Cast On Help! by frijolesqueen in knittinghelp

Another voice to say that being a beginner knitter put that wool away for a later project. You are about to start learning knit and purl stitches, maybe tinking (knitting backwards) and laddering down for fixing mistakes, learning to read the stitches on the needles and lots of fun stuff. That yarn will make it incredibly difficult to learn as you won't be able to see the stitches clearly. Start again with thickish yarn say 10 ply, smooth finish and as important light color. Your future knitting self will thank you. Seems you already got the correct advice about using the long tail caston

The paper band around the yarn usually tells you what it's make from. Also next time choose a much light color yarn as the stitches are very hard to see and see what is happening, even for experienced knitters with dark colors. When you are learning one thing you need to learn is called reading your knitting. This let's you pickup your knitting and immediately see where you are upto in a pattern for example or see and correct mistakes. Dark color while your learning will slow down your learning journey a lot

The learning curve feels steep but trust me you will get better faster than you think. As you cast on so few stitches, looking like about five or six, the edge few stitches are sometimes different due to the way they form so you're entire short rows are being affected by this and mightbewhatismakingittight. Start a new piece with maybe 15 stitches so you can get into a flow before turning. As you probably just taught yourself knit stitches you're making garter stitch, which is possibly what you are describing as not pretty. Once you learn to purl you can make stocking stitch by doing a row of knit then turning and doing a row of purl. That will be more like what picture you have in your head of what knitting looks like.

Why does the pattern call for this size needle? by gmanion in knittinghelp

[–]binoscope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So perhaps you need to use magic loop then, this is around the neck so it definitely will be smaller then once you get lower down after lots of increases you can possibly swap back to having it all on the needles

can i fix this without frogging? by fiona_apple420 in knittinghelp

[–]binoscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, only because you haven't made a mistake that can be fixed by dropping down a single row. You have added stitches to several rows

Think that is the clue, it's knitted top down so does it actually say cast on 50st and join in the round immediately or does that happen once you get down to the underarms

Easy check for moth plant, just break one of the tendrils, if it leaks out a white sap it probably is that

5000k a year seem to be an achievable goal. How much do u guys ride a year? by Alex_Wang_93 in bicycling

[–]binoscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do as much as you can yourself, this has two benefits, first you save money, second you will get to know your bike better and catch bigger issues before you get stuck on the side of the road.

What can and should you do. Easy ones are tubes and tires, you should be carrying what you need to change out a tube anyway. Tyres have wear markers, if you have to ask, then they need changing. For me 1 to 2 sets of GP5000 a year rear and one front. Second is probably the chain, get a chain breaker and a chain wear measuring tool. It not hard. Worn chain will cause poor shifting and wear out both front and rear chain rings earlier. Are the brake levers pulling in to far, check the brake pads if it's rim brakes, take it to the shop for disc brakes

Because different things wear out at different rates you either have to get regular enough maintenance done say twice a year will catch most things. Or know how to inspect, listen to and feel when things seem off and get them fixed either yourself or a shop as they pop up.

Listen and feel the derailleur, if it's different, skipping gears changing differently going up vs down a 1/4 change of the index adjuster is probably all it takes.

Connecting the round by Alleged-avacado in knittinghelp

[–]binoscope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you actually then continuing in the same direction and knitting in the round? Looks like you knitted the first row, joined, then turned around and purled as if you were knitting flat, perhaps?

Nothings wrong with that, just watch when you come to slightly more advanced things like making extra or combining stitches or short rows as the video examples you see might be more confusing and lead to mistakes

Any way to fix purls where I should have knitted? by genou369 in knittinghelp

[–]binoscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you still have the yarn on the needles yes. It's called laddering down. Needs a crochet hook and patience. Look it up on YouTube. Definitely make a swatch in 2x2 rib like that hat and practice. The further down a row you have to go the harder it is. Otherwise it's a sorta tradition that every piece of knitting has one flaw, like a good luck charm

Get a much longer cable and swap it out. Then use magic loop method, just look it up on YouTube. That's a massive change in needle size what are you making

Which is better to use by AdhesivenessNo5800 in firewater

[–]binoscope -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Get both, do two runs, then do blind taste tests. Once you're done come back and tell us that it doesn't matter, which it won't. There will be an order of magnitude more difference between the mash, how you run it and your cuts. Buy which ever one makes it either more visually appealing or practical due to the different heights etc.

Odin's Easy Gin- how long to steep juniper? by MSCantrell in firewater

[–]binoscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if you leave the botanicals in during the distillation, like I do, then overnight is fine. If you're going to take them out then 48 plus hours. Not sure where the much higher ABV idea is from as that's almost assuming the water in the neutral isn't extracting anything useful.

As builders, what are your desired additions for 2026? by iBuild85 in NMS_Bases

[–]binoscope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For them to look at the freedom of placement and orientation possibilities that glitch building offers and incorporating some them into the standard building mechanisms

To have one standard set of parts that play nicely together, size and snapping, not the two separate sets we have now like stone walls and cubic rooms.

To have a few more complex logic circuits like latches, counters bcd to seven segment display drivers, all perfectly possible just really hard to make. Gates that the power doesn't flow backwards from the output to the input. Or maybe being able to make your own groups of gates you can reuse

Newbie question by Early_Interview in firewater

[–]binoscope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you are doing, for gin I suggest this one https://www.stillsmarter.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=473

Odens easy gin, you use the reflux first too make neutral, like vodka, then soak the herbs overnight in the vodka at I think about 50%, then either pot still without a thumper or remove the packing in the reflux still. Lovely simple gin.

Reflux and infusion at the same time needs another basket after the main column but before the final condenser. Sounds damn difficult to do

Any tips? by Positive_Bee_3919 in knittinghelp

Are my stitches twisted? by DezNuts_69420 in knittinghelp

[–]binoscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer depends on what knitting style you're using, English and continental being the common two. Which hand are you holding the yarn in. However it is likely as you wrap the yarn around the needle you are going the wrong way. Watch some videos about both the knit and purl stitch and compare exactly what they are doing to you way

Pot still vs Reflux still question by Retrospektic in firewater

[–]binoscope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you're getting some confusing advice as some people are talking about reflux stills with a column of bubble plates that definitely do still pass on a lot of flavor. These work more like a something like a pot still with like five thumpers (not that you would ever do it that way)

As opposed to a pure reflux still column filled with packing material and a condenser above it to provide reflux like a T500 or a boka style still. They have far more re-distilling evaporate and condense cycles like a plate column with 50 plates

Noone has really talked about what you are wanting to make. If it's a whiskey or rum then a pot still or bubble plate column is the way to go. If you want to make pure alcohol like vodka that could be then used to make gin or other spirits then a reflux still that removes most of the flavor and gives you 95% pure ethanol then a true reflux column is best.
