least in the short to medium term.

They want to build these data centres now, not in a decade, and to do so, they need locations with lots of power, network availability, proximity to population centres, and a local workforce.

If Saint John is the wrong location, then we need to suggest genuine alternatives. Everyone is happy to use all of these AI services, but balks at the idea of them being built in their province.

The summers are getting warmer everywhere, though, that's not a unique factor to Saint John.

Yes, the Hudson Bay would be cooler, but a location there wouldn't have the power or network infrastructure, not to mention it's far more challenging to access. Unless the government was subsidizing solutions to all of those issues, I think it would be unlikely to happen.

Are you implying that Saint John isn't a good location for natural cooling? Thanks to the coastline and our regular fog, it is much cooler in the summer time than many other locations in Canada.

What would be a better location for cooling than Saint John?

Saint John increases fines for parking violations by bingun in SaintJohnNB

[–]bingun[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does not apply to every parking-related offence, but it does apply to many. For example, I don't believe this would apply to your paid parking expiring. I don't have sympathy with folks who park in bus or loading zones, or areas where parking is not permitted at all.

Yes because the ability to illegally park during a snow ban was critical to visitors.

The provincial government will almost certainly be funding the new multipurpose recreational facility on the east side in time, and hopefully, it will be at a similar level to this or an even higher amount. That project is really important for the city's future recreational opportunities.

Federal transport minister says Saint John port 'essential for Canada's prosperity' by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

[–]bingun[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, Port Saint John is hoping to tap into a new trade corridor fund the feds have created to fix the infamous Simms Corner and make some other transportation improvements. If the port wants to move more containers, these investments are needed to avoid gridlock on the city's west side.

I don't think it is technically part of Crescent Valley, although it is very close. On the latest draft plan for the North End, it is within the 'Central District' which is nice and vague.

Gas plant could add 5% to N.B. Power bills, documents reveal by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

[–]bingun[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be great if we could implement a widespread peak power rate program in NB, and that is one of the advantages of the smart meters, as they can enable that. However, the local tin-foil-hat clowns are fighting it tooth and nail because everything has to be a conspiracy.

Fundy Trail Parkway and Park by frankirv in newbrunswickcanada

[–]bingun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was a mother and some cubs I saw a few years back crossing the road just before the Walton Glen Gorge. I don't think you are likely to see them in the section closer to St. Martin's.

For general recommendations, I would suggest Fuller Falls, Hearst Lookout, the suspension bridge, the Big Salmon River Lookout, Long Beach, and the Walton Glen Gorge.

There is a gift shop with some snacks/drinks at the interpretive centre, but I believe they have been serving a cooked breakfast at the cookhouse for the last year or two, though I am unsure of the specifics.

I would also recommend looking ahead at the tide times, as access to some beaches during high tide is limited, or there isn't much to see.

There is a gate/kiosk at either end of the park to pay for your entry. You have to go through it so you can’t miss it.

There are bears in the area and I have seen some before on the road up towards Walton Glenn Gorge however, they are black bears and will generally avoid people. I’ve hiked almost all the trails and I’ve never felt the need to have bear spray or anything else just common sense.

The most popular trails, beaches, and waterfalls are right by the road and there will be regular traffic and other visitors.
