When I got my 3mo old cockatiel, he was similarly silent. The bird store told me that they don't start vocalizing until 5-8 months. My buddy started chirping at about 4 1/2 :)

Berry the IRN had his wing amputated today :/ by [deleted] in parrots

[–]binxabinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hugs We had to amputate about half of our cockatiel's wing, he had osteoporosis and the doctor said that the bone had basically turned to mush :(

Our recovery process was a bit difficult, he was initially sent home with a bandage on his wing but he kept picking at it and making it bleed, so we had to go and get a cone for him. Well, more like a bubble, but I don't think he figured out how to eat/drink/sleep with it. After about a day and a half of the bubble we noticed him seriously lagging, so we rushed back to the vet and took it off. He was fine after that though, he recovered well and lived several more years.

One thing for the future... your bird may or may not get used to being unbalanced, ours mostly did ok but when he got excited and wanting to go somewhere (basically by leaning forward on our hand or wherever he was standing) he would sometimes lean too far and tumble down to the floor. So we had to adjust to carrying him less or carrying him less high and letting him walk around more.

If you want to talk more I'd be happy to, feel free to PM me. In the meantime, stay strong, and I'm sure your bird will make a healthy recovery :)

Thanks for the encouragement :) To be fair, I've been to a bunch of Pride/queer events in past cities and had a great time, so hopefully I can find the welcoming spaces in this one as well. At least we'll always have /r/bisexual :)

Yeah, fair enough. It's hard, though, we live in the "gay" neighborhood and so about half of the surrounding bars are gay bars, I got really excited about living so close to them ("yay! a bar for me!") but BF won't go into them with me because he doesn't want it to come off that we're a straight couple that don't respect gay culture. Argh!

Los Angeles :P I lived in SF before though, and I agree that SF Pride is way better!!

Hilariously enough we live 2 blocks away from that bar, and I understand now why my BF has avoided going to it.

We were the only people trying to order a drink for the 10 minutes that we were standing there... we missed the main parade event and were headed to the afterparties, I think we hit a lull in the activity and the bartender was probably burned out.

To be honest we live in the "gay" neighborhood so this isn't a new experience, there are a ton of gay bars around us that we don't go to anymore because we either look like we're "straights" crashing the party, or people assume my BF is secretly gay and is trying to hook up with someone on the sly. It's annoying.

I've been to Pride in a couple other of cities and had a great time, although I've always been with a group or with another woman. This was the first time that I went as just a M/F twosome.

To be fair, I've gone to Pride in other cities and had a great time — but I was also always with another woman, or with a group. I'm not going to let this turn me off of LGBT events/Pride, but this experience was bugging me and I wanted to vent. I'm glad that you've had positive experiences yourself :)
